Chapter 9: The Secret My Wife Left Behind

I couldn’t move.

The document sat on my desk.

Waiting.

Like a door I didn’t want to open.

A door leading back to a painful part of my life.

Richard noticed my expression.

“Mr. Vance?””

I looked at him.

“Where did you get this?””

“It came from an old legal archive.””

“Who accessed it?””

“We’re still investigating.””

I picked up the document.

The name at the top made my chest tighten.

Emily Vance.

My wife.

My best friend.

The person who believed in me before anyone else did.

“What does Marcus have to do with this?””

Richard sat down.

“We don’t know yet.””

I turned the pages.

The documents were from fifteen years ago.

Before The Grand Regent became a global company.

Before the money.

Before the fame.

Before everything changed.

Emily and I were struggling back then.

We had one small hotel.

A mountain of debt.

And a dream.

Everyone told us to quit.

Everyone except her.

She believed.

She always believed.

The file contained a legal agreement.

A partnership offer.

I frowned.

“Why don’t I remember this?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Because you rejected it.””

I froze.

“I did?””

“Yes.””

I kept reading.

Then I remembered.

A wealthy investor had approached us.

He wanted to buy half the company.

I refused.

Because Emily and I wanted to build something ourselves.

But why was this connected to her?

I turned another page.

And there it was.

The name.

Marcus Whitmore.

My hands went still.

“He was the investor.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at the document.

Fifteen years ago, Marcus tried to buy into my company.

I rejected him.

And now he was back.

But why now?

Why after all these years?

Then I found the answer.

A note attached to the file.

Written in Emily’s handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

My heart broke.

Ethan, if you are reading this, something happened.

I stopped breathing.

Richard looked away respectfully.

I continued.

I never told you everything because I didn’t want you carrying another burden.

My hands trembled.

Emily knew.

She knew something.

Marcus Whitmore is not the kind of man who accepts losing.

I swallowed.

Be careful.

The note ended there.

Only two words.

Protect Lily.

I closed my eyes.

The room disappeared.

For a moment, I was no longer a businessman.

No longer a CEO.

I was just a husband who missed his wife.

A father afraid of losing the people he loved.

“Mr. Vance?””

I looked up.

“I need time.””

Richard nodded.

“I understand.””

After he left, I sat alone.

I thought about Emily.

About the last conversation we had.

She was in the hospital.

Too weak to stand.

But still worried about me.

Not herself.

Me.

“Promise me something,” she had whispered.

“What?””

“Don’t let success change who you are.””

I held her hand.

“I won’t.””

“Promise.””

“I promise.””

Now I understood.

This wasn’t just about a hotel chain.

It was about everything we built.

Everything she believed in.

Everything I promised to protect.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I called Marcus Whitmore.

His assistant answered.

“Mr. Whitmore’s office.””

“This is Ethan Vance.””

A pause.

Then immediate silence.

“Mr. Vance?””

“Yes.””

“I’ll connect you.””

A few seconds later, a familiar voice answered.

“Ethan.””

Older.

Calmer.

But still arrogant.

“Marcus.””

“I heard congratulations are in order.””

“For what?””

“For surviving your family problems.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You’re involved.””

A soft laugh.

“Careful.””

“Did you work with Daniel?””

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel is an ambitious young man.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“It’s a warning.””

I stood.

“What do you want?””

“What I wanted fifteen years ago.””

“And what is that?””

“The company.””

I laughed once.

“You couldn’t buy it then.””

“No.””

He paused.

“But now?””

His words carried confidence.

“Now your own family is helping me get it.””

The line went quiet.

I looked around my office.

At the pictures.

At the memories.

At everything Emily and I built.

“You won’t win.””

Marcus laughed.

“Ethan.””

“Yes?””

“You still think this is about winning.””

A pause.

“It’s about taking.””

The call ended.

I stood there for a long time.

Then I looked at Lily’s picture on my desk.

My daughter.

My reason.

And I made a promise.

Marcus Whitmore wanted a war.

Daniel wanted control.

But they had both forgotten one thing.

I built The Grand Regent from nothing.

I knew how to fight.

May you like

And this time, I wasn’t fighting for money.

I was fighting for my family’s legacy.
