Calm

Chapter 8: The Person Who Wanted Robert Brooks Forgotten Forever

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air like a storm cloud.

*The person who ordered your death was standing beside you the entire time.*

Helen looked at Robert.

Robert looked at James.

And for the first time since returning from the dead, Robert looked genuinely afraid.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Marcus noticed.

That scared him more than anything else.

Because Robert Brooks was not a man who frightened easily.

“What do you mean?”” Marcus asked.

James looked toward the window.

“I mean Thomas Vale was never the one in charge.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then who was?””

James didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he placed the envelope on the table.

“The truth is inside.””

Nobody touched it.

Because everyone understood something.

The moment they opened that envelope, there would be no going back.

Helen looked at her brother.

“You knew?””

James looked at her.

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Long enough.””

Her expression hardened.

“You watched all of this happen.””

James looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

Helen’s voice was calm now.

And that was somehow more powerful.

“You made choices.””

James accepted that.

“You’re right.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Open the envelope.””

James nodded.

Inside were several pages.

Old handwritten notes.

Photographs.

And a document with one name circled.

Daniel picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He handed the paper over.

Marcus read the name.

And froze.

Because the person listed at the top wasn’t Thomas.

Wasn’t Caleb.

Wasn’t James.

It was someone much closer.

Someone who had been part of Robert’s life for decades.

Someone nobody had questioned.

Marcus looked up slowly.

“Robert.””

Robert took the paper.

His face changed.

“No.””

Helen stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Robert didn’t answer.

She took the paper from his hand.

Then she saw.

And the world seemed to stop.

Because the name on the page belonged to someone they both knew.

Someone who had attended family dinners.

Someone who had stood beside Robert during his hardest years.

Someone who had always claimed to be helping.

*David Miller.*

“Who is David Miller?”” Ethan asked.

Robert sat down slowly.

Nobody had ever seen him look this defeated.

“An old friend.””

Marcus frowned.

“You never mentioned him.””

Robert looked at him.

“Because I thought he was dead.””

That sentence changed everything.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Dead?””

Robert nodded.

“Years ago, David and I worked together.””

“On what?””

Robert looked at the documents.

“The first investigation.””

Marcus looked confused.

“I thought you found the evidence alone.””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“David helped me.””

Helen stared.

“You trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Robert looked toward the fireplace.

“David found the first documents.””

“Then why isn’t he in any of the stories?””

Robert’s expression became painful.

“Because he disappeared.””

Twenty years earlier.

Robert Brooks was not just repairing motorcycles and fixing farm equipment.

He had a second life.

Not a secret life.

A hidden responsibility.

He helped people who were being cheated.

Farmers.

Small business owners.

Families who had signed papers they didn’t understand.

David Miller had been the person who brought him the first case.

A farmer who lost everything.

A contract that looked normal.

A signature that seemed harmless.

But behind it was a system designed to take control.

Robert and David began investigating.

And they discovered something bigger than they expected.

Thomas Vale wasn’t the creator.

He was only a worker.

A businessman carrying out someone else’s plan.

The person truly controlling everything stayed hidden.

Until David got too close.

Then he vanished.

Everyone assumed he was dead.

Including Robert.

“But if David is alive…”

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Then he was never a victim.””

Robert shook his head.

“Maybe he was.””

Everyone looked at him.

Robert continued.

“Maybe something happened to him.””

Marcus frowned.

“Something that made him change?””

Robert nodded.

“That’s possible.””

James laughed quietly.

Everyone turned.

“You still defend people.””

James looked at Robert.

“Even after they destroy everything.””

Robert stared at him.

“Why are you really here, James?””

The question surprised him.

James looked away.

“Because Thomas is losing control.””

“Why do you care?””

James was silent.

Then he answered.

“Because when people like Thomas lose control…”

He looked at Helen.

“Everyone around them gets hurt.””

That night, nobody slept.

Too many questions.

Too many secrets.

And too many people who had lied.

Marcus sat alone in the workshop.

The place where Robert had hidden everything.

The place where a dead man’s secrets had come back to life.

Robert walked in.

“You always liked quiet places.””

Marcus looked up.

“You always liked hiding things.””

