Calm

Chapter 9: The Man My Wife Trusted More Than Me

Richard Cole.

I had heard the name before.

He had attended one of Claire's charity dinners. He had once sent a bottle of wine to our house. He had appeared in a few photographs from events Claire volunteered at.

I had never considered him important.

Now his name was printed on a document granting him access to information about my daughter.

I called Daniel.

“Find out everything you can about Richard.””

“Already working on it.””

“His connection to the clinic. His payments. Anything.””

“Marcus, be careful. If he's involved, he may have access to more information than we think.””

I looked through the window at Maya.

“I don't care about him. I care about what he did to her.””

Daniel sighed.

“I know.””

I ended the call and returned to Maya's room.

She was watching a cartoon with Pickles the dinosaur tucked beneath her arm.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Can I ask something?””

“Always.””

“Who is Richard?””

I stopped.

“Why are you asking?””

“Mom talks to him.””

I pulled a chair closer.

“Do you know him?””

Maya nodded.

“He came to our house.””

“When?””

“A lot of times.””

I tried to keep my voice calm.

“What did he do?””

“He gave Mom papers.””

“What kind of papers?””

“I don't know. Sometimes they talked in the kitchen.””

“Did he ever speak to you?””

Maya nodded.

“He said I was lucky because Mom was spending so much money to help me.””

I felt a knot forming in my chest.

“What else?””

“He said I should listen to Mom because she knew what was best for me.””

I swallowed.

“Did he ever take you anywhere?””

Maya looked down.

“Once.””

“Where?””

“To a place with a mirror room.””

“What was that?””

“I don't know. They took pictures of me.””

I felt my fingers tighten around the chair.

“Was Mom there?””

“Yes.””

“Was Richard there?””

Maya nodded.

“He said I looked different in the pictures.””

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

“Nothing.””

She picked at the edge of her blanket.

“Daddy, I didn't like him.””

I leaned forward.

“Did he ever make you uncomfortable?””

Maya nodded.

“Sometimes he called me his little project.””

My stomach turned.

“What did he mean?””

“I don't know.””

She looked at me.

“But he always talked about my body.””

I took a slow breath.

“Thank you for telling me.””

Maya looked frightened.

“Are you going to tell Mom?””

“No. I'm going to tell the people whose job it is to keep you safe.””

She nodded.

I immediately informed Karen about Maya's statement.

Karen arranged for the safeguarding specialist to document the information and reminded me not to question Maya further.

I agreed.

By late afternoon, the hospital had confirmed that the clinic's records were being preserved.

Claire had not returned.

I didn't know whether to be relieved or worried.

At 5:40 p.m., my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

“Marcus? This is Richard Cole.””

I stood.

“How did you get my number?””

“Claire gave it to me.””

I looked toward Maya.

“Why are you calling?””

“I think we should talk.””

“About what?””

“Your daughter's treatment.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You have no business discussing my daughter.””

Richard sighed.

“Listen, I understand this has been upsetting. But I think you're making assumptions based on incomplete information.””

“Were you paying Hart Wellness?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I was helping Claire.””

“Helping her do what?””

“Give Maya access to a program that could improve her confidence.””

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“You paid strangers to put my daughter on medication without my consent?””

“That isn't what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Claire was desperate. Maya had become increasingly difficult about her appearance. She was refusing to cooperate.””

“She was twelve.””

“Marcus, I don't want to argue.””

“Then stop talking.””

He paused.

Then he said, “You should ask your wife why she needed the money.””

I went still.

“What money?””

“That's something Claire should explain.””

I gripped the phone.

“What did you pay for?””

Richard exhaled.

“I'm not discussing financial arrangements over the phone.””

“You're listed as an authorized family representative.””

“Claire asked me to help with the administrative side.””

“You have no authority over my daughter.””

“Maybe not legally. But I've done more for her than you realize.””

I felt anger rising.

“What does that mean?””

Richard hesitated.

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

“I've been supporting your household for months.””

I stared at the wall.

“What?””

“Your wife told me you were struggling financially. She said you couldn't afford the treatment program.””

I almost laughed.

My salary was more than enough to support our household.

We had savings.

Investments.

A paid-off car.

There was no reason for Claire to ask another man to finance anything for our daughter.

“Why would she tell you that?””

“Marcus, I think you need to speak with Claire.””

“I'm asking you.””

Richard's voice became colder.

“Look, I don't owe you an explanation.””

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I simply stood there.

Then I opened our joint banking app.

I searched the past six months of transactions.

Daniel had already identified several clinic payments.

But now I was looking for something else.

Transfers.

Large withdrawals.

Anything unusual.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then I noticed a series of payments to an account I didn't recognize.

The first was $3,000.

The second was $4,500.

The third was $2,800.

All were labeled as household transfers.

All had been authorized through Claire's online banking access.

I added them.

More than $18,000.

I called the bank's fraud department.

After verifying my identity, I explained that I suspected unauthorized transfers from our joint account.

