Chapter 13: The Truth Buried Beneath the Hotel

Ethan had spent his entire life believing that truth was something people either had or they didn’t.

Facts.

Documents.

Evidence.

Things that could be placed on a table and examined.

But over the last few days, he learned something different.

Sometimes the truth was buried beneath fear.

Sometimes it was hidden behind loyalty.

And sometimes it was protected by people who were too afraid to speak.

The location Daniel sent was not an office.

Not a hotel.

Not anywhere Ethan expected.

It was an abandoned warehouse near the old industrial district of Chicago.

A place that looked forgotten.

A place where nobody would accidentally walk in.

Ethan parked outside.

Before leaving the car, he checked his phone.

Twenty missed calls.

Rachel.

He ignored them.

Not because he didn't care.

Because if Daniel was telling the truth, bringing more people into this could put them in danger.

He stepped into the warehouse.

"Daniel?""

His voice echoed.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a figure appeared from the shadows.

Daniel Cross.

But he looked nothing like the man Ethan knew.

The confident hotel manager was gone.

His suit was wrinkled.

His face was exhausted.

And his eyes looked like someone who had not slept in days.

"Ethan.""

Ethan stared at him.

"Why?""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I knew you would ask that.""

"Then answer.""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Because I was a coward.""

The honesty surprised Ethan.

"I knew something was wrong three years ago.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"You knew?""

Daniel nodded.

"I didn't know everything.""

"How much did you know?""

Daniel looked away.

"Enough to know Sarah was afraid.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"And you said nothing?""

"I tried.""

"Try harder.""

The anger in Ethan's voice filled the warehouse.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I was supposed to meet Sarah the night she died.""

Ethan froze.

"What?""

"She called me.""

"Why?""

"Because she found something.""

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small notebook.

"I kept this.""

Ethan took it.

The cover was worn.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Sarah's handwriting.

His hands shook.

"Where did you get this?""

"She gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"Because she thought something might happen.""

Ethan opened the first page.

The words were simple.

*If I disappear, trust Daniel. He knows enough to help Ethan find the truth.*

Ethan looked up.

"You were helping her.""

Daniel nodded.

"I was.""

"Then why hide?""

Daniel's face changed.

"Because the person behind this threatened my family.""

The answer stopped Ethan.

"Your family?""

"My daughter.""

A silence followed.

Daniel looked down.

"They knew where she went to school.""

Ethan understood.

Fear wasn't always about yourself.

Sometimes it was about the people you loved.

"What happened after Sarah died?""

Daniel looked toward the broken windows.

"Everyone believed it was an accident.""

"Except you.""

"I knew it wasn't.""

"Why?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Because Sarah had sent me evidence.""

"What evidence?""

"Financial records.""

Ethan stared.

"Of the theft.""

Daniel nodded.

"Millions were moved through shell companies connected to people inside Vance Hospitality.""

"Who?""

Daniel looked at him.

"Victor was right.""

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"About what?""

"The person controlling everything wasn't trying to destroy your company.""

Daniel paused.

"They were trying to take it.""

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then finally said:

"Your brother.""

The word felt impossible.

Ethan stared.

"My brother?""

Daniel nodded.

"Andrew Vance.""

The name echoed in Ethan's mind.

Andrew.

His younger half-brother.

The person who rarely appeared in business meetings.

The person everyone considered harmless.

Ethan hadn't thought about him in years.

"Andrew doesn't have access.""

Daniel looked at him sadly.

"He did.""

"How?""

"Sarah found out he had been using your company accounts.""

Ethan shook his head.

"No.""

Daniel didn't argue.

Because he knew disbelief was normal.

"Sarah was going to expose him.""

Ethan looked down at the notebook.

"And David?""

"David found out too.""

"Then why did he run?""

"Because Andrew threatened him.""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Threatened him with what?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"With Sarah.""

The words cut deeper than Ethan expected.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel didn't speak.

That was when Ethan noticed something.

A second envelope hidden inside the notebook.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Sarah standing with Andrew.

But not like family.

Like enemies.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*He knows what he did.*

Ethan stared.

Then his phone rang.

Rachel.

This time he answered.

"Ethan!""

Her voice was urgent.

"Where are you?""

"With Daniel.""

A pause.

"Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"Ethan...""

Something in her voice changed.

"What?""

"I found something about Andrew.""

Ethan waited.

"He's not in Chicago.""

"Where is he?""

Rachel hesitated.

"Denver.""

Ethan felt a strange chill.

Denver.

The place he and Lily had flown from.

The place where Sarah had lived.

The place where everything began.

"What did you find?""

Rachel's voice became quieter.

"Andrew wasn't hiding from you.""

"Then who?""

"Someone else.""

"Who?""

A pause.

Then:

"Your father.""

Ethan stopped.

His father had been dead for eight years.

"That's impossible.""

"I know.""

Rachel sounded shaken.

"But someone used his name to open a private account.""

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked terrified.

Because both of them understood.

This was bigger than Andrew.

Bigger than Sarah.

Someone had been controlling the story from the beginning.

And Ethan had spent three years looking at the wrong enemy.
