Chapter 14: The Officer Who Buried the Truth

Detective Harris didn't speak for several seconds.

Then he pulled out his phone and made another call.

“Find Officer Grant. I want his current location, vehicle registration, and every communication he's had with Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“Was he involved in Sarah's accident?””

“I don't know yet.””

“You just said he handled the original report.””

“Which means he had access to evidence. It doesn't automatically make him guilty.””

I pointed toward the photograph.

“David admitted he followed Sarah. Somebody buried that information. Somebody protected him.””

Harris nodded.

“And we're going to find out who.””

He turned toward the officers.

“Preserve the original accident file. Nobody accesses it without my authorization.””

At 8:15 p.m., we received a call from an officer at the county courthouse.

Vanessa had been spotted entering a records office.

She was accompanied by a man wearing a dark police uniform.

Harris immediately recognized the description.

“Grant.””

We drove to the courthouse.

The building was almost empty.

Most of the lights had been switched off.

Two officers entered through the front entrance while Harris and I went around the side.

A security guard met us near the records department.

“They went upstairs,” he whispered.

Harris showed his badge.

“Stay here.””

We climbed the staircase.

A door stood slightly open at the end of the hallway.

I heard Vanessa's voice.

“You promised me the file would be destroyed.””

A man's voice replied.

“I told you I'd remove the original. I never promised anything else.””

“Grant, if Michael finds out—”

“He already knows.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“Then we need to find the memory card.””

I looked at Harris.

He raised one finger.

We moved closer.

Inside, Officer Grant stood beside a filing cabinet.

Vanessa was holding a large envelope.

“Where's the safe deposit key?”” Grant asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Michael has it.””

“Then get it.””

“I can't. He's working with Harris.””

Grant grabbed her arm.

“You got yourself into this mess.””

Vanessa pulled away.

“Don't touch me!””

Harris stepped into the doorway.

“Officer Grant. Step away from her.””

Grant spun around.

His hand moved toward his belt.

“Detective Harris.””

“Hands where I can see them.””

Vanessa dropped the envelope.

Grant raised both hands.

“There's been a misunderstanding.””

“Then explain why you're accessing sealed evidence without authorization.””

Grant swallowed.

“I was following orders.””

“Whose orders?””

He looked toward Vanessa.

She stared at him.

Then she said:

“Don't you dare.””

Grant's expression changed.

“Her mother's.””

Harris immediately ordered him to turn around.

An officer entered and secured him.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside were copies of Sarah's accident report.

Several pages had been marked with red ink.

One sentence appeared repeatedly:

Vehicle damage inconsistent with single-car collision.

I looked at Harris.

“What does this mean?””

He examined the page.

“It means the original investigator suspected another vehicle was involved.””

“Why wasn't that included in the final report?””

Grant lowered his head.

“I was told to remove it.””

“By whom?””

He remained silent.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“You're wasting your time. Helen has already destroyed the evidence.””

I turned toward her.

“Where is Helen?””

She smiled.

“You'll never find her.””

Harris approached.

“Mrs. Carter, you're under arrest for escaping custody, kidnapping, and conspiracy.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

As officers placed handcuffs around her wrists, she looked at me.

“Michael, you really think you're saving Lily?””

I stared at her.

“You're never getting near my daughter again.””

She leaned closer.

“You don't understand what Sarah did.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Sarah knew Lily wasn't supposed to be with her. But she refused to let her go.””

I clenched my jaw.

“She loved Lily.””

“She stole her!””

“She raised her!””

Vanessa shook her head.

“And she knew that if Lily ever learned the truth, everything would fall apart.””

I looked at her.

“What truth?””

Vanessa glanced at Grant.

Then she whispered:

“Sarah didn't accidentally discover Helen's fraud. She was involved in it first.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

“Ask your detective what happened to the original financial ledger.””

Harris stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

But Vanessa continued.

“Sarah helped create those accounts. She signed the original transfers. Then she turned against Helen when she realized how much money was involved.””

I stared at the woman I had once loved.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

She looked directly at me.

“Why do you think Sarah was so desperate to hide Lily's identity?””

I had no answer.

At the station, Grant finally agreed to talk.

He sat across from Harris in an interrogation room.

“I didn't know David was going to cause a crash,” he said.

Harris leaned forward.

“Then what did you know?””

“David told me he was following Sarah to retrieve stolen documents.””

“Who authorized you to alter the report?””

Grant hesitated.

“Helen.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She was present when we discussed the accident.””

I felt sick.

“What about the call David made to Michael afterward?””

Grant looked at me.

“I didn't know about that.””

“Did you see David at the scene?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

Grant looked down.

“Because Helen had evidence against me.””

“What evidence?””

He closed his eyes.

“I had taken money from the company.””

The room went silent.

Grant explained that Helen had been paying him for years to remove documents, alter reports, and keep certain investigations from progressing.

But he insisted he had never intended for Sarah to die.

“Where is the original accident evidence?”” Harris asked.

Grant swallowed.

“Storage room at the old police annex.””

“Who has access?””

“Only three people.””

“Names.””

Grant looked at Harris.

Then he said:

“Me. David. And your deputy chief.””

Harris froze.

“Deputy Chief Robert Lawson?””

Grant nodded.

I looked at Harris.

“Your own superior?””

He didn't answer.

Then Grant added:

“There's something else. The deputy chief has been protecting Helen for longer than any of us.””

Harris slowly stood.

“Why?””

Grant looked at me.

“Because he was the one who arranged Sarah's hospital adoption.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Hospital adoption?””

Grant nodded.

“He signed the authorization that allowed Lily to be transferred from Claire's file to Sarah's.””

I stared at him.

“Why would he do that?””

Grant leaned forward.

“Because Claire's baby wasn't the only child involved in that arrangement.””

The room fell silent.

“What do you mean?””

Grant looked toward the observation window.

May you like

Then he said:

“There were two babies born that night. And one of them disappeared.””
