Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For several seconds, the entire farmhouse seemed frozen.

Helen’s hand slowly rose to her mouth.

Her eyes locked onto the figure standing outside.

The man near the truck.

The man who had walked onto her property as if he had every right to be there.

The man who looked exactly like someone she had buried two years earlier.

“Robert…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Marcus stared through the window.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

It couldn’t be.

It was impossible.

Robert Brooks was dead.

He had seen the records.

He had heard the story.

He had watched Helen grieve.

But the man standing in the driveway…

Had Robert’s face.

His posture.

Even the same way he stood with one hand resting on the truck door.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Tell me that’s not who I think it is.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he couldn’t.

The front door suddenly opened.

Helen stepped outside.

“Robert?””

The man froze.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then his face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

All at once.

“Helen…”

The sound of his voice destroyed the last bit of doubt.

She stumbled backward.

“No.””

The man took a step forward.

“Please.””

“No.””

Her voice became louder.

“You’re dead.””

The man looked down.

“I know.””

Those two words broke something inside her.

Because they confirmed the impossible.

He knew.

He knew she believed he was gone.

He knew she had spent two years mourning him.

Marcus and the others walked outside.

Daniel stood beside Helen.

Not because they wanted to attack Robert.

Because they didn’t know what they were looking at.

A ghost?

A lie?

Or the biggest secret Robert Brooks had ever hidden.

Marcus stared at him.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

And there was recognition.

“You’re Marcus.””

Marcus froze.

Nobody had introduced him.

“How do you know my name?””

The man looked toward the motorcycle.

“The Harley.””

A pause.

“Robert told me about you.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“Then you are…”

The man nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“I’m Robert Brooks.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Helen stood there, unable to move.

Unable to speak.

Two years of grief collided with two minutes of impossible reality.

Finally, she whispered:

“Why?””

Robert looked at her.

And for the first time, the strong man from the photograph looked broken.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Helen stared at him.

“Protecting me?””

Her voice trembled.

“You let me think you were dead.””

Robert looked away.

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

She stepped closer.

“I buried you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I held your photograph at your funeral.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“How?””

The question came out sharper.

“How would you know?””

Robert said nothing.

And that silence hurt more than any answer.

Helen shook her head.

“I don’t understand.””

Robert looked toward the farmhouse.

“Can we go inside?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Not until you explain one thing.””

Robert looked at him.

“What?””

“Why did everyone think you died?””

Robert took a deep breath.

“Because someone wanted me gone.””

Inside the house, nobody sat.

Nobody trusted the situation enough to relax.

Robert stood near the fireplace.

The same fireplace where Helen had spent countless nights remembering him.

But now he was standing there.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

“I never wanted this,” Robert said.

Helen crossed her arms.

“Then explain.””

Robert looked at her.

“I found something.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“The land deals.””

Robert nodded.

“But not just the land deals.””

He looked toward the files on the table.

“I discovered Thomas Vale was using fake companies to pressure farmers into giving away control of their properties.””

Daniel nodded.

“We know that part.””

Robert looked surprised.

“You found the files?””

Marcus answered.

“In your workshop.””

Robert’s expression changed.

“You found the cabinet.””

“Yes.””

A small, sad smile appeared.

“You always were good at finding things.””

Marcus ignored the compliment.

“You knew this was coming.””

Robert nodded.

“I knew Thomas wouldn’t stop.””

Helen stared.

“So you faked your death?””

Robert looked at her.

“Yes.””

The answer landed like a physical blow.

She stepped back.

“You let me suffer.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe I lost you.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Her voice broke.

“Do you really know what that felt like?””

Robert looked away.

Because he did.

And because there was nothing he could say that would make it right.

“I thought if Thomas believed I was gone, he would stop looking.””

Helen laughed sadly.

“Did he?””

Robert looked toward the documents.

“No.””

Marcus studied Robert carefully.

There was one thing he couldn’t ignore.

“Why come back now?””

Robert looked at him.

