Chapter 10: The Betrayal That Reached the Boardroom
The atmosphere inside Meridian Dynamics had changed.
That was the first thing I noticed when I walked through the doors.
Usually, the headquarters felt alive.
Employees moved quickly between departments.
People laughed near the coffee stations.
Teams gathered around screens discussing ideas.
It was a place built on ambition.
But that morning, something was different.
The energy was gone.
People spoke quietly.
Executives walked with serious expressions.
And everyone seemed to know something had happened.
I followed the assistant to the executive floor, my thoughts moving faster than my feet.
This was no longer about Vanessa tearing up a piece of paper.
It wasn’t about jealousy.
It wasn’t even about my career anymore.
A company I was about to join had been damaged.
And somehow, my sister was connected to it.
When I entered the conference room, Adrian was already there.
Several executives sat around the table.
The screen behind them displayed a timeline.
Dates.
Messages.
Documents.
Evidence.
“Claire,” Adrian said.
I nodded.
“Tell me what happened.””
No accusations.
No anger.
Just a request for the truth.
I took a breath.
“My sister was contacted by Ethan Cross.””
Several people exchanged looks.
The name clearly meant something.
One executive leaned forward.
“How close was their relationship?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did she know he intended to harm Meridian?””
I hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Adrian noticed.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“I think she knew he was angry with the company.””
“But?””
“But I don’t think she understood how serious it was.””
The room went quiet.
One executive sighed.
“That does not change the consequences.””
“I know.””
And I did.
I wasn’t there to defend Vanessa’s actions.
I was there because I needed to understand them.
The security director entered carrying another folder.
“We recovered more information.””
He placed it on the table.
“Ethan Cross did not contact Vanessa randomly.””
Everyone looked at him.
“He searched for employees connected to Meridian.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
The director opened the folder.
“Because he wanted access to information without directly attacking the company.””
He looked at me.
“Vanessa was considered an easy entry point.””
That sentence hurt.
Not because it was about Vanessa.
Because I knew exactly why.
She wanted to prove herself.
And someone saw that.
Someone used it.
Adrian looked at the documents.
“How much damage?””
The security director answered carefully.
“We are still calculating.””
Nobody spoke.
“Some internal strategy information was exposed. Nothing catastrophic yet.””
Yet.
That word stayed in my mind.
“Can it be fixed?”” I asked.
The security director looked at Adrian.
“We can contain it.””
“But?””
He hesitated.
“The bigger concern is trust.””
I understood.
A company could survive a technical problem.
A financial loss.
A failed project.
But betrayal from someone inside was different.
Adrian looked at me.
“Claire, I need to ask you something difficult.””
I nodded.
“Did Vanessa ever mention Ethan Cross before?””
I thought back.
“No.””
“Did she ever talk about Meridian after losing her contract?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
I closed my eyes.
“She said Meridian chose the wrong person.””
The room became silent.
The wrong person.
I had heard those words before.
Just not directly.
Adrian looked down.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“She believed Meridian made a mistake choosing you.””
I swallowed.
Because that was the heart of everything.
Vanessa didn’t just want what I had.
She wanted proof that I didn’t deserve it.
After the meeting, Adrian asked me to stay.
Everyone else left.
The room felt enormous.
“Claire.””
“Yes?””
“You need to understand something.””
I waited.
“Your sister’s actions are not your responsibility.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I looked away.
Because maybe I didn’t.
Maybe part of me still felt guilty.
“If I had been less successful…”
Adrian interrupted.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Do not make yourself smaller to explain someone else’s choices.””
The words hit me.
Because that was exactly what I had done my entire life.
Become quieter.
Less noticeable.
Less threatening.
Just to keep peace.
Adrian continued.
“People who love us can still hurt us.””
I nodded.
“But that doesn’t mean we caused their behavior.””
I looked out the window.
For years, I thought success would solve everything.
I thought once I proved myself, everyone would finally understand.
But success didn’t fix relationships.
Sometimes it revealed them.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
I opened it.
I need to tell you the rest.
I stared at the screen.
The rest?
I showed Adrian.
His expression changed.
May you like
“What?””
“She says there’s more.””
