Chapter 9: The Bracelet Returns Home

A week later, we visited Emily’s favorite place.

The small garden behind our old house.

The place where she used to sit with Sophie when she was a baby.

Sophie carried the bracelet in her hands.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Can I wear it?””

I smiled.

“Of course.””

She looked nervous.

“What if I lose it?””

I knelt beside her.

“Then we’ll find it.””

She smiled.

“And if we can’t?””

I touched her shoulder.

“Then we’ll still have everything that matters.””

She looked at the bracelet again.

“My mommy gave this to me.””

“Yes.””

“But Vanessa kept it for me.””

“Yes.””

Sophie looked over at Vanessa.

“Thank you.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

That simple sentence meant more than anything.

For years, we had all been protecting Sophie from pain.

But we forgot something important.

Pain wasn’t what broke families.

Secrets did.

As the sun began to set, Sophie placed the bracelet around her wrist.

The heart charm reflected the golden light.

For the first time in ten years, I didn’t feel like I was losing Emily.

I felt like I was finally honoring her.

Because Emily’s love had never disappeared.

It had simply found another way to stay with us.
