Chapter 7: The Paper My Daughter Was Forced to Sign

I didn't sleep that night.

Maya finally drifted off shortly after midnight, exhausted from surgery, medication, and the endless stream of questions from doctors and nurses.

I sat beside her bed, staring at the receipt from Hart Wellness.

Continue only after father is out of town.

Those six words kept circling through my mind.

Claire hadn't simply made decisions without me.

She had planned around my absence.

My business trips.

My meetings.

My schedule.

Every time I left town, she had another opportunity to take Maya somewhere I didn't know existed.

At 1:17 a.m., I called Daniel.

He answered groggily.

“Marcus? Is something wrong?””

“I need you to help me find out everything about Hart Wellness.””

“Right now?””

“Yes. And I need you to do something else. Find every document Claire has ever sent me about Maya's medical appointments.””

Daniel was silent for a moment.

“Okay. But what happened?””

I told him about the receipt.

When I finished, he cursed under his breath.

“That's not normal, Marcus.””

“I know.””

“Have you told the hospital?””

“They have copies of everything.””

“Good. Don't let Claire take Maya anywhere.””

“I won't.””

We spoke for another twenty minutes before hanging up.

At seven the next morning, a hospital safeguarding specialist named Karen returned.

She carried a folder and asked whether I could speak with her outside Maya's room.

“I've reviewed the information you provided,” she said.

“We've also contacted the appropriate child-protection professionals.””

I nodded.

“What happens now?””

“First, we need to understand the circumstances surrounding the private treatment program. Second, we need to establish whether Maya was exposed to any further medical risks.””

I showed her the receipt.

Karen examined it carefully.

“Did Maya tell you what happened at this appointment?””

“Only that someone asked her to sign a paper.””

Karen nodded.

“We'll arrange a specialist interview. It's important that she isn't repeatedly questioned by different people.””

“I understand.””

She closed the folder.

“There's something else. We contacted the school counselor. She has retained notes from several conversations with Maya.””

“What did they say?””

Karen hesitated.

“According to the counselor, Maya described being weighed and photographed at home. She also said her mother had threatened to cancel her birthday party if she didn't cooperate with the treatment program.””

I stared at her.

“Her birthday is next month.””

“I know.””

I looked through the glass at my daughter.

She was awake, watching cartoons.

A birthday party.

She was twelve years old.

She should have been choosing decorations and arguing with her friends about which cake to order.

Instead, she had been measuring her worth against a number on a scale.

Karen continued.

“We'd like to ask Maya about the document she mentioned, but only when she's comfortable.””

I agreed.

When we entered the room, Maya was drawing again.

Karen sat beside her.

“Hi, Maya. How's your tummy today?””

“Better.””

“That's good. Your dad told me you remembered a paper from the place your mom took you.””

Maya nodded.

“Do you remember what it looked like?””

“White. With lots of writing.””

“Did someone explain it to you?””

Maya shook her head.

“They said it was just a promise.””

“What kind of promise?””

Maya looked down at her blanket.

“That I would try harder.””

Karen waited.

Maya continued.

“They said if I signed it, I could have the treatment.””

I leaned forward.

“What treatment, sweetheart?””

“The one that would make me look better.””

Karen asked gently, “Did you want that treatment?””

Maya shook her head.

“Then why did you sign?””

Maya's voice became barely audible.

“Mom said everybody had already paid for it. She said I was making her look bad.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

Karen didn't interrupt.

“Did you read the paper?””

“No.””

“Did anyone tell you what it meant?””

Maya shook her head again.

Then she said something that made my stomach drop.

“They told me I couldn't tell Daddy because he might stop paying for it.””

Karen looked at me briefly.

I felt as though someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

My daughter believed she was responsible for protecting our finances.

She believed she had to cooperate because adults had already spent money on her.

And she believed telling me the truth would somehow make her the problem.

Karen thanked her and ended the conversation.

Afterward, she stepped outside with me.

