Calm

Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back Begging for Forgiveness

When I opened the door that evening and saw Bianca standing beside Alexander, my first thought was not anger.

It was confusion.

Because after everything that had happened, after the documents, the lies, the hidden accounts, and the painful truths that had finally come to light…

I never expected her to return so quickly.

Especially not with my son beside her.

Alexander looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not calm.

Just exhausted.

The kind of exhaustion that comes when someone has spent hours fighting a battle inside their own mind.

Bianca looked different too.

The confidence she usually carried like armor was gone.

Her expensive clothes were still perfect.

Her hair was still carefully styled.

Her makeup was still flawless.

But something had changed.

For the first time since I met her, she looked like someone who did not know what to do next.

“Mom,” Alexander said quietly.

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

Neither of them moved immediately.

That told me everything.

Because Bianca had never hesitated to enter my home before.

She used to walk through my door as if she owned the room.

Tonight, she looked like a visitor.

A stranger.

Someone who was no longer sure she belonged.

Finally, Alexander walked inside.

Bianca followed.

We sat in the living room.

The same room where Alexander used to sit as a child, doing homework while I cooked dinner.

The same room where he had once told me about his dreams.

Now he sat across from me as a grown man trying to understand how much of his life had been built on secrets.

“I need to explain,” Bianca said.

Her voice was softer than usual.

I looked at her.

“Explain what?””

She swallowed.

“Everything.””

I almost smiled.

Because that was the problem.

People who hide things for years often believe one conversation can fix everything.

But trust is not a broken plate that can simply be glued back together.

Once cracks appear, you always know where they are.

Alexander leaned forward.

“Start with the truth.””

Bianca looked at him.

“I will.””

“No excuses.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Alexander…”

“No.””

His voice was calm.

But firm.

“I spent years listening to explanations. I listened to why my mother was wrong. Why my feelings were wrong. Why I needed distance from people who loved me.””

He shook his head.

“Tonight I just want the truth.””

For a moment, Bianca looked hurt.

Then I saw something else.

Fear.

She knew she had lost control of the conversation.

That was new for her.

“I did know about the inheritance,” she admitted.

Alexander closed his eyes.

Even though he already knew, hearing it from her still hurt.

“How?””

“My father told me.””

“Before we met?””

“Yes.””

The answer came quietly.

No denial.

No argument.

Just the truth.

“And you still approached me?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The silence that followed was painful.

I watched my son.

A part of him wanted to be angry.

Another part still wanted to understand.

That was Alexander.

Even when someone hurt him, he searched for reasons.

“I want to know why,” he said.

Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

I almost interrupted.

But I stopped myself.

Because I wanted to hear her.

Not because I believed her.

Because sometimes people reveal more when they are allowed to speak.

“I grew up watching my parents struggle,” she continued.

“My father always told me that money was the difference between having choices and having none.””

She looked at Alexander.

“When I met you, I saw someone who had security.””

Alexander stared at her.

“Security?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became smaller.

“You had a family. Education. A future. Resources.””

“And you saw me as an opportunity?””

The question hurt because it was true.

Bianca looked away.

“At first…”

She stopped.

At first.

Those two words said more than she probably intended.

Alexander laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes disappointment sounds like laughter.

“At first.””

He repeated the words.

“Do you understand how that sounds?””

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

He stood up.

“I loved you.””

Bianca looked up.

“I still love you.””

His expression changed.

“But I don’t know if you ever loved me the way I loved you.””

That sentence broke something in the room.

Because love is not just about staying.

It is about seeing someone as a person.

Not as a solution.

Not as a resource.

Not as a way out.

Bianca wiped her eyes.

“I did love you.””

“Then why?””

Her answer came after a long pause.

“Because I thought I could control everything.””

That surprised me.

Even Alexander looked confused.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“I thought if I controlled the situation, nothing could go wrong.””

She looked at me.

“That included your mother.””

I remained silent.

“Your relationship with Helga scared me.””

Alexander frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she knew you before me.””

That answer revealed more than she realized.

She was not afraid of my actions.

She was afraid of my history with him.

She was afraid because there was a bond she could not replace.

“You were the person he trusted most,” Bianca said.

“And instead of building my own relationship with him, I tried to remove yours.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know that was wrong.””

I looked at her.

At least now she was finally saying the truth.

Not a polished version.

Not a carefully prepared defense.

The truth.

But then she said something unexpected.

“And I’m sorry.””

The words hung in the room.

I had imagined hearing that apology many times.

In my imagination, it felt powerful.

Satisfying.

But reality was different.

Because when someone hurts you deeply, an apology does not erase the pain.

It only confirms that the pain was real.

“Sorry for what?”” I asked.

Bianca looked at me.

