Chapter 12: The Woman in the Photograph

I took the photograph to Robert's office that afternoon.

He examined it carefully.

"Do you recognize the woman?""

"No.""

"Have you asked David?""

"Not yet.""

Robert turned the photograph over.

He read Michael's handwriting.

Then he looked at me.

"Your husband seems to have anticipated this situation.""

I nodded.

"That's what frightens me.""

I placed the USB drive on his desk.

"I found this in the hidden compartment.""

Robert didn't touch it immediately.

"Do you know what's on it?""

"No.""

"Then we'll have it examined properly.""

He placed it in an evidence envelope.

I handed him the handwritten note.

He read it twice.

"Did Michael mention this woman anywhere else?""

"Not that I've found.""

Robert studied the photograph again.

"Let's establish the date. September 8. You said Michael was receiving treatment then?""

"Yes.""

"Was he well enough to attend a restaurant meeting?""

I shook my head.

"Not according to what I remember.""

Robert wrote something down.

"That may be important.""

When I left his office, I drove to Patricia's house.

She opened the door wearing gardening gloves.

"Kim? What's wrong?""

"I need your help identifying someone.""

She led me into the kitchen.

I placed the photograph on the table.

Patricia leaned forward.

"That's Michael.""

"Yes.""

"And David.""

"Yes.""

She pointed to Thomas.

"Who's that?""

"Thomas Reed.""

She looked at the woman standing beside Sarah.

"Who's she?""

"That's what I'm trying to find out.""

Patricia picked up the photograph.

She examined the woman's face.

Then she frowned.

"Wait.""

"What?""

"I've seen her.""

I leaned forward.

"Where?""

Patricia closed her eyes, trying to remember.

"At Michael's memorial service.""

My heart skipped.

"You're sure?""

"I think so. She was standing near Richard. I assumed she was someone from the company.""

"Did you speak to her?""

"No. But I remember she asked whether the house had been sold.""

I stared at Patricia.

"What?""

She nodded.

"She asked me if you were planning to move.""

"Why would she ask that?""

"I thought she was just making conversation.""

I sat back.

Patricia studied the photograph again.

"Kim, I think I remember her name.""

"What is it?""

"Laura Bennett.""

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

"Who is she?""

Patricia shook her head.

"I don't know. But I remember the name because she introduced herself as someone who had worked with Michael.""

I took out my phone.

I called Richard.

He answered immediately.

"Kimberly?""

"Do you know a woman named Laura Bennett?""

There was a pause.

"Yes.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Who is she?""

"She was a bookkeeper who worked with Thomas Reed.""

"Was she involved in David's loan?""

"She handled some of the paperwork.""

"Do you know why she was at the restaurant with Michael and David?""

Richard exhaled.

"Michael asked her to attend a meeting.""

"Why?""

"Because he believed she had information about the original loan agreement.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Did she give him anything?""

"I don't know. But Michael said he was going to meet with her.""

"Where is she now?""

"She moved out of state, I believe. I haven't spoken to her in more than a year.""

I thanked him.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.

"Richard, did Michael ever tell you what he discovered?""

He was quiet.

Finally, he said, "He believed someone had altered the original loan records.""

I felt a chill.

"Who?""

"Michael never gave me a name.""

I ended the call.

Patricia poured me a glass of water.

"Kim, this is getting bigger than a bedroom argument.""

I laughed weakly.

"Tell me about it.""

That evening, I returned home and found Sarah in the living room.

She was on the phone.

"No, she doesn't know about Laura.""

I stopped in the doorway.

Sarah turned.

Her face went white.

"Call you back.""

She ended the call.

I slowly set down my handbag.

"Who doesn't know about Laura?""

She picked up her laptop.

"I was discussing work.""

"With whom?""

"That's none of your business.""

I looked at her.

"Is Laura Bennett your coworker?""

Sarah froze.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she said, "Why are you asking?""

I held up the photograph.

"Because I found this.""

She stared at it.

Her expression changed so quickly that I almost missed it.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your father-in-law kept it.""

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

She reached for the photograph.

I pulled it away.

"Don't.""

She looked toward the stairs.

Then back at me.

"Kimberly, you need to stop looking through Michael's things.""

"Why?""

"Because some of those documents don't concern you.""

I almost laughed.

"My husband's documents don't concern me?""

"Not when they involve private business arrangements.""

I stepped closer.

"Who is Laura Bennett?""

Sarah pressed her lips together.

"I don't know.""

"You're sure?""

"Yes.""

I held her gaze.

"Then why did you just say I didn't know about her?""

She didn't answer.

David came downstairs.

He looked between us.

"What's happening?""

