Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Celebration

I read the message three times before I believed it.

Adrian Whitmore.

The CEO of Meridian Dynamics.

The man who had just changed my life in front of hundreds of people.

He wanted to talk about my family.

My first thought was that it had something to do with Vanessa.

My second thought was that I was exhausted and imagining things.

But the message remained on my screen.

Claire, there is something about your family situation you need to know.

I showed it to no one.

Not my parents.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Dad.

Because after years of being dismissed, I had learned one important lesson:

Sometimes people only respect the truth when they can no longer control it.

I left the ballroom alone.

The graduation decorations that had looked beautiful an hour earlier now felt strange.

The flowers.

The banners.

The smiling families taking pictures.

Everyone was celebrating endings.

I felt like I was standing at the beginning of something I didn’t understand.

Outside, I found Dad waiting near the parking lot.

He looked tired.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

For a moment, I expected an apology.

Instead, he sighed.

“Your mother is upset.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course she is.””

“She thinks today got out of hand.””

I looked at him.

“Dad, Vanessa destroyed my offer.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you talking about my reaction?””

He looked down.

Because he didn’t have an answer.

That hurt more than Vanessa’s jealousy.

Dad had always been the person I believed understood me.

But sometimes silence was its own decision.

“She has always struggled with comparison,” he finally said.

“That doesn’t excuse what she did.””

“No.””

He nodded slowly.

“It doesn’t.””

That was the first honest thing anyone in my family had said all day.

Then he surprised me.

“She’s been angry since you got the Meridian offer.””

“I noticed.””

“She thought you were leaving everyone behind.””

I frowned.

“Leaving everyone behind?””

Dad looked uncomfortable.

“Vanessa feels like your success proves she failed.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not my responsibility.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But she made it yours.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because they were true.

For years, I had been managing Vanessa’s emotions without realizing it.

Don’t talk about awards.

Don’t mention grades.

Don’t celebrate too loudly.

Don’t make her feel bad.

But nobody had ever asked how I felt.

A car horn interrupted us.

Mom was waiting.

She rolled down the window.

“Claire, come home. We need to talk.””

I almost refused.

Then I realized something.

I wanted answers.

So I got into the car.

The drive home was silent.

Vanessa sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window.

Not once did she apologize.

Not once did she look back.

When we arrived, Mom immediately started talking.

“You embarrassed the family today.””

I stared at her.

“I embarrassed the family?””

“Yes. Everyone saw the argument.””

I laughed softly.

“You mean everyone saw Vanessa destroy my job offer.””

Mom’s expression tightened.

“She was upset.””

“She was jealous.””

“Don’t say that.””

“Why? Because it’s true?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“You always think you’re better.””

I looked at her.

“No. I think I worked hard.””

“That’s the same thing.””

“No, it isn’t.””

The room became quiet.

Because for once, I wasn’t backing down.

Mom sat down.

“Claire, your sister lost her job.””

“I know.””

“She’s struggling.””

“I know.””

“Then why can’t you understand her?””

I stared at my mother.

Because that question revealed everything.

Everyone wanted me to understand Vanessa.

Nobody wanted Vanessa to understand me.

“I have spent my entire life understanding her.””

My voice cracked.

“When did anyone try to understand me?””

No one answered.

That silence was the answer.

Later that night, I opened my laptop.

I needed distraction.

But when I logged into my Meridian account, I found something waiting.

A private invitation.

A meeting request.

Tomorrow morning.

With Adrian Whitmore.

The subject line made my heart stop.

“Regarding the Bennett Family Partnership.””

I had no idea what that meant.

My family had no partnership with Meridian Dynamics.

At least, I thought we didn’t.

Then I remembered something.

Years ago, before Vanessa lost her job, she had bragged about a “major opportunity” connected to a technology company.

I never asked questions.

Because I trusted her.

Now I wondered if I should have.

The next morning, I arrived at Meridian Dynamics headquarters.

The building was massive.

Glass walls.

Hundreds of employees.

A place I once only imagined seeing from the outside.

Adrian met me personally.

“Claire.””

“Thank you for meeting with me.””

He nodded.

“Before we discuss your future, we need to discuss your past.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does my family have to do with Meridian?””

He placed a folder on the table.

Inside was a document.

A document with Vanessa’s name.

And beneath it was a signature.

My sister had been involved with Meridian Dynamics before I ever received my offer.

But what she had done there…

May you like

was the reason Adrian wanted to speak with me.

And it was something Vanessa had spent months trying to hide.
