Chapter 9: The Last Place Daniel Hid His Daughter
The city looked different at night.
Victoria had always loved the view from high buildings.
The lights.
The movement.
The illusion that everything below was organized.
But tonight, sitting in the passenger seat beside Marcus Vale, she saw something else.
A battlefield.
Every building represented someone’s ambition.
Every shadow represented something hidden.
And somewhere among those shadows was Isabella.
A child who had become the center of a war she never chose.
Marcus drove without speaking.
That alone told Victoria how serious the situation was.
The man who always had an answer.
The man who always controlled conversations.
The man who could manipulate a room with a single sentence.
Now he was silent.
Victoria watched him carefully.
“You’re afraid.””
Marcus kept his eyes on the road.
“No.””
“Yes.””
A bitter smile appeared on his face.
“You sound like Daniel.””
Victoria looked away.
“Stop saying that.””
“Why?””
“Because every time you say his name, you act like you were the only person who knew him.””
Marcus’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.
For a moment, the anger returned.
Then it disappeared.
“You don’t know what Daniel and I went through.””
“No.””
Victoria looked at him.
“But I know what he became.””
Marcus said nothing.
“You loved the version of Daniel who needed you.””
The words hit harder than she expected.
Marcus looked at her.
“And you think you knew the version who loved you?””
Victoria held his gaze.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell you about Isabella?””
The question hurt because it was true.
Victoria looked out the window.
She had asked herself that question more times than she wanted to admit.
Why had Daniel trusted others with pieces of the truth?
Why had he protected everyone except the woman who shared his life?
But she also knew the answer.
Daniel had not hidden Isabella because he doubted Victoria.
He had hidden Isabella because he believed the danger would follow anyone who knew.
And now it had.
“Because he thought he could carry everything alone.””
Marcus gave a quiet laugh.
“That was always his problem.””
Victoria looked at him.
“You sound like you miss him.””
The smile vanished.
“I do.””
The honesty surprised her.
Marcus continued driving.
“I hated him.””
Victoria said nothing.
“But I respected him.””
The city lights reflected across the windshield.
“He was the only person who ever made me believe I could be more than what I was.””
Victoria listened.
Then Marcus said something unexpected.
“He was also the only person who ever made me feel replaceable.””
There it was.
The wound beneath everything.
Not greed.
Not ambition.
A feeling of being left behind.
Victoria understood something.
People rarely destroyed what they hated.
They destroyed what they once loved and felt they lost.
“Where are we going?””
Marcus did not answer immediately.
Finally, he said:
“An old Bellacorte property.””
Victoria frowned.
“Why would Isabella be there?””
“Because Daniel trusted places more than people.””
That sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
They drove outside the city.
The mansion disappeared behind them.
The roads became quieter.
Eventually, they reached a small house surrounded by trees.
It was nothing like the Bellacorte estate.
No marble.
No security gates.
No signs of wealth.
Just a simple house.
Victoria stared.
“Daniel owned this?””
Marcus nodded.
“Before the empire.””
She looked at him.
“You knew about this place?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Marcus looked at the house.
“Because Daniel asked me not to.””
Victoria almost laughed.
Another secret.
Another promise.
But this one felt different.
They entered carefully.
The house was dark.
Marcus turned on the lights.
Nothing moved.
Victoria immediately noticed something.
The house was not abandoned.
There were books on the table.
A blanket on the couch.
A child’s drawing on the refrigerator.
Isabella had been here.
Recently.
Victoria walked closer.
The drawing showed a family.
A man.
A woman.
A little girl.
And another person.
A woman with long hair.
Victoria touched the paper.
“Elizabeth.””
Marcus looked away.
“Yes.””
Victoria turned.
“She was here.””
“Yes.””
“Where is she now?””
Marcus did not answer.
That was enough.
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You don’t know.””
“No.””
For once, Marcus admitted uncertainty.
A sound came from upstairs.
Victoria immediately looked up.
Marcus moved first.
They climbed the stairs.
Slowly.
Carefully.
At the end of the hallway was a bedroom.
The door was open.
Inside, a small lamp was still on.
And sitting on the bed was Isabella.
Victoria stopped breathing.
The little girl looked exactly like the photograph.
Dark hair.
Bright eyes.
A small face filled with confusion.
She looked at Victoria.
Then whispered:
“You came.””
Victoria’s heart broke.
She walked forward slowly.
“Isabella?””
The girl nodded.
“My daddy said you would be kind.””
Victoria knelt.
“You knew my husband?””
The child looked down.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He visited me.””
Victoria froze.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Isabella thought.
“Before he went away.””
Victoria felt tears forming.
“Did he tell you he loved you?””
The little girl nodded.
“Every time.””
