Chapter 6: The Man Ray Buried
The photograph shook slightly in Ray Collins’ hand.
Not because he was afraid of Victor Hale.
Not because of the armed men moving through the darkness of the truck stop.
Not because the doors were locked and the night had turned into a trap.
The reason was much simpler.
The man in the photograph was impossible.
Ray had buried him.
Fifteen years ago.
In the ground.
With his own hands.
Mason noticed the change in his face.
“Ray?””
Ray didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the photograph.
The man standing beside Victor Hale looked younger.
Older.
Different.
But the scar above his left eyebrow was the same.
The crooked smile was the same.
The eyes were the same.
Eyes Ray had spent fifteen years trying to forget.
Mason leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
Ray slowly lowered the photograph.
“Someone who should not be alive.””
Victor watched him carefully.
And that confirmed everything.
Ray looked up.
“You knew I would recognize him.””
Victor smiled.
“I was wondering when you would.””
The room became colder.
Mason looked between them.
“Ray, who is it?””
Ray finally answered.
“Daniel Cross.””
The name meant nothing to the younger bikers.
But the older ones froze.
One of them, Hank, stepped forward.
“Wait.””
He stared at the picture.
“No.””
Ray looked at him.
“You remember.””
Hank’s face had lost all color.
“Everyone remembers.””
Noah looked confused.
“Who is Daniel?””
Ray didn’t respond immediately.
Because how do you explain a ghost to a child?
How do you explain a man who was once your brother on the road?
A man who saved your life.
A man who betrayed you.
A man who died because of it.
Finally, Ray said:
“He was one of us.””
Victor smiled.
“Not anymore.””
Ray looked at him.
“Where is he?””
Victor didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Ray turned back to the photograph.
“He’s alive.””
Victor stepped closer.
“And he wants what’s inside that notebook.””
Ray held it tighter.
“You could have taken it yourself.””
“I could have.””
“Then why not?””
Victor smiled.
“Because Daniel wanted you involved.””
A strange silence followed.
Ray’s eyes narrowed.
“He wanted me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor looked toward Noah.
“Because he knew you would do what you always do.””
Ray’s expression hardened.
“And what’s that?””
“Protect people who don't deserve your loyalty.””
The words hit harder than Ray expected.
Because they weren't entirely wrong.
Ray had spent his entire life believing people could be saved.
Even broken people.
Even people who had made terrible choices.
But Daniel Cross was different.
Daniel had been the exception.
The one person Ray had stopped believing in.
The one person he had left behind.
Fifteen years ago.
The memory came back like a wound reopening.
A highway somewhere in Arizona.
A motorcycle accident.
A betrayal.
Ray remembered the night clearly.
The three of them had been riding together.
Ray.
Daniel.
And their friend Tommy.
They weren't criminals.
They weren't heroes.
Just men who loved the road.
But they had discovered something they were never supposed to find.
A deal.
A shipment.
A group of powerful people moving money through fake businesses.
Daniel wanted to expose it.
Ray wanted to walk away.
Tommy wanted to protect them.
Then everything went wrong.
Their location was discovered.
Their camp was attacked.
Tommy died.
Daniel disappeared.
Two days later, they found his motorcycle burned beside a cliff.
A body was recovered.
The police identified it as Daniel.
Ray had attended the funeral.
He had watched the coffin disappear into the ground.
He had stood there when everyone said goodbye.
But now...
Daniel Cross was alive.
A loud crash pulled Ray back to reality.
One of Victor’s men had forced open the kitchen entrance.
The employees screamed.
Noah grabbed Emily.
Ray immediately moved.
“Everyone behind me.””
The bikers formed a line.
Victor sighed.
“You still think this is a fight you can win?””
Ray looked at him.
“No.””
Victor seemed surprised.
“No?””
Ray shook his head.
“I think this is a fight you never expected.””
Victor stared.
“You don't know what you're dealing with.””
Ray smiled slightly.
“Funny.””
He looked at the locked doors.
“At least tonight, everybody keeps saying that.””
The first man rushed forward.
Mason intercepted him.
The two collided.
The truck stop erupted into chaos.
Not a wild brawl.
Not random violence.
A controlled storm.
The bikers protected the employees.
Protected Noah.
Protected Emily.
They weren’t trying to win a war.
They were trying to survive long enough to expose one.
Ray grabbed the emergency axe from the wall.
Not to attack.
To break the front door lock.
He swung.
Once.
Twice.
The metal frame cracked.
Victor watched.
Still calm.
Too calm.
Ray noticed.
“Why aren't you worried?””
Victor looked at him.
“Because you're focused on the wrong enemy.””
