Chapter 13: The Debt That Belonged to Sarah
I didn't speak for several seconds.
Robert's words kept repeating in my head.
Sarah Porter.
The second borrower.
I looked at David, who stood beside Michael's desk with his shoulders hunched and his face drained of color.
"Did you know?"" I whispered.
He shook his head.
"Mom, I swear I didn't.""
I turned away from him and pressed the phone against my ear.
"Robert, explain exactly what you found.""
"The examiner compared the alleged security agreement with the original electronic records. The document appears to have been assembled from different versions. Michael's signature was copied from an unrelated document. The borrower information was changed, too.""
"Changed from what?""
"An earlier version lists both David and Sarah as borrowers. The later version lists David alone, with Michael supposedly guaranteeing the loan.""
I closed my eyes.
"So Sarah was responsible for the original debt?""
"That's what the records suggest. We don't yet know why the paperwork was changed.""
I looked at David.
"Did you ever borrow money with Sarah?""
He shook his head again.
"Not that I knew of.""
Robert continued.
"There's another issue. The company that transferred the money appears to have been controlled by an entity connected to Sarah's former employer. The records are incomplete, but the transaction trail is suspicious.""
"Can you prove it?""
"We're working on that. I've also notified the lender that the property authorization is disputed and that the documents submitted in your name may be fraudulent.""
I took a breath.
"What about the missing USB drive?""
"Did someone take it?""
I looked at David.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
"Sarah.""
Robert went quiet.
"Then we need to preserve every remaining record. Don't confront her alone. And don't accept any document or proposal she brings you.""
"I understand.""
After the call, I placed my phone on the desk.
David stared at the floor.
"Mom, I didn't know she was involved in the loan like that.""
"You knew she had been involved with Thomas.""
"She said she was helping him with paperwork. She told me she understood how private lending worked.""
"And you never asked why she was helping a man who was collecting money from you?""
David rubbed his face.
"I trusted her.""
I looked at him.
"You trusted her enough to let her search your father's office.""
He swallowed.
"Yes.""
"Enough to help her obtain my property documents.""
He didn't answer.
"Enough to tell her where I kept the house records.""
"Mom, I thought we were going to get through this together.""
I stared at him.
"Together? You and Sarah made plans about my bedroom, my house, and my money without asking me. You didn't invite me into a plan, David. You made me the solution to a problem you were hiding.""
He sat down.
For the first time, he looked less like an angry adult son and more like the little boy who used to come downstairs after a nightmare.
But I couldn't let that memory decide what happened next.
"What did Sarah tell you about the money?""
David took a long breath.
"She said she had worked with Thomas on a property investment. She told me there was a temporary cash-flow problem, and she needed someone to sign as a second borrower.""
"Did you sign?""
He shook his head.
"She said it was handled through the company.""
"Then how did your name get involved?""
"I borrowed money from Thomas separately. He said the paperwork would be consolidated later.""
I felt sick.
"So you borrowed ninety thousand, and Sarah had another loan connected to the same company?""
"Yes.""
"And now Thomas is demanding one hundred and forty thousand from you?""
David nodded.
I pulled out a chair.
"How much did Sarah receive?""
"I don't know.""
"David, I need an honest answer.""
He looked at me.
"She told me it was about sixty thousand.""
"Where did it go?""
"She said it paid off the company's expenses.""
I looked at the empty compartment.
"Then why would she take the USB drive?""
He stared at it.
"Because it probably shows where the money went.""
I called Robert again and told him what David had said.
He instructed us not to touch any remaining documents and arranged to meet us at the house.
While we waited, David finally told me something he had never admitted before.
"Sarah said Thomas had been threatening her for months.""
"Why?""
"Because she couldn't repay the money.""
"Then why did she tell you the debt was yours?""
"She said if I didn't help, Thomas would expose her. She said he could ruin both of us.""
I looked at him.
"And you believed her?""
"I wanted to believe there was a way out.""
I sat quietly.
Then I asked, "When did you start planning to use my house?""
He lowered his head.
"Before we moved in.""
"How long before?""
"About three months.""
I looked at the door.
Three months.
Three months of phone calls, emails, and private arrangements.
Three months in which my son and his wife had been discussing how to make me surrender something I had spent twenty years building.
Robert arrived at noon with another attorney from his office.
He reviewed the documents, photographed the remaining pages, and asked David to write down everything he remembered about the loan.
Then he asked a question that made David go pale.
"Did you ever give Sarah access to your father's signature?""
David stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because the disputed signature appears to have been copied from an earlier document. We need to know who could have accessed it.""
David swallowed.
"She had access to Dad's old files.""
"Did she have access to his computer?""
"Yes.""
"Did she have access to his email?""
David nodded.
Robert made a note.
Then he looked at me.
"Kimberly, I recommend changing the access codes for every account and device connected to the property. We should also arrange for a locksmith to secure the office and the filing cabinets.""
I agreed.
Before Robert left, I asked him whether Thomas could still force me to pay.
"Not based on what we've seen," he said.
"But we need to finish the investigation. You are not responsible for a debt simply because someone lists your property in a document.""
After he left, I went upstairs.
Sarah's belongings were still in the guest room.
Her clothes hung in the closet. Her shoes lined the wall. Her cosmetics covered the bathroom counter.
I had given her space because she was family.
She had mistaken that kindness for permission.
I began packing her things into boxes.
David appeared in the doorway.
"Mom, what are you doing?""
"Preparing your belongings.""
"You're kicking us out?""
I kept folding a sweater.
"You have until tomorrow evening to arrange somewhere else to stay.""
He stared at me.
"Mom, we're in the middle of a crisis.""
"So am I.""
"Where are we supposed to go?""
I looked at him.
"You are both adults. You'll find somewhere.""
He stepped into the room.
"Please don't do this.""
I stopped packing.
"David, I didn't create this situation. I didn't borrow the money. I didn't alter the documents.
I didn't steal the USB drive. And I didn't plan to take over someone else's bedroom.""
He looked down.
"I know.""
"Then don't ask me to keep living with the consequences of your choices.""
He walked away without another word.
That evening, my phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then a message appeared.
*You have something that belongs to me. Tell Robert to stop investigating.*
I stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
*The USB drive is only part of the story. Michael left something else, and Sarah knows where it is.*
I called Robert immediately.
He told me not to respond.
But before I could put the phone down, another message appeared.
*Ask your son what happened on September 8 after the restaurant meeting. He was there when Michael made his final decision.*
I looked toward the living room.
David was sitting alone on the sofa.
I walked downstairs and held out my phone.
"Who sent this?""
He read the messages.
His expression changed.
"Mom, don't listen to them.""
"Who is it?""
"I don't know.""
"Then tell me what happened on September 8.""
He looked at me.
For a long moment, he didn't speak.
Then he whispered, "Dad told me he was going to report Thomas.""
"Why?""
"Because he found out the loan records had been altered.""
"And what did you do?""
David's eyes filled with tears.
"I begged him not to.""
"Why?""
"Because Sarah told me if he reported Thomas, the company would come after us.""
I stared at him.
"What did your father say?""
David's voice broke.
"He said he would rather lose every dollar he had than let someone take something from you.""
I felt my throat tighten.
Then David added something I hadn't expected.
"He also said he had already given the original evidence to someone he trusted.""
"Who?""
David looked toward the front window.
"I don't know. But he said if anything happened to him, that person would know what to do.""
My phone buzzed again.
This time, the message included a name.
*Richard Coleman.*
May you like
And beneath it:
*He has the original.*
