Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in My Son’s Past

For several seconds after Alexander told me the name, I could not speak.

Not because I did not understand.

Because I understood too quickly.

Some names have weight.

Some names carry years of memories, conversations, and trust.

And when those names are connected to betrayal, the pain feels different.

It is not the shock of discovering an enemy.

Enemies are easy.

It is the shock of discovering that someone you welcomed into your life was never standing where you thought they were.

“Mom?””

Alexander’s voice pulled me back.

“Did you hear me?””

“Yes.””

My voice sounded distant, even to myself.

“I heard you.””

He hesitated.

“I know this is a lot.””

A lot.

That was an understatement.

For years, I had believed the problems in my family began when Bianca entered Alexander’s life.

I thought she had slowly changed him.

I thought she had created the distance between us.

But now I was beginning to understand something much worse.

Maybe Bianca had not created the door.

Maybe someone else had opened it for her.

“Say the name again,” I whispered.

There was a pause.

Then Alexander repeated it.

And every memory I had connected to that person suddenly looked different.

“Clara.””

I closed my eyes.

Clara Weiss.

The woman who had first contacted me.

The woman who had claimed she wanted to help me uncover the truth.

The woman who had sent me documents.

The woman I believed was an outsider.

How could it be her?

“She introduced us?”” I asked.

“That’s what Bianca said.””

I sat down slowly.

“No.””

“Mom?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

Not because I did not believe Alexander.

Because my mind was fighting against the possibility.

Clara had been kind to me.

At least, I thought she had.

When I first met her, she seemed like someone who understood my pain.

She told me she had seen how Bianca treated me.

She told me she admired my strength.

She told me I deserved to know the truth.

I remembered those conversations clearly.

Her sympathetic expression.

Her gentle voice.

The way she listened.

Now all those memories felt like pieces of a puzzle that had been arranged incorrectly.

“Mom, what is wrong?””

I looked toward the window.

The same window where I had spent many mornings drinking coffee and believing my family was simply going through a difficult period.

“Clara was the person who gave me the information about Bianca.””

Alexander was silent.

“What?””

I explained everything.

The message.

The documents.

The meetings.

The conversations.

I told him how Clara had appeared at exactly the right moment.

How she had given me information that pushed me to investigate further.

How I had believed she was helping me.

When I finished, Alexander did not speak.

Neither of us did.

Because we both understood the same terrifying possibility.

“What if she wanted you to find out?””

His words were quiet.

I looked down.

“That is what I am afraid of.””

“But why?””

That was the question.

Why would someone expose Bianca?

Why would someone reveal the truth?

Why would someone help destroy the very relationship they helped create?

Unless…

Unless destroying Bianca was never the goal.

Maybe there was another purpose.

A bigger one.

“I need to see her,” I said.

“Mom—”

“I need answers.””

Alexander was quiet for a moment.

Then he said:

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because if she thinks we already know everything, she will be careful.””

He understood immediately.

“You want to talk to her alone.””

“Yes.””

I had spent my entire life surviving difficult situations.

I knew something important.

People reveal themselves when they think they are in control.

And Clara still believed she was.

That afternoon, I called her.

She answered on the second ring.

“Helga?””

Her voice sounded warm.

Almost concerned.

The same voice that had convinced me she cared.

“I need to speak with you.””

“Of course.””

There was no hesitation.

“Is everything okay?””

I almost smiled.

Everything okay.

Such a simple question.

Such a complicated answer.

“I want to meet.””

“Today?””

“Yes.””

She paused.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

“Where?””

I chose a small café near the city center.

A place with enough people around to feel safe.

A place where emotions could not easily become dangerous.

When Clara arrived, she looked exactly as I remembered.

Elegant.

Calm.

Professional.

She wore a gray coat and carried a leather handbag.

She smiled when she saw me.

“Helga.””

She hugged me.

I allowed it.

But this time, I noticed something.

The hug was not warm.

It was calculated.

A performance.

We sat down.

She ordered coffee.

I ordered tea.

For several minutes, we talked about meaningless things.

The weather.

The city.

The usual topics people discuss when they are avoiding the real conversation.

Finally, I placed my cup down.

“Clara.””

“Yes?””

“Why did you help me?””

Her expression changed slightly.

“Help you?””

“Yes.””

“With Bianca.””

She looked surprised.

Or pretended to.

“I thought she was hurting you.””

“That is not an answer.””