“For everything.””

“That is not specific enough.””

Alexander looked at me.

Not angry.

Just surprised.

But I continued.

“If you are truly sorry, then you need to understand what you did.””

Bianca lowered her eyes.

I spoke calmly.

“You did not just take money.””

She nodded.

“You did not just lie about finances.””

Another nod.

“You made my son believe his own mother was a problem.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice remained gentle.

“But I don’t think you do.””

The room became quiet.

“You took years of memories between a mother and her son and turned them into something negative.””

I looked at Alexander.

“You made him question the person who sacrificed everything for him.””

Then I looked back at Bianca.

“That damage is not repaired because you say sorry.””

She nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

But Alexander suddenly spoke.

“There’s still something I don’t understand.””

We both looked at him.

“Why did you try to take control of the inheritance?””

Bianca became still.

There it was.

The question she did not want.

The question that had been waiting.

“I told you why.””

“No.””

Alexander shook his head.

“You told me why you wanted financial security.””

He looked directly at her.

“But why did you try to make me seem incapable of managing my own assets?””

Bianca said nothing.

And that silence was an answer.

“Bianca.””

She looked away.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because my father told me to.””

My heart sank.

Again.

Ewald.

Everything kept leading back to him.

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“What did he tell you?””

“That if you controlled the inheritance, we would have everything we needed.””

“And if I controlled it?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said you might listen to your mother.””

There it was.

The real fear.

Not money.

Not security.

Me.

They believed I was the person standing between them and control.

Because I was the one person who knew Alexander before they did.

“I never wanted his money,” I said.

Bianca looked at me.

“I know that now.””

“Do you?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you treat me like an enemy?””

Her eyes filled again.

“Because my father convinced me you would ruin everything.””

I almost laughed.

The irony was unbelievable.

For years, I had been accused of interfering.

When the truth was that other people had been interfering with my family.

“Your father used you,” Alexander said.

Bianca looked at him.

“I know.””

“And you used me.””

Her face collapsed.

“Yes.””

That honesty hurt him.

I could see it.

Because sometimes the truth is easier to fight than acceptance.

Alexander walked to the window.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then:

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

Bianca nodded.

“I understand.””

“I don’t know if our marriage can survive.””

A tear fell from her eye.

“I understand that too.””

I watched her carefully.

Was this genuine regret?

Or another strategy?

After everything that happened, I knew better than to judge too quickly.

But then she did something I never expected.

She removed her wedding ring.

Slowly.

She placed it on the table.

“I’m not going to ask you to stay because of promises.””

Alexander looked at her.

“I’m not going to use guilt.””

She took a deep breath.

“If you decide this marriage is over, I will accept it.””

That was the first time I saw Bianca surrender control.

Not completely.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Alexander looked at the ring.

His face showed a thousand emotions at once.

Love.

Pain.

Anger.

Confusion.

Then Bianca stood.

“I should go.””

Neither of us stopped her.

At the door, she turned.

“Helga.””

I looked at her.

“I know you probably hate me.””

I was quiet.

Because the truth was complicated.

“I don’t hate you.””

She looked surprised.

“I hate what you did.””

Her eyes lowered.

“But those are not the same thing.””

She nodded.

Then she left.

After the door closed, Alexander remained standing there.

“She actually admitted everything.””

“Yes.””

“I don’t know what to do with that.””

“That is something you need to decide.””

He looked at me.

“Are you angry if I forgive her?””

The question broke my heart.

Because it showed me how much damage had been done.

He thought my love came with conditions.

He thought choosing compassion toward someone else might hurt me.

I walked toward him.

“Alexander.””

“Yes?””

“I spent my whole life teaching you to be a good person.””

He looked at me.

“I will never ask you to become cruel just because someone hurt you.””

His eyes filled.

“But forgiveness does not mean forgetting.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“And forgiveness does not mean allowing someone to hurt you again.””

“I know.””

That night, my son stayed at my apartment.

Not because he had nowhere else to go.

Because for the first time in years, he needed a place where he did not have to pretend.

The next morning, I woke up early.

Old habits.

I made coffee.

I made breakfast.

And for a few minutes, everything felt almost normal.

Then Alexander walked into the kitchen holding his phone.

His face was pale.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He handed me the screen.

It was a message.

From Bianca.

Only three words.

But those three words changed everything.

*“I found the evidence.””*

I looked at Alexander.

“What evidence?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then another message appeared.

This time, it was not from Bianca.

It was from Ewald.

And the message contained a warning.

A warning that made me realize something terrifying.

The fight was not over.

Because Bianca had not been the mastermind.

She had been a piece on someone else’s board.

May you like

And now the person who had moved the pieces for years…

Was finally stepping into the light.
