Chapter 13: The Photograph That Destroyed Everything
I stared at the photograph until the words on my phone became blurry.
My father stood beside Richard Whitmore.
Both men were smiling.
Not politely.
Not awkwardly.
They looked like old friends celebrating a successful business deal.
The date was yesterday.
I enlarged the image.
My father was wearing a dark blue suit. His hair was neatly combed, and he stood without a wheelchair or walking assistance.
He looked healthier than I had seen him in the storage building.
Much healthier.
I looked at Detective Bennett.
"Where did this come from?""
She examined the image.
"Your wife sent it?""
I nodded.
"Can you determine when it was taken?""
"We'll have someone examine the original file.""
I shook my head.
"That man was in a wheelchair an hour ago.""
Bennett didn't respond.
I called Nia.
She answered immediately.
"Michael.""
"Tell me the photograph is fake.""
She was quiet.
"Where are you?""
"Don't change the subject.""
"Michael, please. You need to listen to me.""
"Is my father working with Richard?""
She exhaled.
"Yes.""
The answer hit harder than I expected.
I sat down.
"Why?""
"Because he always has been.""
I closed my eyes.
"What are you talking about?""
Nia began speaking quickly.
"Your father didn't disappear because Richard forced him to. They planned the disappearance together.""
I looked at Bennett.
She signaled for me to put the phone on speaker.
Nia continued.
"Twenty-three years ago, your father discovered that the money Richard was moving belonged to hundreds of investors. He wanted to expose him, but he also wanted to keep control of the accounts.""
"That's what he told me.""
"No. He told you the version that made him look innocent.""
I gripped the phone.
"Then tell me the truth.""
"Your father arranged the crash.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
"He knew Richard would follow him. He deliberately drove off the road. He needed everyone to believe he was dead so he could disappear with the original financial records.""
I looked at Bennett.
She had gone completely still.
"You're saying my father faked his death?""
"Yes.""
"Was Mom involved?""
Nia hesitated.
"Your mother discovered the plan afterward. She thought your father had died. When she found out he was alive, he threatened to expose her involvement in the original trust.""
I felt sick.
"Why would she help him?""
"Because she had signed documents for him. She believed the money was going to be returned to the families. She didn't understand what he was planning.""
I remembered the letters.
The hospital.
The years my father had watched me grow up.
"Why didn't he come home?""
"Because he didn't want to.""
Her answer was immediate.
I stared at the photograph again.
"Did he ever intend to return?""
"No.""
I felt something break inside me.
"Then why did he send those letters?""
"To make you believe he was still your father.""
I couldn't speak.
Nia's voice softened.
"Michael, I know you loved him. But he used everyone. Your mother.
Grace. Daniel. Me.""
"Why did you marry me?""
"Because Richard told me that marrying you would give me access to the trust. He said the money could finally be returned.""
"And you believed him?""
"At first.""
"What changed?""
She began crying.
"Because I found out what your father was planning.""
I closed my eyes.
"What?""
"He's going to dissolve the trust and transfer the remaining assets into private accounts. The families will lose everything.""
"How much?""
"More than eighty million dollars.""
I looked at Detective Bennett.
She wrote something on her notepad.
"Where is my father now?""
"At the Whitmore estate.""
"Is my mother there?""
"Yes.""
"Are you there?""
A pause.
Then Nia whispered, "I'm outside.""
"Why?""
"Because I stole something from Richard.""
"What?""
"The original trust ledger.""
I stood.
"Where are you?""
She gave me an address.
Detective Bennett immediately signaled for officers to prepare.
"Don't move," I told Nia.
"We're coming.""
"Michael, there's something else.""
"What?""
She lowered her voice.
"Your father knows you're coming.""
"How?""
"Because Daniel is working for him too.""
I felt my blood turn cold.
"Daniel works for Richard.""
"That's what everyone thinks.""
I stared at the phone.
"What do you mean?""
"Daniel has been protecting your father since the beginning.""
My mind raced.
The forged documents.
The hospital records.
The shooting.
The betrayal.
Nothing made sense anymore.
"Why would Daniel tell me he was Richard's son?""
"Because he is Richard's son. But he was raised to believe your father was the man who destroyed his family.""
I swallowed.
"And now?""
"Now he knows the truth.""
Before I could ask anything else, the call ended.
Detective Bennett immediately ordered the officers to move.
We found Nia outside an abandoned office building near the river.
She was standing beside a black sedan, holding a thick brown folder.
When she saw me, she started crying.
I stopped several feet away.
"Why did you do it?""
She looked at me.
"Because I was raised by a man who taught me that love was something you earned by obeying him.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"I know.""
She looked down at her wedding ring.
"I was supposed to marry you, get control of the trust, and transfer the money. Richard promised that once everything was finished, he'd give me a new identity and enough money to disappear.""
I stared at her.
"And you agreed.""
"Yes.""
"Did you ever love me?""
She looked up.
For the first time since the wedding, I believed her tears.
"Yes.""
I laughed bitterly.
"How am I supposed to believe that?""
"Because I didn't have to warn you. I could have left with the money. I could have let Richard finish what he started.""
She handed me the folder.
Inside were hundreds of pages of financial records.
At the top was a handwritten note.
Original trust beneficiaries. Complete list.
I flipped through the pages.
Names.
Addresses.
Bank accounts.
Amounts.
Families who had trusted my father and Richard with their savings.
Nia pointed to the last page.
"Your father has already prepared the transfer.""
I looked at the signature.
It was my father's.
But something else caught my attention.
The signature date was yesterday.
And the witness signature belonged to Daniel.
I looked at Nia.
"Where's Daniel?""
She swallowed.
"At the estate.""
"With Richard?""
"No.""
She looked toward the dark river.
"With your father.""
Detective Bennett took the folder.
"Then we're going to the estate.""
Nia caught my wrist.
"Michael, don't make the same mistake I did.""
"What mistake?""
"Thinking your father is the person you need to save.""
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
"He's the person you need to stop.""
