Chapter 7: The Letter That Changed Everything

I sat beside Sophie on the kitchen floor, holding her small hand in mine.

“Your mother wanted me to understand something,” I said carefully.

Sophie looked up at me.

“What?””

“That loving someone doesn’t mean being afraid of losing them.””

She was quiet.

For a ten-year-old, Sophie had always understood more than people realized.

“She knew I missed her,” Sophie whispered.

I nodded.

“She knew.””

“Did she know I missed her too?””

My heart cracked.

“Yes, sweetheart. She knew.””

Sophie looked at the bracelet sitting on the table.

“Why did Vanessa have it?””

Before I could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

“Because your mom asked me to keep it safe.””

Sophie looked confused.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because your mother wanted you to receive it when you were ready. Not when you were still hurting.””

Sophie touched the heart-shaped charm.

“She knew me?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“She knew you better than anyone.””

Then Sophie noticed the letters.

“Can I read them?””

I hesitated.

But then I remembered Emily’s words.

A child should remember her mother’s love.

Not her goodbye.

I handed the letters over.

And as Sophie read them, something happened.

She smiled.

Not cried.

Smiled.

May you like

Because Emily wasn’t a memory anymore.

She was a mother speaking across time.