The representative reviewed the transactions.

“Mr. Bennett, I can see that these transfers were made to an external account ending in 4821.””

“Whose account is it?””

“I'm unable to disclose the account holder's identity without additional verification.””

“Can you tell me when it was added?””

“One moment.””

I waited.

Then the representative returned.

“The external account was added approximately five months ago.””

“By whom?””

“According to the access log, it was added through your wife's online banking profile.””

I closed my eyes.

“Can you freeze future transfers?””

“We can place a temporary security restriction while the investigation is underway.””

“Please do that.””

After the call, I sat beside Maya.

She was asleep again.

I looked at her peaceful face and tried to understand how our family had reached this point.

At 7:15 p.m., Daniel arrived with printed bank statements.

He spread them across the small table.

“I found the destination account.””

I looked up.

“Whose?””

“Richard Cole's consulting company.””

I stared at him.

“Claire was sending him our money?””

“That's what the records appear to show.””

I looked at the statements.

The transfers had started shortly before Maya's first clinic appointment.

Some were labeled as consulting fees.

Others were labeled as reimbursement.

I shook my head.

“Why would she pay him?””

Daniel pointed to a line in the records.

“Look at the dates.””

I followed his finger.

Several transfers had occurred within twenty-four hours of payments to Hart Wellness.

It looked like money was moving between accounts.

But there was something else.

A payment of $6,000 had been made to Richard two weeks earlier.

The memo line read:

*PROGRAM COMPLETION BONUS.*

I stared at it.

“Completion bonus?””

Daniel nodded.

“Marcus, I think he was being paid for more than administrative help.””

Before I could answer, a nurse entered.

“Mr. Bennett, your wife is here.””

I stood.

Claire walked into the room wearing a cream coat.

She looked at the papers on the table.

Then at Daniel.

Her face tightened.

“What is he doing here?””

“Helping me understand what you've been doing.””

Claire laughed sharply.

“You have no right to go through my finances.””

I pointed to the bank statements.

“They're joint accounts.””

“You're invading my privacy.””

“You've transferred more than eighteen thousand dollars to Richard Cole.””

Claire went completely still.

Maya stirred in her sleep.

I lowered my voice.

“Why?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Can you leave us alone?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I'm staying.””

Claire turned back toward me.

“Richard was helping me.””

“With what?””

She hesitated.

Then she said, “He was helping me protect Maya.””

I stared at her.

“From what?””

Claire's eyes filled.

“From you.””

The words hung in the room.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“Explain that.””

Claire looked toward Maya's bed.

Then she lowered her voice.

“You've always been so busy working that you never noticed what was happening to her. Richard did.””

I stepped closer.

“What exactly did he notice?””

She swallowed.

“He noticed she was changing. He noticed she needed help. He understood how important it was to fix things before she got older.””

I looked at her.

“You're describing a twelve-year-old girl as something that needed fixing.””

Claire's face hardened.

“You don't understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She looked away.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell me the truth.

Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded envelope.

She placed it on the table.

“Fine. If you want the truth, read this.””

I opened it.

Inside was a printed email exchange between Claire and Richard.

The first message was from Claire.

Marcus is leaving for Chicago next week. We need to complete Maya's second phase before he returns.

Richard had replied:

Are you certain he won't interfere?

Claire's answer was chilling.

He trusts me. He always signs whatever I put in front of him.

I looked up.

Claire was crying now.

But I couldn't find sympathy in myself.

I turned to the next page.

There was another message.

This one had been sent just four days earlier.

Once the final stage is complete, Marcus won't have a choice. He'll have to accept that Maya needed this.

I felt the room go cold.

“What final stage?””

Claire didn't answer.

I turned the page.

At the bottom was a scheduled appointment for the following week.

The description read:

*PERMANENT CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE — PARENTAL CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.*

I looked at Claire.

“What were you planning to do to our daughter?””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“It wasn't my idea.””

I stepped closer.

“Whose idea was it?””

Claire looked toward the door.

And before she could answer, my phone rang.

The caller was Karen.

Her voice was urgent.

“Mr. Bennett, we've just received additional information from the clinic. You need to hear this immediately.””

I stepped into the corridor.

“What happened?””

She took a breath.

“Richard Cole has informed investigators that the final procedure was not simply a medical treatment.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was it?””

Karen paused.

Then she said:

“He claims your wife agreed to have Maya undergo a cosmetic procedure, and the clinic was preparing to proceed without your consent.””

I looked through the glass at my daughter.

Twelve years old.

Recovering from emergency surgery.

Still holding her stuffed dinosaur.

And somewhere outside that hospital, two adults had been planning to alter her body without allowing her to understand what they were doing.

Then Karen added one final sentence.

“Mr. Bennett, there's another problem. Richard says Claire wasn't the person who first proposed the procedure.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who was?””

May you like

Her answer stopped me cold.

“According to his statement, the idea came from someone in your own family.””
