Chapter 10: The Secret About the Night Lily Was Born
Nobody moved.
Rachel's face remained frozen on the laptop screen.
Her final sentence hung in the room.
Patricia Whitmore was at the hospital that night because she was afraid I would tell you what she had done.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Rebecca.
Then Thomas.
"Play it again.""
Daniel restarted the recording.
Rachel appeared, sitting against a white hospital pillow. Her wedding ring was visible on her left hand. Her voice was weak, but her eyes were clear.
"If Duke is watching this, then Emily couldn't keep her promise.""
She paused to catch her breath.
"Bear, there's something I never told you about the night Lily was born.""
I leaned closer.
"Patricia Whitmore was at the hospital that night because she was afraid I would tell you what she had done.""
Rachel looked down.
Then she continued.
"When Lily was born, she needed immediate medical attention. There were complications, and the doctors were worried about her breathing. I was terrified.""
My stomach tightened.
I remembered that night.
The bright lights.
The nurses running between rooms.
The doctor who told me to wait outside.
I remembered sitting in a plastic chair, staring at my hands, praying my daughter would survive.
But I didn't remember Patricia.
Rachel continued.
"Emily was working that night. She stayed with Lily while the doctors treated her. She was wonderful. She kept telling me our little girl was a fighter.""
A faint smile appeared on Rachel's face.
"Then Patricia arrived.""
I stopped breathing.
"She said Olivia had been born earlier that evening. She was also in the neonatal unit. Patricia was frightened, and Emily had been helping both families.""
Rachel shifted in her bed.
"But something happened.""
The screen flickered.
Then Rachel continued.
"Patricia asked Emily to change a medical report.""
Daniel immediately looked up.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Rachel's voice became quieter.
"Olivia had received the wrong medication dosage. Emily caught the mistake before it caused permanent harm. Patricia was afraid the hospital would investigate and that her husband would discover what had happened.""
I stared at the screen.
"What?""
Rachel looked directly into the camera.
"Patricia begged Emily to keep quiet. She said it was an innocent mistake. She said she couldn't lose her family over something that had already been corrected.""
Rachel took another breath.
"Emily refused to change the report. She documented everything.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Then Patricia came to see me.""
Rachel's eyes filled.
"She told me Emily was exaggerating. She asked me to convince Emily to stay quiet.""
Rachel shook her head.
"I told her no.""
I remembered something.
The night Lily was born, Rachel had asked me to stay with her.
She'd held my hand and said she needed to talk to someone.
I had assumed she was frightened.
I hadn't known she was carrying a secret.
Rachel continued.
"Patricia told me that if the incident became public, Olivia could be taken away from her. She said she couldn't survive that.""
Rachel looked down at her wedding ring.
"I told her that the truth was more important than her reputation.""
The recording paused briefly.
Then Rachel said something that made my blood run cold.
"Three days later, someone tried to access Lily's medical records using my name.""
Daniel sat upright.
"That's serious.""
I didn't answer.
Rachel continued.
"I reported it. Emily helped me document everything. But Patricia was connected to several people who had influence at the hospital.""
Her voice trembled.
"I was afraid, Bear. Not for myself. For Lily.""
I clenched my hands.
"That's why Emily created the trust. She wanted Lily to have protection if anything happened to me.""
Rachel leaned closer to the camera.
"And that's why I need you to know something.""
She paused.
"Emily didn't just promise to look after Lily. She promised to protect the truth.""
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the laptop fan.
Then I stood.
"Patricia changed a medical record?""
Daniel raised one hand.
"Let's be careful. This recording is an allegation. We need the original hospital documents and an independent review.""
I looked at him.
"Then let's get them.""
Thomas removed another file from the wooden box.
"Emily anticipated that you might ask.""
He opened it.
Inside were copies of hospital correspondence, incident reports, and a signed statement from Emily.
The statement described the medication error and the pressure she had allegedly received to alter the documentation.
At the bottom was the name of the hospital's former medical director.
I recognized it.
St. Mary's.
The same hospital where Rachel had spent her final months.
Rebecca stared at the papers.
"Emily kept everything.""
Thomas nodded.
"She believed someone might eventually need it.""
Daniel carefully examined the documents.
"These records are potentially important. I'll arrange an independent verification.""
I looked at Rachel's frozen face.
She had known.
She had known there was something wrong, and she'd tried to protect Lily.
But there was something I still didn't understand.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
Rebecca answered quietly.
"She was afraid you'd confront Patricia.""
I looked at her.
"She knew me pretty well.""
"She loved you. She also knew you would do anything to protect your family.""
I looked away.
I wasn't proud of how quickly anger came to me.
But Rachel had spent her final months worrying about our daughter.
And I had spent two years believing there was nothing left to discover.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Richard.
Patricia knows you're investigating Emily's documents. She just called me. We need to talk.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
"Bear, where are you?""
"With Daniel.""
"Listen carefully. Patricia has just contacted the academy board. She's demanding that Lily's scholarship be terminated immediately.""
I closed my eyes.
"On what grounds?""
"She claims the trust documents are fraudulent.""
Daniel reached for the phone.
"Mr. Whitmore, this is Daniel Foster. I'm the attorney representing the trust's interests. Has Patricia submitted any new evidence?""
Richard paused.
"She's claiming Emily was mentally unstable when the trust was created.""
Rebecca looked furious.
Daniel remained calm.
"That allegation will need to be supported by evidence.""
"I know.""
Then Richard lowered his voice.
"There's something else. Patricia knows about the recording.""
I stared at the screen.
"How?""
"She was contacted by someone at the hospital. Apparently, she's already trying to get ahead of whatever comes next.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was taking notes.
"Richard, where is she now?""
"At the academy.""
I stood.
"Then she can wait.""
"Bear, don't go there angry.""
I looked toward the laptop.
Rachel's face was still on the screen.
"I won't.""
But as I reached for my jacket, Richard added one final sentence.
"She brought Olivia with her.""
I stopped.
Because suddenly, this wasn't just about what Patricia had done to Lily.
May you like
It was about what she was doing to her own daughter.
And I wasn't going to let another five-year-old become collateral damage.