Robert accepted the criticism.

“I deserve that.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why did you really come back?””

Robert sat beside him.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

“Thomas was never afraid of me.””

Marcus waited.

“He was afraid of what I knew.””

Marcus looked toward the files.

“And now?””

Robert sighed.

“Now everyone knows.””

A pause.

“Which means everyone is in danger.””

Marcus studied him.

“Why didn’t you tell Helen?””

Robert looked down.

“Because I loved her.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Robert nodded.

“You’re right.””

He looked toward the house.

“The truth is…”

His voice became quieter.

“I was ashamed.””

Marcus said nothing.

“I spent my whole life protecting people.””

Robert smiled sadly.

“And the one person I wanted to protect most was the person I hurt.””

The next morning, James was gone.

His room was empty.

No note.

No explanation.

Only one thing remained.

A map.

Daniel found it under the bed.

“Marcus.””

Everyone gathered.

The map showed the county.

Several locations were marked.

Old farms.

Abandoned buildings.

Storage facilities.

And one location circled heavily.

The old Brooks property.

Helen frowned.

“That’s here.””

Robert looked closer.

“No.””

“What?””

“That’s not the farm.””

He pointed.

“It’s underneath the farm.””

Everyone became quiet.

Daniel looked at him.

“Underneath?””

Robert nodded.

“There was an old underground storage area.””

Helen looked confused.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“Most people didn’t.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would there be a storage area?””

Robert looked at the map.

“Because that’s where the original records were kept.””

Daniel understood.

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

“But if the evidence is there…”

Robert’s expression changed.

“Then Thomas knows.””

They reached the hidden entrance behind the old workshop.

Robert moved aside several wooden boards.

Beneath them was a metal door.

Helen stared.

“You hid this from me?””

Robert looked at her.

“I was trying to keep you away from it.””

She looked at him.

“Again.””

The word hurt.

But Robert didn’t argue.

Because he knew she was right.

Marcus opened the door.

A cold wave of air escaped.

Inside was a narrow staircase.

The group descended slowly.

At the bottom was a small underground room.

Dust covered everything.

Old boxes lined the walls.

And in the center sat a locked metal container.

Robert approached it.

“This is it.””

Daniel looked around.

“You never opened it?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I never had the key.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Then why hide it?””

Robert reached into his pocket.

And pulled out a small key.

Everyone stared.

“You had it?””

Robert looked embarrassed.

“I found it yesterday.””

Daniel frowned.

“Where?””

Robert looked toward Helen.

“In the envelope she gave me before I left.””

Helen froze.

“I never gave you an envelope.””

Robert’s face changed.

“What?””

Everyone went silent.

Robert reached into his coat.

The key.

The one he thought Helen had given him.

Was suddenly not there.

Someone had taken it.

And they realized the truth at the same moment.

They were not alone.

A sound came from behind them.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Coming down the stairs.

Marcus turned.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a voice echoed from the darkness.

“You really should have stopped looking.””

Everyone froze.

Because they knew that voice.

Thomas Vale.

He stepped into the light.

But he wasn’t alone.

Behind him stood another person.

Someone holding a folder.

Someone Robert recognized immediately.

Someone who should have never been there.

David Miller.

Alive.

Robert stared.

His face went pale.

“David…”

David looked at him.

“I’m sorry, Robert.””

A pause.

“But you were never supposed to find this room again.””

Helen stepped back.

Because the man Robert trusted.

The man everyone thought was dead.

Was standing beside Thomas.

And smiling.

David looked at the metal container.

“You spent twenty years protecting the wrong thing.””

Marcus moved forward.

“What are you talking about?””

David looked at him.

“The records inside that box aren’t the secret.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then what is?””

David smiled.

“The person who created them.””

He looked directly at Robert.

“And Robert Brooks has been protecting that person his entire life.””

The room went silent.

Because the truth they had chased for days…

Was still only the beginning.

David stepped closer.

“Open the box.””

Robert didn’t move.

“Why?””

David’s smile disappeared.

“Because inside is the reason your wife was targeted.””

Helen’s face went pale.

“My name?””

David looked at her.

“No.””

May you like

A pause.

“Your bloodline.””
