Chapter 6: The Father-in-Law's Confession
Detective Bennett signaled for me to move away from the entrance.
Two officers positioned themselves behind the living room wall.
Richard knocked again.
"Michael! I know you're in there.""
I stared at the door.
My father had been dead for twenty-three years, and Richard had apparently spent every one of those years keeping secrets about him.
Now he was standing outside the house as if he owned it.
Detective Bennett approached the entrance.
"Police. Step away from the door.""
Richard laughed.
"Detective, I don't know what you're doing here, but this is private property.""
"We have a witness statement and evidence connecting this location to an ongoing investigation.""
"From whom?""
"That's not your concern.""
There was a pause.
Then Richard spoke directly to me.
"Michael, your mother has lied to you.""
I stepped forward.
Detective Bennett caught my shoulder.
"Don't.""
Richard continued.
"She has been hiding the truth about your father since the night he died.""
My jaw tightened.
"Why don't you come inside and tell me what you know?""
Bennett shook her head.
But I wasn't finished.
"Unless you're afraid.""
Silence.
Then Richard said, "Open the door.""
Detective Bennett positioned herself beside the entrance.
One of the officers unlocked it.
Richard stood outside wearing an expensive charcoal suit.
His silver hair was perfectly arranged.
Behind him stood two men.
One was unfamiliar.
The other was Andrew.
His cheek was bruised, and his wrists were cuffed.
Richard's eyes moved around the room.
When he noticed the cassette recorder, his expression changed.
"Where did you find that?""
I stepped forward.
"My father's house.""
Richard looked at me.
"Your father left you a lot of things you don't understand.""
"Then explain them.""
He sighed.
"Michael, you've always been an intelligent young man. Don't let Evelyn confuse you.""
"She told me you threatened my father.""
Richard gave a small, humorless laugh.
"Your father was unstable.""
"Was he?""
"He made reckless business decisions. He became obsessed with money that didn't belong to him.""
I held up the photograph of Nia.
Richard went pale.
"Where did you get that?""
"Why is your daughter in a photograph with my father?""
He looked at it.
Then he slowly lowered his eyes.
"Put that away.""
"Who raised Nia?""
Richard didn't answer.
I took another step.
"Who are her biological parents?""
He looked at Detective Bennett.
"Are you allowing this?""
Bennett crossed her arms.
"Answer the question.""
Richard's face tightened.
"Her mother died when she was young.""
"Who was her mother?""
"That's irrelevant.""
"Was it Evelyn?""
He stared at me.
Then he laughed.
It was the worst sound I'd heard all evening.
"No, Michael. Evelyn was never Nia's mother.""
I looked down at the photograph.
"Then why was she with my father?""
Richard's eyes shifted toward the recorder.
"Because your father had a weakness for saving people.""
"What people?""
Richard didn't answer.
Andrew suddenly stepped forward.
"Mr. Whitmore, we should leave.""
Richard turned sharply.
"Shut up.""
Andrew swallowed.
Detective Bennett noticed.
"Mr. Andrew, you are already in custody. I suggest you start cooperating.""
Richard glared at him.
Andrew looked at me.
Then he said something that changed everything.
"Your father didn't die in that accident.""
Richard lunged toward him.
"Don't you dare.""
The officers immediately intervened.
Bennett raised her voice.
"Mr. Whitmore, step back!""
Andrew continued.
"I was there.""
My chest tightened.
"You were there when my father died?""
He nodded.
"I was twenty-two. I worked for Richard. I was driving the second vehicle.""
I couldn't speak.
Andrew looked at the floor.
"Your father's car was forced off the road.""
Richard shouted, "He's lying!""
Andrew shook his head.
"I saw it happen.""
Detective Bennett stepped between them.
"Who was driving the first vehicle?""
Andrew hesitated.
Then he looked directly at me.
"Richard.""
I felt the room spin.
My father hadn't simply died in an accident.
Someone had deliberately run him off the road.
And the man responsible had been eating dinner at my table, giving speeches at my wedding, and calling me son.
I looked at Richard.
"Did you kill my father?""
Richard's face hardened.
"Your father brought this on himself.""
The words came out so casually that I almost didn't understand them.
I stepped toward him.
"Say that again.""
"Your father was going to destroy everything.""
"So you killed him?""
Richard shook his head.
"I didn't kill anyone.""
Andrew laughed bitterly.
"You told me to follow him.""
"Be quiet!""
"You said we only needed to scare him.""
Richard turned toward the officers.
"He's trying to save himself.""
Andrew looked at me.
"There's more. Your mother was in the passenger seat.""
I froze.
"She told me she was in the car.""
Andrew nodded.
"She survived because your father turned the steering wheel at the last second. He pushed the car toward the ditch, away from the road barrier.""
I closed my eyes.
My mother had watched my father die.
And she had carried that memory alone for twenty-three years.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
Andrew looked ashamed.
"Because Richard threatened to have you taken away.""
I turned toward Richard.
He straightened his jacket.
"Your mother was emotionally unstable. I told her the authorities would question her about the money. I told her she'd lose custody if she kept making accusations.""
I stared at him.
"You used me to silence her.""
"I protected you.""
"You destroyed my family.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Your family was destroyed long before I came along.""
Detective Bennett stepped closer.
"Mr. Whitmore, I think you've said enough.""
But Richard suddenly smiled.
It was a small smile.
A confident one.
"Have I?""
He looked at me.
"Michael, there's something else you should know about your marriage.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What?""
"Nia didn't marry you because of your money.""
I almost laughed.
"She married me because of my father's money?""
Richard shook his head.
"No.""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"She married you because of what your father did before you were born.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The woman beside my father.
The date.
The handwritten note.
"Who is Nia?""
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, he looked almost sorry.
"Your father had a daughter before he met Evelyn.""
I couldn't move.
"What?""
Richard nodded toward the photograph.
"That woman was her mother.""
I stared at him.
"You're saying Nia is my sister?""
Richard shook his head.
"No, Michael. I'm saying your father had another child.""
He paused.
"And the woman who gave birth to her was the reason he married your mother.""
My mind raced.
"Then who is Nia?""
Richard looked toward the door.
"She's the daughter I raised.""
I swallowed.
"That doesn't answer my question.""
Richard's eyes returned to mine.
"Your wife is not my biological daughter.""
The room went silent.
Then he delivered the sentence that made my blood run cold.
"She's Evelyn's daughter.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Richard nodded.
"Your mother gave birth to Nia twenty-eight years ago. Before you were born.""
I looked at the photograph again.
My mother.
Nia.
My father.
A past I had never known existed.
Detective Bennett slowly turned toward Richard.
"Are you saying Michael's mother concealed another child?""
Richard smiled.
"Ask Evelyn.""
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from the hospital.
It was from an unknown number.
Michael, your mother is awake. But she's asking for you.
Another message followed.
She says there's something you must know about Nia before you speak to Richard again.
Then the final message arrived.
And she says Nia isn't the only child she gave away.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
I had spent twenty-eight years believing I was my mother's only child.
Now I was beginning to wonder how many people in my family I had never known existed.
