Chapter 13: The Man Who Came Back To Silence Us
For a moment, nobody moved.
It was as if time itself had stopped.
Eric stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like he hadn’t just walked into our home after years of secrets, lies, and unanswered questions.
He looked older than the man in the video.
His hair was graying.
His face had more lines.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
Cold.
Confident.
The eyes of someone who believed he could control every situation.
My father slowly stood.
“Get out.””
Eric smiled.
“Daniel.””
The way he said my father’s name made my skin crawl.
Not with anger.
With familiarity.
Like they were still friends.
Like nothing had happened.
“You have no idea how many times I imagined this moment,” Eric said.
My father stepped forward.
“You were there.””
Eric tilted his head.
“Where?””
“You know exactly where.””
Mia grabbed my hand.
It was the first time we had reached for each other without thinking.
Without hesitation.
Without rivalry.
We were both afraid.
But we were afraid together.
Eric noticed.
Interesting.
The way he looked at us wasn’t threatening.
It was worse.
It was calculating.
“So this is what happened,” he said quietly.
“What?””
He looked between us.
“The truth finally brought you together.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about my family.””
Eric laughed softly.
“Your family?””
He looked around the room.
“That’s funny.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to say anything.””
Eric walked farther inside.
My father immediately moved in front of us.
“Stop right there.””
Eric raised his hands.
“Relax.””
“Relax?””
My father’s voice shook.
“You destroyed everything.””
Eric’s smile disappeared.
“No.””
The room became silent.
“I made choices.””
My stomach turned.
People who hurt others always had a way of making themselves sound reasonable.
“You ruined my marriage,” my father said.
Eric looked at him.
“Your marriage was already broken.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“You wanted what I had.””
Eric’s expression changed slightly.
A small crack.
A sign that maybe my father had hit the truth.
“You had everything,” Eric whispered.
My father stared at him.
“And you couldn’t stand it.””
For years, I had wondered why people became cruel.
Why Mia hurt me.
Why Rachel destroyed things.
Why Eric betrayed someone who trusted him.
But standing there, I realized something.
Some people didn’t destroy things because they hated them.
They destroyed them because they wanted to own them.
Eric looked at the flash drive on the table.
“You shouldn’t have watched that.””
Mia stepped forward.
“Why?””
Eric looked at her.
“Because now you know.””
“Know what?””
His face became serious.
“That your perfect memories aren’t real.””
Mia frowned.
“My memories?””
“Yes.””
He looked around.
“Your father spent years pretending he was protecting you.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Enough.””
But Eric continued.
“Did he tell you everything?””
I looked at my father.
A terrible feeling returned.
“What does that mean?””
Eric smiled.
“There it is.””
He pointed at my father.
“Still keeping secrets.””
My father looked furious.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Eric laughed.
“You always did that.””
“Did what?””
“Control the story.””
The accusation hit the room.
Because part of it was true.
My father had hidden things.
Not because he wanted to hurt us.
Because he was afraid.
But secrets still had consequences.
Mia looked at my father.
“Is there more?””
My father didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“Dad.””
He looked at us.
“I didn’t want you to carry this.””
Mia shook her head.
“We already carried it.””
The words hurt him.
Because they were true.
My father closed his eyes.
Then Eric spoke.
“Ask him about the hospital.””
My blood ran cold.
“What hospital?””
My father’s face changed.
“Eric.””
“What?””
Eric smiled.
“They deserve the truth.””
My father looked defeated.
And finally, he said the words.
“Your mother survived the accident.””
Nobody breathed.
“What?””
Mia’s voice was barely audible.
My father looked at us with tears in his eyes.
“She was alive when they took her to the hospital.””
The room spun.
I grabbed the table.
“No.””
“Yes.””
My father swallowed.
“She survived for several hours.””
I couldn’t understand.
“Then why…”
His voice broke.
“Because she lost too much blood.””
Silence.
The truth was painful.
But it wasn’t the truth Eric wanted us to believe.
My father continued.
“I was there.””
Mia looked at him.
“Did Mom say anything?””
He nodded.
“One thing.””
“What?””
He looked at her.
“She asked me to protect you.””
Mia started crying.
My father turned toward me.
“And she asked me to tell you that she loved you.””
I covered my face.
All these years.
I thought my mother had left without saying goodbye.
But she hadn’t.
She had tried.
Then Eric interrupted.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at him.
His expression had changed.
Because this part wasn’t going the way he wanted.
My father looked at him.
“You’re done.””
Eric’s face hardened.
“No.””
He stepped back.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“I wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.””
He looked directly at me.
“Your father knows why your mother was really afraid.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Eric smiled.
“Ask him about the letter she left.””
My father froze.
The room went silent.
The letter.
The letter from my mother.
The one we had found.
The one my father said he should have given me years ago.
I looked at him.
“What is he talking about?””
My father looked broken.
And in that moment…
May you like
I knew.
There was still one final secret.