A painful silence filled the room.
Because Daniel had been a father.
And Victoria had never known.
Isabella looked at her.
“Are you my family?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of confusion.
Victoria looked at this child.
A child Daniel had died trying to protect.
A child everyone had treated as a threat.
She reached out.
“Yes.””
The word came without hesitation.
“You are family.””
Isabella smiled slightly.
Then a sound came from downstairs.
A crash.
Marcus immediately stood.
“They found us.””
Victoria looked at him.
“Who?””
Marcus did not answer.
Because he already knew.
Footsteps filled the house.
More than one person.
Victoria moved Isabella behind her.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Older.
Calm.
Well dressed.
Someone Victoria recognized from the photographs.
The old Bellacorte council.
The person who had been missing from every official story.
The person Daniel had been afraid of.
“Adrian Bellacorte.””
Marcus’s face changed.
Victoria looked at him.
“You know him.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Everyone thought he left the family.””
Adrian smiled.
“Everyone always believes what they are told.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Where is Elizabeth?””
Adrian ignored her.
His eyes moved to Isabella.
“There you are.””
The way he said it made Victoria’s stomach turn.
Not like family.
Like ownership.
Isabella grabbed Victoria’s hand.
Adrian noticed.
Interesting.””
Victoria looked at him.
“She is not yours.””
Adrian smiled.
“That is where you are wrong.””
He stepped closer.
“The Bellacorte name belongs to blood.””
Victoria stood her ground.
“No.””
Adrian looked surprised.
“No?””
“The Bellacorte name belongs to people who protect it.””
Adrian laughed.
“Daniel really changed you.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She looked at Isabella.
“But they forget something.””
“What?””
“Daniel changed because he learned what mattered.””
Adrian’s smile faded.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Let her go.””
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian almost looked amused.
“You?””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“Yes.””
“You betrayed Daniel.””
Marcus said nothing.
“You destroyed everything he built.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at Isabella.
“I made mistakes.””
Adrian laughed.
“That is what weak people say when they realize they lost.””
Victoria noticed something.
Marcus was not looking at Adrian with fear anymore.
He was looking at him with anger.
Because Adrian had been the person behind everything.
“Daniel discovered you,” Marcus said.
Adrian smiled.
“Eventually.””
“You forced him.””
“Yes.””
Victoria felt cold.
“You admit it?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Your husband was intelligent. But intelligence creates arrogance.””
“What did you do?””
Adrian walked around the room.
“I gave him a choice.””
“What choice?””
“Step away.””
Victoria stared.
“And he refused.””
“Of course.””
Adrian smiled.
“That was Daniel’s greatest weakness.””
Victoria’s voice became quiet.
“His loyalty.””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at Isabella.
“His love.””
Victoria felt anger.
“Do not speak about him.””
Adrian turned.
“You think love saved Daniel?””
“No.””
Victoria held Isabella’s hand.
“I think love is why he fought.””
For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.
Only briefly.
Then the lights went out.
Darkness.
A loud sound.
Someone moving.
Victoria grabbed Isabella.
Marcus reacted instantly.
A struggle.
Voices.
Then emergency lights turned on.
Adrian was gone.
But he had left something behind.
A folder.
On the floor.
Victoria picked it up.
Inside was one document.
Daniel’s final signature.
A transfer agreement.
Victoria read it.
Then her face changed.
Because the document revealed something impossible.
Daniel had not planned to leave the empire to Victoria.
He had not planned to leave it to Isabella.
He had created something else.
A hidden foundation.
A structure that removed control from everyone.
A structure that made sure no single Bellacorte could ever own everything again.
Marcus looked over her shoulder.
“He knew.””
Victoria looked at him.
“He knew this would happen.””
Marcus nodded.
“He planned for all of us.””
Victoria stared at the signature.
Daniel had known.
He had known his family would fight.
He had known people would betray each other.
He had known power would destroy them.
And he had created one final move.
A move that could save everything.
Or destroy it completely.
A phone rang.
Elizabeth.
Victoria answered.
The voice on the other end was shaking.
“Victoria.””
“Elizabeth.””
“You found Isabella?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
Then Elizabeth whispered:
“Good.””
Victoria frowned.
“What’s wrong?””
Elizabeth’s voice broke.
“Because now they know where she is.””
Victoria looked around the dark house.
“Who?””
Silence.
Then:
“The person who killed Daniel.””
The call ended.
Victoria slowly lowered the phone.
Because for the first time…
she understood.
Marcus had not been the final enemy.
Adrian had not been the final enemy.
They were only pieces.
And the person who had been moving them all along was still hidden.
Waiting.
Watching.
May you like
And now that Isabella had been found…
they had nothing left to lose.
