Chapter 14: The Family Secret That Changed Everything

Denver had always been a place Ethan remembered with mixed emotions.

It was where he met Sarah.

Where he built the first version of his company.

Where he became a father.

It was also where he lost the person he loved most.

Now he returned searching for answers.

Not memories.

Answers.

Rachel met him at the airport.

"I still think this is dangerous.""

Ethan nodded.

"I know.""

"You could have brought security.""

"I don't know who I can trust.""

Rachel didn't argue.

Because she understood.

Trust had become the most dangerous thing in Ethan's world.

The address they found belonged to an old family property.

A house Ethan hadn't visited in years.

His father's old home.

The place where he grew up.

The place where he thought he knew everything about his family.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

But someone had been there recently.

A chair moved.

Fresh footprints.

Someone had been searching.

Rachel looked around.

"Someone beat us here.""

Ethan walked toward his father's old office.

A room filled with old books and documents.

On the wall was a photograph.

His father.

Ethan.

Andrew.

Two brothers standing beside the man who raised them.

Ethan stared at Andrew.

The memories came back.

Andrew had always been different.

While Ethan worked, Andrew dreamed.

While Ethan built, Andrew complained.

Ethan had always believed Andrew was jealous.

But maybe he had been underestimated.

On the desk, Ethan found a hidden compartment.

Inside was a letter.

His father's handwriting.

The date was eight years ago.

Shortly before his death.

Ethan opened it.

*Ethan,*

*If you are reading this, something has gone wrong.*

His heart tightened.

*I spent years believing I could protect my family by keeping secrets. I was wrong. Secrets do not protect people. They only protect the people who create them.*

Ethan continued reading.

*Andrew is not the person you think he is. Neither am I.*

He stopped.

Rachel looked at him.

"What?""

Ethan handed her the letter.

They read together.

The letter explained everything.

Years earlier, Ethan's father had discovered corruption inside his original business investments.

He had tried to expose it.

But he failed.

Instead, he made a deal.

A deal that protected his sons.

A deal that came with a price.

He allowed certain investors to control parts of the company.

And in exchange, they promised to leave his family alone.

But years later, Ethan unknowingly rebuilt the company bigger than anyone imagined.

He became a threat.

Sarah discovered the truth.

David helped her.

Daniel protected the evidence.

And Andrew...

Andrew had been trapped between loyalty and fear.

Rachel looked up.

"Your father wasn't the mastermind.""

"No.""

Ethan looked at the final page.

"He was trying to clean up his mistake.""

Then they heard a sound.

A door closing.

Someone was inside.

Ethan turned.

"Who's there?""

No answer.

Rachel reached for her phone.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

"Ethan.""

He froze.

Because he knew that voice.

Andrew stepped into the room.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

Not the villain Ethan expected.

The two brothers stared at each other.

For years, they had avoided difficult conversations.

Now there was nowhere to run.

"You came.""

Ethan's voice was cold.

"You knew I would.""

Andrew nodded.

"I hoped you would.""

"You let me think you killed Sarah.""

Andrew looked devastated.

"I never wanted that.""

"Then explain.""

Andrew took a breath.

"Sarah found out the truth.""

"What truth?""

"That our father wasn't the only one involved.""

Ethan waited.

Andrew looked toward the window.

"The people controlling the company had someone inside your circle.""

"Who?""

Andrew's eyes met his.

"Someone you trusted more than anyone.""

Ethan's stomach tightened.

Again.

Another secret.

Another person.

"Who?""

Andrew whispered:

"David.""

Ethan froze.

"But David helped Sarah.""

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

Andrew looked broken.

"Because David was working for both sides.""

The room became silent.

"That doesn't make sense.""

"It does when you know what happened.""

Andrew stepped closer.

"David loved Sarah.""

Ethan stared.

"What?""

"He wasn't just protecting her.""

Andrew's voice dropped.

"He was protecting the woman he wanted to leave everything behind with.""

The words were impossible.

Ethan shook his head.

"No.""

"Sarah was going to leave you?""

The pain in Andrew's voice was obvious.

"She was going to tell you.""

Ethan couldn't breathe.

The entire world seemed to collapse.

Not because he believed Andrew.

Because he didn't know what to believe anymore.

Then Andrew said the sentence that changed everything.

"Sarah wasn't killed because she found the corruption.""

He paused.

"She was killed because she found out who was controlling David.""

Ethan looked at him.

"Who?""

Andrew's eyes filled with fear.

"The person who has been protecting themselves by making everyone else look guilty.""

"Who?""

Andrew whispered:

"Your wife’s closest friend.""

Ethan went still.

Sarah's closest friend.

A person he knew.

A person who attended every birthday.

Every holiday.

Every family event.

Someone who had comforted Lily.

Someone who had cried at Sarah's funeral.

And then Ethan remembered.

The one person who had never been investigated.

Because everyone trusted her.

Rachel looked at him.

"Ethan?""

May you like

He barely spoke.

"Emily.""