I held up the photograph.

"Ask your wife.""

Sarah grabbed her handbag.

"I'm going out.""

David stepped in front of her.

"Sarah, wait.""

She pushed past him.

The front door slammed.

David turned toward me.

"Mom, what did you say to her?""

I looked at him.

"Who is Laura Bennett?""

He stopped.

His eyes moved to the photograph.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your father's desk.""

He rubbed his face.

"Mom, please.""

"David, I want the truth.""

He sat down heavily.

"Laura was Thomas's bookkeeper.""

"Why was she with your father?""

"Because Dad wanted to know where the money went.""

"What money?""

"The loan money.""

I pulled out a chair.

"Explain.""

David looked toward the front door.

Then he spoke.

"When I borrowed the ninety thousand, Thomas said the money was coming from a private investment fund. But Dad discovered that part of it had been transferred through another company.""

"Whose company?""

"I don't know.""

"David.""

He sighed.

"Sarah's former employer.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"She used to work for a company that handled private investments. Laura worked there too.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How did Sarah know Thomas?""

"They met through work.""

"And you?""

"She introduced us.""

I sat very still.

The pieces were falling into place.

"Did Sarah know about the debt before you married her?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did she know about the original agreement?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know your father disputed it?""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

I took a slow breath.

"Then why did she marry you?""

His head snapped up.

"Mom!""

"I'm asking a question.""

He looked genuinely hurt.

"She loves me.""

I studied his face.

"Then why has she spent months trying to use my house to solve a debt that existed before you married her?""

David had no answer.

I stood.

"Did you know she had the document?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know she was looking for something in your father's office?""

He hesitated.

"She said Dad had left records that could help us.""

I shook my head.

"David, did you ever see her take anything from that office?""

He looked away.

Then he whispered, "Yes.""

My heart began pounding.

"What did she take?""

"I don't know.""

"Try again.""

He closed his eyes.

"An envelope. A few weeks before we moved in.""

I stared at him.

"Which envelope?""

"I didn't see the name.""

"Where did she put it?""

"Her handbag.""

I walked toward the stairs.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

He stood.

"Because I thought it was related to the loan.""

I turned.

"Did you know she was planning to come here and search for more documents?""

He didn't answer.

I returned to the office and opened the hidden compartment.

The USB drive was gone.

I stared at the empty space.

I had left it on Robert's desk.

But the second envelope—the one containing Michael's handwritten note—was still there.

I turned around.

David stood in the doorway.

"Mom?""

I looked at him.

"Did Sarah come into this office today?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Are you sure?""

He hesitated.

Then he said, "I was in the shower earlier.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"David, where is the USB drive?""

His face changed.

"What USB drive?""

"The one I found in the hidden compartment.""

He looked at the empty space.

Then he whispered, "Oh, no.""

I grabbed my phone.

"Robert needs to know.""

David stepped forward.

"Mom, wait.""

"Move.""

"Please. You don't understand.""

I turned toward him.

"Then explain.""

He looked terrified.

"Sarah didn't just take the drive. She told me what's on it.""

I stopped.

"What is on it?""

He swallowed.

"Evidence that the original loan wasn't actually made to me.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

His voice broke.

"Mom, the money was transferred to a company connected to Sarah.""

For a moment, the room seemed completely silent.

Then David said the words that changed everything.

"She told me Thomas was using my name to cover what they had done.""

I looked at my son.

"Who is they?""

He lowered his head.

"Sarah and Thomas.""

I felt a chill move through me.

The woman who had demanded my bedroom.

The woman who had insisted I mortgage my house.

The woman who had searched my husband's office.

She might not have been trying to save David from his debt at all.

She might have been trying to keep him from discovering who had actually received the money.

And somewhere in the middle of all this was a missing USB drive containing the evidence.

My phone rang.

Robert.

I answered immediately.

"Kimberly, I need you to listen carefully. The document examiner has completed the first stage of the review.""

"What did they find?""

His voice was grave.

"The agreement supposedly signed by Michael contains a signature reproduced from a completely different document. But that's not the most important discovery.""

I gripped the phone.

"What is?""

"We found evidence that the original agreement was altered after it was signed.""

I looked at David.

He had gone completely pale.

Robert continued.

"And Kimberly, there's another name on the original file.""

"Whose?""

He paused.

Then he said:

"Your son, David Porter, wasn't the only person listed as a borrower.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Who was the other borrower?""

Robert took a breath.

"Sarah Porter.""

I looked at David.

His face crumpled.

And suddenly, I understood why Sarah had been so desperate to get inside my house.

May you like

She wasn't simply protecting her husband.

She was protecting herself.
