The Boy Behind the Counter / Chapter 17 / 19

Chapter 8: The Name Buried With Him

The tunnel narrowed as it stretched beneath the highway.

Ray Collins moved first, flashlight bouncing against the concrete walls. Daniel followed close behind, one hand pressed against his side. Laura and Mason came next.

Above them, the explosions continued.

Each one sent a dull vibration through the ceiling.

Dust drifted down.

Noah was still somewhere inside the truck stop.

Ray kept thinking about him.

Every few steps, he looked back.

“How long until this tunnel ends?””

Daniel answered without hesitation.

“Two hundred yards.””

“You built it?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“To disappear.””

Ray looked forward.

“You've had fifteen years to explain yourself.””

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“I know.””

“Then start.””

Daniel kept walking.

“Not here.””

Ray stopped.

Daniel stopped too.

“This ends badly if you keep making me wait.””

Daniel turned.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then listen to everything before you decide what it means.””

Ray stared at him.

Daniel took a breath.

“Fifteen years ago, Tommy wasn't the first person to die.””

Ray's face tightened.

“I know there were others.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I mean someone from before Tommy.””

Ray waited.

“Your father.””

The flashlight almost slipped from Ray's hand.

For a moment, the tunnel seemed to disappear.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“You were seventeen when he died.””

Ray said nothing.

“He died in what they called a refinery accident.””

Ray's jaw tightened.

“I remember.””

“You remember what they told you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don't remember what really happened.””

Ray stared at him.

“What does my father have to do with any of this?””

“Everything.””

A low rumble passed through the tunnel.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“We have to keep moving.””

Ray didn't move.

“Talk.””

Daniel sighed.

“Your father discovered the same network we found years later. Fake contracts. Hidden accounts.

Stolen government money. But there was one thing he discovered that made them afraid.””

“What?””

“He found the ledger.””

“The ledger?””

“A master record linking every shell company to the people behind them.””

Ray's eyes narrowed.

“And you had it?””

“Not then.””

“Who did?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“Your father.””

Ray stepped backward.

“No.””

“He made a copy before they came for him.””

Ray's breathing changed.

“You're telling me my father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I found out years later.””

“From who?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Ray grabbed the front of his jacket.

“From who?””

Daniel looked down at Ray's hand.

“From your mother.””

Ray released him.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew your father wasn't killed in an accident.””

Ray's face hardened.

“She lied to me too.””

“She was trying to keep you alive.””

“So everybody gets a pass because they were protecting me?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm saying they were afraid.””

Ray laughed bitterly.

“I was seventeen.””

“I know.””

“And everyone around me knew something except me.””

“I know.””

Ray walked away.

For several seconds, the only sound was the distant roar of thunder.

Then Mason spoke.

“Ray.””

Ray looked at him.

“You've got a kid upstairs who needs you.””

The words broke through.

Ray turned back toward the tunnel.

“Keep moving.””

They continued.

At the end of the passage was a steel ladder.

Daniel climbed first.

He pushed open a hatch.

Cold air rushed down.

They emerged inside an abandoned maintenance shed behind the truck stop.

The rain had not stopped.

Through the broken wall, Ray could see the parking lot.

Two SUVs were still there.

Men were moving through the building.

Victor had taken control.

Ray looked at Daniel.

“How do we get back?””

Daniel pointed toward an access road.

“There.””

Mason looked toward the truck stop.

“That's a lot of men.””

Ray nodded.

“We're not fighting all of them.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Good.””

Ray stared.

“That sounded like approval.””

“It wasn't.””

For the first time, Daniel smiled.

“Still stubborn.””

Ray almost smiled back.

Then he heard something.

A child's voice.

Far away.

“Ray!””

His smile disappeared.

Noah.

Ray stepped toward the truck stop.

“That's him.””

They moved.

But before they reached the corner, headlights appeared behind the shed.

A vehicle stopped.

The driver's door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Ray recognized her immediately.

She was older than the last time he'd seen her.

But there was no mistaking her.

“Mom?””

Ray couldn't speak.

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My God.””

Daniel whispered:

“Evelyn.””

Ray stared.

His mother looked at Daniel.

Then at Ray.

Then at the truck stop.

“You shouldn't have come back.””

Daniel answered:

“They found Noah.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

“What?””

“Victor took control of the truck stop.””

“And Noah?””

“Inside.””

She looked devastated.

Ray stepped toward her.

“You knew?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“You knew Dad didn't die in an accident.””

Silence.

That was all the answer he needed.

Ray's voice became hard.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“To keep you away.””

“From what?””

Evelyn stared at the burning lights of the truck stop.

“The truth.””

Ray clenched his jaw.

“Everybody says that.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father found the ledger.””

Ray nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don't.””

She opened the trunk of her vehicle.

Inside was an old wooden box.

She lifted it out.

It was scratched.

Weathered.

Locked.

Evelyn handed Ray a key.

“This belonged to your father.””

Ray stared at it.

“What is it?””

“The reason he died.””

Daniel moved closer.

“Does it still have the original?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel's face changed.

Ray noticed.

“What original?””

Evelyn opened the box.

Inside was a black ledger.

