Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew the Truth
The investigation changed everything.
Within forty-eight hours, my entire view of The Grand Regent had shifted.
I always believed problems started at the top.
But I was wrong.
Sometimes problems grow quietly in the middle.
Managers who abuse authority.
Employees who fear speaking.
Systems that reward the wrong behavior.
And leaders who ignore warning signs because the numbers look good.
That was my mistake.
I trusted reports more than reality.
I trusted spreadsheets more than people.
And now I was paying the price.
The most surprising discovery came from someone I almost overlooked.
Lupita.
The housekeeper who had stepped forward in the lobby.
Richard brought her into my office that afternoon.
She looked nervous.
“I’m sorry to bother you, Mr. Vance.””
“You’re not bothering me.””
She sat down carefully.
For a woman who had worked in my hotels for fifteen years, she carried herself with incredible humility.
“Lupita,” I said, “Richard told me you submitted several reports.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you speak directly to management?””
She gave a sad smile.
“I tried.””
“What happened?””
“They told me I was just housekeeping.””
Those words stayed in the room.
Just housekeeping.
As if a person’s job determined their value.
I leaned forward.
“What did you see?””
She took a breath.
“A lot.””
“Tell me.””
She folded her hands.
“Guests being ignored. Employees being threatened. Managers telling workers not to question decisions.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered.
“Daniel.””
I wasn’t surprised.
But hearing it from someone who had no reason to lie made it real.
“He visited often,” Lupita continued.
“He told managers that emotions were bad for business.””
I looked away.
The same words.
The same belief.
“Did he ever mention me?””
She nodded.
“Once.””
“What did he say?””
Lupita looked uncomfortable.
“He said the company would be different when he was in charge.””
Silence.
“When he was in charge?””
“Yes.””
That sentence confirmed my greatest fear.
Daniel wasn’t waiting for the future.
He was trying to take it.
I thanked Lupita and asked Richard to walk her out.
Before she left, she turned back.
“Mr. Vance?””
“Yes?””
“I want you to know something.””
“What?””
“Most of us still believe in what you built.””
I smiled slightly.
“Thank you.””
She nodded.
“Some of us were just afraid.””
After she left, I sat alone.
Afraid.
That word bothered me.
Because fear spreads.
One person creates it.
Ten people accept it.
A hundred people live under it.
And eventually, everyone forgets what freedom feels like.
That evening, I made a decision.
The next company meeting would not be about profits.
It would not be about damage control.
It would be about truth.
But before I could announce it, my assistant rushed into the office.
“Mr. Vance.””
“What happened?””
She looked worried.
“There’s someone downstairs asking to see you.””
“Who?””
She handed me a name.
I stared at it.
My heart stopped for a second.
Because I knew that name.
Someone I hadn’t spoken to in years.
Someone connected to the beginning of everything.
Someone who knew secrets about my company that even I didn’t know.
“Send her up.””
A few minutes later, the elevator doors opened.
A woman stepped out.
Older now.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Ethan.””
I stood.
“Claire.””
She looked around the office.
Then at me.
“I heard what happened.””
“How?””
She gave a sad smile.
“Because Daniel made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“He forgot that people talk.””
I waited.
Claire walked closer.
“Ethan, there’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
She lowered her voice.
“Your nephew isn’t trying to damage the company.””
I frowned.
“Then what is he trying to do?””
Her answer froze me.
“He’s trying to take it.””
The room went silent.
May you like
But then she added the words that changed everything.
“And he’s not working alone.””
