Chapter 12: The Night Everything Changed

I couldn’t move.

The room around me disappeared.

The only thing I could see was that sentence.

The night before my mother died.

Everyone had always told me the same story.

She got sick.

She fought.

She became weaker.

And then one night…

She was gone.

A tragic ending.

A painful ending.

But a simple one.

Except now, nothing felt simple anymore.

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered quickly.

“Paige?””

“What is this?””

“I was hoping you would ask.””

“Who wrote this?””

“Your mother.””

“How?””

Silence.

Then:

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me.

“I need to know everything.””

“I’m sending you the original file.””

A few seconds later, another attachment arrived.

I opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother.

*My dearest Paige,*

*There are things I wanted to tell you myself. Things I wanted to explain when you were older.*

I continued reading.

*But sometimes life does not give us the timing we deserve.*

My eyes filled.

*Your father believes he knows what happened. Others believe they know. But the truth is, there are pieces missing.*

Pieces missing.

My heart pounded.

*Before I passed away, I discovered something that frightened me.*

I stopped.

*Not because I was afraid for myself. I was afraid for you.*

I whispered:

“Mom…”

The letter continued.

*I realized that some people enter our lives carrying wounds they never healed. And if they refuse to face those wounds, they can hurt everyone around them.*

I knew immediately who she meant.

Gwendolyn.

But then came the next sentence.

And it changed everything.

*The person I was most worried about was not Gwendolyn.*

I froze.

Not Gwendolyn?

I kept reading.

*Paige, your father is a good man. But good people can make dangerous mistakes when they are desperate.*

My breath caught.

My mother wasn’t trying to expose someone.

She was trying to warn me.

*The night before I died, I asked your father to promise me something.*

I leaned closer.

*I asked him never to let anyone convince you that you were alone.*

Tears rolled down my face.

Because he had failed.

Not because he didn’t love me.

Because he forgot the promise.

The letter continued.

*If your father has hidden things from you, it is not because he does not love you. It is because he is afraid.*

I closed my eyes.

Even at the end, she was protecting him.

But then the final paragraph appeared.

And everything changed.

*There is one person who knows the full truth about that night. Someone who was there when I made my final decisions.*

My hands shook.

Who?

*Find Evelyn.*

I stared at the name.

Evelyn.

I didn’t know anyone named Evelyn.

Then another line appeared.

*She is the only person who can tell you why I created the second estate.*

I sat back.

The second estate.

The hidden house.

The place my mother called my sanctuary.

There was a reason.

A reason bigger than money.

Bigger than family arguments.

I printed the letter.

Then I searched my mother’s old files.

Nothing.

No Evelyn.

No contact information.

No clue.

Until I opened the last document Daniel had sent.

At the bottom of the property records was an emergency contact.

A name.

A phone number.

My heart stopped.

Because there it was.

*Evelyn Harper.*

The same name.

I grabbed my phone.

My fingers hovered over the number.

I had spent my entire life searching for answers.

And now they were finally within reach.

But something inside me hesitated.

Because I knew one thing.

Answers changed everything.

Once you knew the truth, you couldn’t return to the version of your life you had before.

I pressed call.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman answered.

“Hello?””

My voice caught.

“Is this Evelyn Harper?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“My name is Paige.””

Silence.

Then her breathing changed.

“Paige?””

I froze.

“You know who I am?””

Her voice became emotional.

“I’ve been waiting for this call for years.””

My heart raced.

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Because your mother made me promise that when you were ready…”

I held my breath.

“She told me to tell you the truth.””

The line went quiet.

Then Evelyn said the words I had been waiting my entire life to hear.

May you like

“Paige, your mother didn’t just leave you a house.””

“She left you the truth about who tried to destroy your family.””