Real paper.

Old handwriting.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Companies.

And tucked inside the front cover was a photograph.

Ray picked it up.

His father stood beside a younger Victor Hale.

And between them stood Marcus Vale.

Ray stared.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“They were all connected.””

Ray looked at Daniel.

“You knew Marcus was involved.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew!””

“I didn't know how deep it went.””

Ray flipped through the ledger.

One page after another.

Then he found a familiar name.

Tommy Alvarez.

Beside his name was a date.

And an amount.

Ray's blood turned cold.

“Tommy was paid.””

Daniel nodded.

“Not to betray us.””

Ray looked confused.

“Then what?””

“To protect us.””

Ray looked up.

“What?””

“Tommy knew they were coming.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“He tried to warn us.””

Ray stared at the page.

“Then why did he die?””

“Because someone gave away our location.””

Ray's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward Marcus's name.

“That's the question.””

Ray's mother suddenly whispered:

“Not Marcus.””

Ray turned.

“What?””

Evelyn's eyes were full of fear.

“Marcus took the blame.””

“Why?””

“Because the person who betrayed you was someone nobody would suspect.””

Ray froze.

The answer was forming before she spoke.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Someone in your own family.””

Ray felt the cold move through him.

“My mother?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

“My father?””

“He was already dead.””

“Then who?””

Evelyn pointed toward the truck stop.

Ray followed her finger.

Someone was standing in the rain.

Watching them.

Curtis.

No.

Not Curtis.

Frank.

He had escaped.

Frank raised a phone.

Then smiled.

Evelyn whispered:

“Oh God.””

“What?””

“He found the box.””

Ray looked down.

The ledger.

Frank had somehow known.

That meant someone had told him.

Someone who knew where it was hidden.

Someone close enough to Ray's family to know exactly where his father had kept it.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Who knew?””

She hesitated.

“Only three people.””

“Who?””

“Myself.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“And Marcus.””

Ray looked toward Frank.

“Then somebody told Victor.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Ray turned.

Daniel looked terrified.

“Victor already knew.””

“What?””

“He was the one who put your father on the list.””

Ray stared at him.

“Then why didn't he take the ledger?””

“Because he couldn't find it.””

A sudden noise came from the truck stop.

Glass shattered.

Noah screamed.

Ray dropped the box.

He ran.

Daniel followed.

Mason grabbed the ledger.

Evelyn climbed into her vehicle.

The three of them raced toward the building.

Inside, the emergency lights were still glowing red.

The employees were gone.

The bikers were scattered.

Emily was on the floor beside the counter.

Blood ran from her forehead.

Noah was gone.

Ray knelt beside her.

“Emily!””

She opened her eyes.

“Ray…”

“Where's Noah?””

Her breathing was fast.

“They took him.””

“Who?””

She pointed weakly toward the back.

“Victor.””

Ray looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face went rigid.

Then they heard a vehicle engine.

Ray ran outside.

A black SUV was tearing across the wet parking lot.

Noah was visible through the rear window.

He was pounding against the glass.

“Mom!””

Ray sprinted forward.

But the SUV accelerated.

Mason appeared beside him.

“Too fast!””

Daniel looked at the highway.

“They're heading east.””

Ray turned toward the motorcycles.

Keys were already in his hand.

“Get the bikes.””

Mason ran.

Daniel grabbed Ray's arm.

“Wait.””

Ray spun.

“They have the kid.””

“I know.””

“You want me to wait?””

“No.””

Daniel pointed at the SUV.

“Look.””

Ray squinted.

A second vehicle was following.

An ordinary pickup.

No markings.

Ray recognized the driver.

Marcus Vale.

He wasn't chasing Victor.

He was following.

Watching.

Ray stared.

“What is Marcus doing?””

Daniel whispered:

“Something he should have done fifteen years ago.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at the ledger.

Then toward the highway.

“He's trying to keep Noah alive.””

The motorcycles roared to life.

Ray climbed onto his bike.

Mason revved beside him.

Daniel pulled out another motorcycle from the shed.

Evelyn shouted from the vehicle:

“Ray!””

He looked back.

She held the wooden box.

And something else.

A second photograph.

She threw it.

Ray caught it.

He looked down.

His father.

Tommy.

Daniel.

Marcus.

And one more person.

A man standing behind them.

Ray's breath stopped.

He knew that face.

It was a face he had seen tonight.

Inside Victor's truck stop.

On the walls.

In old photographs.

The man who owned the building before Victor.

The man everyone believed had been dead for decades.

Ray looked toward Daniel.

“Who is that?””

Daniel answered:

“The man who started everything.””

Ray looked at the photograph again.

The truth was finally visible.

Victor wasn't the beginning.

He wasn't even the top.

He was only the next name in the chain.

And at the bottom of the photograph, written in his father's handwriting, were four words:

*Don't trust the family.*

Ray folded the photograph.

Then he twisted the throttle.

Three motorcycles tore into the rain.

Ahead of them, the black SUV carrying Noah disappeared into the darkness.

Behind it, Marcus followed.

And somewhere between Oklahoma and the horizon, the last secret of the Cross family was waiting to be exposed.
