Chapter 6: What My Wife Left Behind
I didn't open Rachel's letter immediately.
I couldn't.
I sat at the kitchen table with both hands resting on the envelope.
Rebecca sat across from me.
Lily had taken the yellow book to the living room and was carefully turning its pages.
She stopped every few seconds to point at a picture.
"Look, Daddy! A rabbit!""
I smiled weakly.
"I see him, sweetheart.""
Then I looked at Rebecca.
"Did you know about this letter?""
She shook her head.
"No. Emily told me Rachel had written something for you, but she never said where it was.""
"Why didn't she give it to me herself?""
Rebecca looked down.
"Because she was afraid you wouldn't want to hear from her.""
I frowned.
"Why would she think that?""
"She told me you were very protective of Lily. She thought you'd misunderstand the arrangement.""
I looked at the envelope.
"What arrangement?""
Rebecca took a breath.
"Emily had decided to establish a trust for Lily. Rachel wanted to make sure it was handled properly.""
I leaned back.
"Why would Rachel think I'd misunderstand?""
"Because you always wanted to provide everything yourself.""
I almost laughed.
That sounded like Rachel.
She'd spent years telling me that accepting help wasn't weakness.
I'd spent years ignoring her.
Rebecca continued.
"Emily believed Lily deserved opportunities beyond what one person could provide. Rachel agreed.""
I looked toward the living room.
Lily was holding the yellow book against her chest.
"She already has everything she needs.""
Rebecca smiled.
"I believe you.""
"Then why the money?""
"Because Emily wanted to help children who might otherwise miss out on things they loved.""
I looked at the letter again.
Then I carefully opened it.
Rachel's handwriting filled three pages.
My Bear,
If you're reading this, then Emily kept her promise.
I know you. I know you'll probably be sitting somewhere with your jaw clenched, trying to figure out why I arranged something without telling you.
Please don't be angry.
I smiled despite myself.
Even from beyond the grave, my wife knew exactly how stubborn I could be.
I continued.
When I was sick, I worried about Lily more than anything else. I worried that she would grow up believing the world was smaller because I wasn't there.
I worried that you would try so hard to protect her that you would forget to let her discover things on her own.
I paused.
That one hurt.
Because it was true.
I had become so afraid of losing Lily that sometimes I wanted to wrap the entire world in bubble wrap.
Rachel had known that would happen.
Emily offered to help us. She wanted to create a fund for Lily's education and interests. I accepted because I knew she would never use money to control our daughter.
She also promised to keep the fund available for another little girl who might need it one day.
I turned the page.
There is one condition I asked Emily to include.
My eyes moved to the next paragraph.
*Lily must never be made to feel that she owes anyone anything because of this gift. She must never be treated as less than another child. If she wants to dance, let her dance.
If she wants to ride motorcycles with you, let her ride. If she wants to become an astronaut, buy her a telescope.*
I stopped.
My vision blurred.
Rebecca quietly pushed a box of tissues toward me.
I shook my head.
"I'm okay.""
She didn't argue.
I continued reading.
And Bear, please remember something.
The people who love Lily will never ask her to become someone else just to make them comfortable.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
You were always enough for her. Please let her know she is enough too.
I lowered the letter.
For a long moment, I couldn't speak.
Then Lily appeared beside me.
"Daddy?""
I wiped my face quickly.
"Hey, sweetheart.""
She looked at the letter.
"Is that Mommy?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did she write me something?""
I looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca smiled and nodded.
I lifted Lily onto my lap.
"She did.""
"What does it say?""
I brushed her hair away from her eyes.
"It says you're loved.""
Lily smiled.
"I know.""
I kissed her forehead.
"She also said you should never let anyone make you feel small.""
Lily considered that.
Then she pointed at my shoulders.
"You're big enough for both of us.""
I laughed.
"That's true.""
She wrapped her arms around me.
And I held her.
For a few minutes, the world was quiet.
Then Rebecca cleared her throat.
"There's something else.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She reached into her bag and removed a thick document folder.
"Emily's attorney asked me to deliver this to you if I ever found your family.""
I opened it.
There were copies of the trust agreement, correspondence with the school, and a formal list of beneficiaries.
I skimmed the first page.
Then I stopped.
"Wait.""
Rebecca leaned forward.