Ray stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask your friend.””
Ray looked around.
“Which friend?””
Victor pointed.
Toward Curtis.
Everyone turned.
Curtis was standing near the counter.
Holding something.
A small device.
Ray’s expression changed.
“Curtis.””
Curtis looked terrified.
“I didn't know.””
Victor smiled.
“Of course you didn't.””
Mason stepped toward him.
“What is that?””
Curtis looked down.
“A tracker.””
The room went silent.
Ray stared.
“On what?””
Curtis looked at Noah.
Noah froze.
Ray immediately stepped between them.
“Where?””
Curtis pointed weakly.
“The backpack.””
Everyone looked at it.
Ray opened it.
The notebook.
The envelope.
The photograph.
Nothing else.
Then Noah touched the side pocket.
His face changed.
“What?””
He reached inside.
Pulled out a small black device.
Emily covered her mouth.
“He planted it.””
Curtis nodded.
Victor smiled.
“Not me.””
Everyone looked at him.
Victor continued.
“Daniel.””
Ray’s blood ran cold.
“No.””
Victor walked closer.
“He wanted you to find the evidence.””
Ray looked at the tracker.
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would bring it somewhere safe.””
Ray stared.
“Here?””
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.””
A horrible realization formed.
Ray looked at the truck stop.
At the people inside.
At the bikers.
At Noah.
“This wasn't about the notebook.””
Victor nodded.
“Now you understand.””
Ray whispered:
“It was about finding everyone connected to it.””
Victor looked satisfied.
“Daniel needed one location.””
Ray looked at him.
“You used us as bait.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
A pause.
“He did.””
The lights suddenly went out again.
Not flickering.
Not failing.
Cut.
Complete darkness.
A second later, a voice came through the truck stop speakers.
Everyone froze.
Because Ray knew that voice.
Even after fifteen years.
Even after believing it was gone.
Even after burying it.
“Hello, Ray.””
The voice was calm.
Older.
But unmistakable.
Daniel Cross.
Noah looked around.
“Who is that?””
Ray couldn't answer.
The speakers crackled.
Daniel continued.
“I knew you would find the photograph.””
Ray stepped forward.
“Daniel!””
The voice laughed softly.
“You sound surprised.””
“You're alive.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And you're angry.””
Ray clenched his fists.
“You let me bury you.””
“I needed to disappear.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I needed everyone to think that.””
Ray looked around.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“Do you remember what you told me before everything happened?””
Ray said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“You said the truth always finds a way out.””
Ray’s face hardened.
“You betrayed us.””
Silence.
Then:
“I saved you.””
Ray shook his head.
“You killed Tommy.””
The truck stop went completely quiet.
Even Victor looked away.
Daniel’s voice changed.
For the first time, emotion appeared.
“You don't know what happened.””
“I was there.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“You saw what they wanted you to see.””
Ray froze.
“What does that mean?””
The speakers crackled.
“I didn't betray you, Ray.””
A pause.
“They betrayed me.””
Ray looked at Victor.
Victor said nothing.
That was enough.
Ray understood.
There was another layer.
Another secret.
Another lie.
Daniel continued.
“The night Tommy died…”
His voice lowered.
“You weren't the target.””
Ray swallowed.
“Then who was?””
A long silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“Me.””
The emergency lights returned.
Everyone looked around.
But Daniel was nowhere.
Only his voice remained.
“Ray.””
Ray stared at the speakers.
“What?””
“I need you to listen carefully.””
A pause.
“Because the people you think are enemies…”
Another pause.
“They're not the ones you should fear.””
The speakers went silent.
Then every phone inside the truck stop rang at the same time.
Employees screamed.
The bikers looked around.
Ray slowly pulled out his own phone.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice spoke immediately.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
A woman.
Terrified.
“Ray Collins?””
“Yes.””
“Your friend Daniel told me to call you.””
Ray’s eyes narrowed.
“Who are you?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“My name is Laura Cross.””
Ray froze.
Daniel’s last name.
“Are you related to him?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m his daughter.””
Ray looked at Mason.
Nobody moved.
The woman continued.
“And I know who really killed Tommy.””
Ray felt the entire world shift.
“Where are you?””
The woman whispered:
“Not far.””
Then she said something that made Ray’s blood turn cold.
“I'm in the room underneath the truck stop.””
Everyone looked down.
The hidden room.
The cash room.
The place they had just discovered.
Ray slowly turned.
But before he could speak, Laura said:
“Ray…”
Her voice broke.
“Please hurry.””
A pause.
“He found me.””
The call ended.

At that exact moment…
A single gunshot echoed from beneath the floor.
