Chapter 9: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the document.
My name appeared beneath a paragraph stating that I voluntarily surrendered all parental rights to Lily Carter.
There was a notary stamp.
A witness signature.
And a date from three weeks earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You forged my signature.””
She tilted her head.
“Can you prove that?””
“I never signed anything.””
Helen smiled.
“That's unfortunate. Because the document has already been submitted.””
My heart pounded.
“Submitted where?””
“To family court.””
I looked at the paper again.
The signature looked convincing.
But something was wrong.
Sarah had taught me to sign my name with a small upward stroke at the end of the final letter.
This signature ended with a downward line.
It was close.
But it wasn't mine.
“You made this,” I said.
Vanessa shrugged.
“People sign things all the time without reading them.””
“Not me.””
“Then perhaps you should have been more careful with your paperwork.””
I glanced toward Lily.
She was standing beside Mason, holding his hand.
“Bring the children downstairs.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not until you give us the necklace.””
I held up the evidence bag.
“Take it.””
Helen stepped forward.
Vanessa immediately raised her hand.
“Wait.””
She looked at the necklace.
“Where's the memory card?””
I kept my expression neutral.
“What memory card?””
Her face hardened.
“The one inside the pendant.””
I realized then that they knew exactly what Sarah had hidden.
And they weren't interested in the key alone.
They wanted the information stored on the card.
I glanced toward the fireplace.
Number 214.
The safe deposit box.
“Give me the necklace,” Vanessa demanded.
I placed it on the coffee table.
She rushed forward and grabbed it.
Her fingers worked quickly around the pendant.
When she opened the hidden compartment, her face changed.
Empty.
She looked up.
“Where is it?””
I didn't answer.
Helen's calm expression disappeared.
“Michael, where is the card?””
“Somewhere safe.””
Vanessa laughed.
“You're bluffing.””
“Am I?””
She looked toward Lily.
Then she walked to the staircase and grabbed my daughter's arm.
“Stop!”” I shouted.
Lily cried out.
Mason immediately stepped between them.
“Leave her alone!””
Vanessa shoved him aside.
He stumbled against the wall.
I moved forward, but Helen blocked my path.
“Don't make this worse.””
I stared at her.
“You've already kidnapped two children. How much worse can it get?””
Helen leaned closer.
“Do you know why Sarah never gave you those documents?””
I said nothing.
“Because she knew you would try to play hero. She knew you'd get involved, and she didn't want you destroyed along with her.””
My jaw tightened.
“Then why did she leave them to Lily?””
Helen smiled.
“Because Sarah thought she could protect her daughter even after she was gone.””
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“Mother, enough.””
Helen turned.
“Don't tell me what to do.””
Something about the exchange caught my attention.
Vanessa was frightened of Helen.
Not merely nervous.
Terrified.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You've been working for her all this time.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Don't pretend you understand our relationship.””
“Did she make you marry me?””
Helen's face tightened.
Vanessa looked away.
That was enough.
I took a step closer.
“Did she?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“She said you were wealthy. She said you were vulnerable. She said Lily would eventually inherit everything.””
I felt sick.
“And you agreed?””
“I loved you!””
The words came out almost desperately.
I stared at her.
“You loved me?””
“I wanted a family.””
“You wanted my daughter's money.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“At first, I didn't know how much there was. I didn't know Sarah had left such a large trust.””
Helen slapped the table.
“Stop talking!””
Vanessa flinched.
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, I understood something.
Vanessa wasn't the mastermind.
She was a willing participant.
But she was also afraid of the woman standing beside her.
A loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone turned.
Mason had disappeared.
Vanessa rushed toward the staircase.
“Mason!””
I seized the opportunity.
I moved toward Lily.
But Helen grabbed my jacket.
“Stay where you are!””
I pulled away.
She stumbled backward.
Lily ran down three steps.
“Daddy!””
I caught her and held her against my chest.
Vanessa came charging down the stairs.
“Give her back!””
“No!””
Mason appeared behind her.
He held a small black device in his hand.
“Dad!””
I looked at him.
“What's that?””
“The camera!””
He held it up.
“Mom put another one in the upstairs hallway.””
Vanessa froze.
I looked at the device.
It was a small wireless camera.
Mason pressed a button.
A tiny red light blinked.
Then he turned it toward Helen.
“Grandma, do you remember what you said about Sarah?””
Helen's expression changed.
“Give me that.””
Mason stepped backward.
“No.””
He pressed another button.
A recording began playing.
Helen's voice filled the room.
“If Sarah refuses to hand over the original files, we'll make sure nobody believes her.””
Vanessa stared at her mother.
The recording continued.
“And if something happens to her, the girl becomes our only problem.””
I felt Lily clutch my shirt.
Then Helen's voice came again.
“Vanessa, once Michael marries you, you'll have access to the trust. Keep the little girl quiet until the transfer is complete.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Vanessa looked at her mother.
“You told me we were only going to scare her.””
Helen's face turned cold.
“Shut up.””
“You said Sarah would be frightened into giving up the documents!””
“Vanessa!””
“You never told me she was going to die!””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa began shaking.
“I didn't know she would die.””
Helen took a step toward her.
“You stupid girl.””
Vanessa backed away.
For a moment, the two women looked like strangers.
Then Helen reached into her handbag.
Harris's voice suddenly came through the small radio clipped beneath my jacket.
“Michael, stay down. We're moving in.””
I looked toward the front windows.
Outside, officers were approaching the house.
Helen noticed my expression.
Her hand tightened around the handbag.
Vanessa screamed.
“Mother, don't!””
A second later, a gunshot shattered the room.
I dropped to the floor, shielding Lily with my body.
Mason screamed.
Glass exploded from the fireplace cabinet.
Then I heard Helen shouting.
“Get the documents!””
Officers stormed through the front entrance.
“Police! Drop the weapon!””
I looked up.
Helen was standing beside the coffee table, holding a small pistol.
Vanessa was on the floor, clutching her shoulder.
Mason had pulled Lily behind the staircase.
And Detective Harris was aiming his weapon directly at Helen.
“Put it down!””
Helen looked around the room.
For the first time, she appeared to understand that she had lost control.
She slowly lowered the gun.
Officers rushed forward and handcuffed her.
I ran toward Lily.
“Baby!””
She threw herself into my arms.
“Daddy, I was scared!””
“I know. It's over.””
But as I held her, Mason suddenly tugged at my sleeve.
“Dad.””
I turned.
He was holding something he had pulled from Vanessa's handbag.
A small photograph.
It showed Sarah standing beside a hospital bed.
And lying in that bed was a newborn baby.
I recognized the hospital.
I recognized the date.
But the baby wasn't Lily.
Mason looked at me.
“Dad, I think Mom and Grandma have been hiding something else about Lily's birth.””
I stared at the photograph.

On the back, Sarah had written a sentence that made my entire world collapse.
If Michael ever discovers the truth, tell him Lily was never supposed to come home with us.