"What?""
I pointed to the names.
"Lily Malone.""
"Yes.""
"Olivia Whitmore.""
"Yes.""
I looked at the next line.
There was a third name.
Mara Ellison.
I frowned.
"Why is Lily's ballet teacher listed here?""
Rebecca looked surprised.
"She is?""
I checked the document again.
The trust included a provision for an educational scholarship program administered by an independent committee.
Mara's name appeared beside the words:
Independent educational representative.
I stared at it.
"Does Mara know?""
Rebecca shook her head.
"I don't think so.""
I picked up my phone.
I was about to call her when another document caught my attention.
It was a letter from the trust's attorney.
The letter explained that Emily had specifically requested an independent review of any attempt to change the beneficiaries.
She had also appointed a second person to oversee the process.
I read the name.
Richard Whitmore.
I leaned back.
That explained why Richard had called me.
He wasn't simply a wealthy donor trying to make amends.
He had a responsibility to the trust.
And Patricia had been trying to pressure the very institution that was supposed to protect it.
I called Richard.
He answered immediately.
"Did you receive Rachel's letter?""
"Yes.""
"I'm glad.""
"Richard, I have the trust documents.""
"Good.""
"Why didn't you tell me you were listed as an administrator?""
He exhaled.
"Because I wanted to speak with you about Emily first. I didn't want the money to become the reason you agreed to meet me.""
I appreciated that.
"Patricia knows?""
"She knows about the fund.""
"Does she know I'm reading these documents?""
"Not yet.""
I looked at the paperwork.
"She needs to stop contacting the school about Lily.""
"I agree.""
"And I want the scholarship process reviewed.""
"It will be.""
"Not by you alone.""
Richard was silent.
Then he said, "That's fair.""
I looked toward Lily.
She was now showing Rebecca how to make a rabbit out of two fingers.
"Richard, I don't want my daughter dragged into a fight over money.""
"Neither do I.""
"Then we keep her out of it.""
"I promise.""
After hanging up, I called Mara.
She answered while I was still looking through the documents.
"Bear?""
"Are you sitting down?""
"Why?""
"Because I think you need to see something.""
I explained the trust.
The scholarship.
Her name as the independent educational representative.
Mara was quiet for several seconds.
Then she whispered, "Emily asked for me?""
"Apparently.""
"I barely knew her.""
"Maybe she knew enough.""
Mara let out a shaky breath.
"What happens now?""
"Now we make sure nobody gets to decide Lily's future based on the size of her father's motorcycle boots.""
Mara laughed softly.
Then her voice became serious.
"Bear, I need to tell you something.""
"What?""
"I found the assistant instructor who took the hallway photograph.""
"Good.""
"She reviewed the security footage again this morning.""
"And?""
"There's something we missed.""
I sat straighter.
"What?""
"Patricia wasn't alone when she spoke to Lily.""
I looked at the photograph.
Olivia.
"Her daughter was there.""
"Yes.""
"What did Olivia do?""
Mara hesitated.
"She didn't laugh.""
I frowned.
"Lily told me she did.""
"That's what I thought too. But the video shows something different.""
I felt my pulse quicken.
"What does it show?""
Mara lowered her voice.
"Olivia was crying.""
I stared at the phone.
"Why?""
"Because Patricia told her something too.""
"What?""
Mara took a breath.
"She told Olivia that if she kept being friends with Lily, she would lose her place in the ballet program.""
I closed my eyes.
So this wasn't just about my daughter.
Patricia had been using her own child as a weapon too.
"Does the video have sound?""
"Yes.""
I stood.
"Send it to me.""
"I can't send confidential footage without authorization.""
"Then let's get authorization.""
Mara was quiet.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Bear, there's another reason you need to see it.""
"What?""
"At the end of the recording, Patricia says something about Rachel.""
I stopped breathing for a moment.
"What did she say?""
Mara's voice trembled.
"She said your wife had made a terrible mistake choosing Emily.""
I stared at the kitchen wall.
Then Mara added:
"And she said she was going to make sure Lily never received what Rachel promised her.""
I looked at the pink ribbon in my hand.
For two years, I'd believed Rachel's story was over.
May you like
Now I was beginning to realize someone had been trying to rewrite it.
And that someone had been standing right in front of my daughter all along.