“Because they found the evidence.””

Daniel frowned.

“What evidence?””

“The original records.””

“The ones hidden here?””

Robert nodded.

“Those documents prove everything.””

Marcus looked at the files.

“Then why were you hiding them?””

“Because I didn’t know who I could trust.””

The answer surprised everyone.

Helen looked hurt.

“Not even me?””

Robert’s face changed.

Especially then.

“I trusted you more than anyone.””

“Then why?””

Robert struggled for words.

“Because Thomas had people everywhere.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“Including your son?””

Robert became silent.

Everyone noticed.

Helen’s face changed.

“You knew about Ethan?””

Robert looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Then you knew he was involved?””

“No.””

Robert shook his head.

“Not like that.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Explain.””

Robert walked toward the table.

He picked up the document with Ethan’s name.

“He was manipulated.””

Daniel nodded.

“We figured that out.””

Robert looked surprised.

“You know?””

Marcus pointed to Ethan’s file.

“It says unaware participant.””

Robert looked at him.

“Good.””

“Good?””

Robert sighed.

“That means Ethan hasn’t crossed the line.””

Helen looked confused.

“What line?””

Robert’s expression became serious.

“The line between being used and becoming one of them.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

Ethan stood there.

His face changed the moment he saw Robert.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Dad?””

Robert looked at him.

The emotion between them was impossible to hide.

Ethan stepped forward.

“You’re alive.””

Robert nodded.

But Ethan didn’t move closer.

Instead, anger appeared.

“You’re alive?””

His voice grew louder.

“You’re alive and you let us think you were dead?””

Helen looked at him.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

He looked at Robert.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

Robert accepted the anger.

“I know.””

“You know?””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“I destroyed everything because I thought you were gone.””

Robert’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Ethan looked away.

The silence answered.

Helen closed her eyes.

Robert looked at Marcus.

“What happened?””

Marcus told him.

The auction.

The documents.

Thomas.

The forged signature.

Everything.

Robert listened.

Then his expression became one of disappointment.

Not anger.

That was worse.

Ethan noticed.

“I’m sorry.””

Robert looked at him.

“Are you?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell the truth.””

Ethan swallowed.

“I already did.””

“Not everything.””

The room became silent.

Ethan looked shocked.

“What?””

Robert stepped closer.

“Who helped you?””

Ethan looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Who introduced you to Thomas?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Robert’s voice became firmer.

“Ethan.””

Finally, Ethan whispered:

“Caleb.””

Robert froze.

“Caleb what?””

“I told you. I don’t know his last name.””

Robert’s expression changed.

Because the name meant something.

“What?””

Helen noticed.

“Robert?””

He looked toward the window.

“Caleb wasn’t supposed to be here.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Robert looked at them.

“It means Thomas has someone else working with him.””

“Who?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the old workshop.

Everyone followed.

Inside, Robert went straight to the wooden cabinet.

He opened a hidden compartment beneath the bottom shelf.

From inside, he removed a small envelope.

“I was hoping I’d never need this.””

Marcus looked at it.

“What is it?””

Robert opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Everyone leaned closer.

The picture showed several people standing together.

Thomas Vale.

Caleb.

And another person.

A person nobody expected.

Helen’s face turned pale.

Because she knew that person.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus stared.

“Who is that?””

Robert looked at the photograph.

“The person who helped Thomas start everything.””

Daniel took the picture.

His eyes widened.

Because the final piece of the puzzle had just appeared.

The enemy wasn’t outside the family.

It had been inside all along.

The person standing beside Thomas wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been welcomed into Helen’s home.

Someone who had eaten at their table.

Someone Robert had trusted.

Someone they never suspected.

Robert looked at Helen.

And quietly said:

“I’m sorry.””

She stared at him.

“Who is it?””

Robert took a breath.

Then answered.

“Your brother.””

The room went silent.

Because the secret buried beneath the farm wasn’t just about money.

It was about betrayal.

May you like

And the person who started it all…

Was family.