“We'll request the original document and investigate the circumstances under which it was signed.””

“Can you get it today?””

“We'll make the request immediately.””

At 10:30 a.m., Daniel arrived.

He carried a laptop and a thick envelope.

“Marcus.””

I stood.

“What did you find?””

He glanced at Maya.

“Is she awake?””

I nodded toward the bed.

Daniel approached and smiled.

“Hey, princess.””

Maya smiled weakly.

“Uncle Daniel.””

He kissed the top of her head.

“I brought you something.””

He placed a small stuffed dinosaur beside her pillow.

“His name is Pickles. He's terrible at keeping secrets, so you'll have to watch him.””

Maya giggled.

For a moment, the room felt normal.

Then Daniel and I stepped into the corridor.

He opened his laptop.

“I found the clinic.””

“What about it?””

“Hart Wellness operated through a company called Hart Lifestyle Solutions. The business was registered to a woman named Evelyn Hart.””

“Is she a doctor?””

“Her qualifications are unclear. Some of the services advertised on the company's website involved nutritional coaching and cosmetic consultations. But I found several complaints about treatment programs being offered to minors.””

I looked at the screen.

“Complaints from parents?””

“Some. Others from former employees.””

He showed me a document.

One complaint described parents being encouraged to sign authorization forms for treatments they didn't fully understand.

Another mentioned aggressive marketing directed at teenage girls.

I felt sick.

“Has anyone reported them?””

“Apparently, yes. The business has been under scrutiny.””

He opened another file.

“And Marcus, I found something else.””

“What?””

“Claire made six payments to the company using the joint household credit card.””

I looked at the amounts.

The total was over eleven thousand dollars.

“Eleven thousand?””

Daniel nodded.

“Some payments were labeled as nutritional consultations. Others were listed as private treatment packages.””

I rubbed my face.

“Why didn't I see these?””

“You probably did. But the charges were buried among the household expenses.””

I remembered Claire handling the monthly statements.

She had always said she kept everything organized.

I trusted her.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“There's one more thing. I found a digital copy of a document from the clinic's online portal.””

“What document?””

“An authorization form.””

He turned the screen toward me.

The title read:

*MINOR PARTICIPANT CONSENT AND FAMILY ACKNOWLEDGMENT.*

Below it were two signatures.

Claire's.

And mine.

I stared at the second signature.

It was identical to the one on the hospital document.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Marcus, the electronic record says you signed it on a day when you were in Chicago.””

I looked at him.

“That's impossible.””

“I know.””

Then I noticed the timestamp.

The document had been signed at 11:43 p.m.

I had been asleep in a hotel room.

I had never opened the portal.

I had never authorized the treatment.

But there was something worse.

The document contained a paragraph granting the clinic permission to photograph Maya, record her measurements, and use her progress images for promotional and educational purposes.

I read the paragraph twice.

“Daniel, they were going to use pictures of my daughter?””

He nodded.

“That's what the document says.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Karen appeared.

We have received confirmation that the clinic has located Maya's original signed document. A representative is bringing it to the hospital.

I stared at the message.

Then another notification appeared.

This one was from Claire.

We need to talk before you make another mistake.

I didn't respond.

A minute later, she sent another message.

You don't know what Maya signed.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a number I didn't recognize.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke quickly.

“Mr. Bennett? My name is Evelyn Hart.””

I stood up.

“What do you want?””

“I need to explain what happened with your daughter.””

“Then explain.””

She hesitated.

“Your wife didn't tell you the entire truth about the program.””

I gripped the phone.

“What else did she do?””

There was a long silence.

Then Dr. Hart said:

“Mr. Bennett, your daughter wasn't originally enrolled for weight management. Claire requested something much more specific.””

My mouth went dry.

“What?””

“She wanted Maya entered into our accelerated appearance-correction program.””

May you like

And before I could ask what that meant, the woman added:

“Your wife told us that you had already approved the final stage.””
