Chapter 9: The Estate Nobody Knew Existed

The next morning, I met Daniel at his office.

I barely slept the night before.

Not because I was excited about another property.

I had enough.

More than enough.

The house on the hill wasn’t valuable because of the price tag.

It was valuable because it represented freedom.

But another hidden estate?

Another secret?

That wasn’t what interested me.

What interested me was one question.

Why had my mother hidden it?

Daniel greeted me with a serious expression.

“Paige.””

“Daniel.””

He motioned toward the chair.

“I know this is a lot.””

“That’s an understatement.””

He gave a small smile.

“Your mother was very careful.””

“She always was.””

He opened a file.

“This property was purchased almost fifteen years ago.””

I frowned.

“That would have been before she died.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone know?””

“Because it was placed under a private trust.””

I looked at the documents.

“And my father?””

“He knew the trust existed.””

“But not the property?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That appears to be the case.””

I leaned back.

“My entire family has been hiding things from me.””

He didn’t respond.

Because there was nothing he could say.

He turned the document around.

“This is the address.””

I looked down.

And my breath caught.

Because I recognized the area.

It wasn’t far.

Only a few miles from my current home.

A place I had driven past hundreds of times.

A place I never knew belonged to me.

“Can we see it?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Thirty minutes later, we arrived.

And I immediately understood why my mother kept it secret.

The estate wasn’t like my modern hillside home.

It wasn’t designed to impress people.

It was designed to feel alive.

Large trees surrounded the property.

A stone pathway led to a beautiful old house.

The kind of place that looked like it carried stories.

I stepped out of the car.

And I felt something strange.

Familiar.

Like I had been here before.

Daniel unlocked the gate.

“This place was maintained all these years.””

“By who?””

He looked at the documents.

“Your mother arranged for caretakers.””

I walked slowly toward the house.

The front door opened.

Inside were photographs.

Furniture.

Books.

Memories.

My mother’s presence was everywhere.

Then I saw something on the wall.

A picture of my mother.

Standing beside the house.

Holding me as a child.

I touched the frame.

“She brought me here.””

Daniel nodded.

“She did.””

I turned.

“How do you know?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because there’s a video.””

My heart stopped.

“A video?””

He led me into a small room.

On the table was an old recording device.

Beside it was a note.

My name.

Again.

I sat down.

Daniel pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Then my mother appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Hi, Paige.””

I immediately started crying.

Because hearing her voice was different from reading her words.

It was like time disappeared.

“My sweet girl. If you’re watching this, then you’re finally old enough to understand why I made certain choices.””

She smiled softly.

“I wish I could be there to explain everything myself.””

I covered my mouth.

“I want you to know this house was never meant to be a secret because I didn’t trust you.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I hid it because I wanted you to have one place in the world where nobody could tell you who you were.””

My tears fell.

“This house is not a reward. It is not a symbol of wealth.””

She paused.

“It is your sanctuary.””

I looked around the room.

A sanctuary.

That was exactly what it felt like.

Then her expression changed.

More serious.

“But there is one more thing you need to know.””

I leaned closer.

“The reason I created this place was because I knew there might come a day when you would need somewhere to go.””

My heart tightened.

She knew.

She knew.

“Not because you failed.””

“Because sometimes the people closest to us are the ones who make us forget our own worth.””

I couldn’t breathe.

The recording continued.

“And Paige, if that day comes, promise me one thing.””

My mother smiled.

“Do not return somewhere simply because people finally realize your value.””

The screen froze briefly.

Then she said the final words.

“Make them learn that your value existed all along.””

The video ended.

I sat there in silence.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“There’s another document.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me a folder.

“This was attached to the property transfer.””

I opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

And one name I never expected to see.

Gwendolyn.

My hands went cold.

Because my mother hadn’t just hidden the estate.

She had been investigating something.

May you like

And the truth she discovered…

Was something my family had spent years trying to bury.