A small silence followed.

Then she leaned back.

“You are direct.””

“I am seventy-two years old.””

I looked at her.

“I no longer have time for unnecessary conversations.””

For the first time, her smile disappeared.

“You are more like Bianca than she realizes.””

That sentence caught my attention.

“What does that mean?””

She looked away.

“Nothing.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“You said that for a reason.””

Clara sighed.

“You and Bianca are both stronger than people expect.””

Interesting.

Not an answer.

But information.

“Tell me the truth.””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“I did help you.””

“I know.””

“But not for the reason you think.””

My heart tightened.

There it was.

The confession hidden inside the sentence.

“Then why?””

Clara looked around the café.

Nobody was paying attention.

Finally, she lowered her voice.

“Because Bianca was going to destroy someone else’s life.””

“Whose?””

She looked directly at me.

“Alexander’s.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because everyone in this story seemed to claim they were protecting my son.

Everyone.

Bianca.

Clara.

Even people who caused the damage.

“Everyone says they are protecting Alexander,” I said.

“But they all hurt him.””

Clara looked uncomfortable.

“That’s fair.””

“Then explain.””

She took a deep breath.

“Bianca did not meet Alexander by accident.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“You do not know the full story.””

I waited.

“Bianca was searching for him.””

My fingers tightened around my cup.

“Why?””

“Because of his inheritance.””

I already knew that part.

“Everyone knows that now.””

“No.””

Her eyes became serious.

“Not everyone knows what the inheritance actually is.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Clara looked at me.

“The money is not the most valuable thing.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What is?””

“Ownership.””

I stared at her.

“Ownership of what?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your father’s old company shares.””

I felt my breath stop.

My father.

Alexander’s grandfather.

The man who had left him the inheritance.

Years ago, I thought it was simply money.

Savings.

A financial gift.

But maybe I had never understood the full value.

“What shares?””

Clara lowered her voice.

“Your father invested before the company expanded. Those shares became worth much more over time.””

I stared at her.

“How much?””

She looked away.

“That is not the point.””

“It is exactly the point.””

She sighed.

“Millions.””

The word felt unreal.

Millions.

For years, I had lived simply.

I worked.

I saved.

I worried about small expenses.

Meanwhile, somewhere inside legal documents and financial records was something much larger.

Something I never understood.

Something Bianca discovered.

“Alexander knew?””

“No.””

“Then who knew?””

Clara looked at me.

“Markus.””

My late husband.

Again.

Everything kept returning to him.

The man who had left us.

The man who had created wounds that never fully healed.

The man whose choices were still affecting our lives years after his death.

“Markus made a deal,” Clara continued.

“With Ewald?””

“Yes.””

“What kind of deal?””

Clara looked uncomfortable.

“The shares were supposed to transfer to Alexander when he reached a certain age.””

“That is what I knew.””

“But Markus added conditions.””

“What conditions?””

She hesitated.

Then said:

“That Alexander could not access everything unless certain family circumstances were met.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Markus wanted control even after death.””

I felt anger rising.

Not at Clara.

Not even at Bianca.

At Markus.

Because once again, his choices had created problems for people who had nothing to do with them.

“What circumstances?””

Clara looked at me.

“Marriage.””

The word sat between us.

I understood immediately.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That cannot be true.””

“Markus believed a stable marriage would protect Alexander.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A stable marriage?””

I looked at her.

“So he created a condition that made my son vulnerable to someone like Bianca?””

Clara said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

The irony was unbearable.

A man who wanted to protect his son had unknowingly created the perfect opportunity for someone to manipulate him.

“Why did you introduce them?”” I asked.

Clara looked down.

Finally.

The truth.

“I didn’t know Bianca was like that at first.””

“But you knew enough.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She was silent.

Then she admitted:

“Because Ewald asked me to.””

My stomach dropped.

“Ewald?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he needed someone close to Alexander.””

I stared at her.

“So you were sent to him.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped Bianca.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me more than the betrayal.

“Then why help me?””

Clara’s eyes filled slightly.

“Because I made a mistake.””

I waited.

“I thought I was helping Bianca secure a future.””

She looked ashamed.

“But when I saw how she treated Alexander… how she isolated him from you… I realized I had helped create something terrible.””

I studied her.

“And you wanted forgiveness?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

“I wanted to fix what I helped break.””

For the first time since meeting her, I believed something in her voice.

Not everything.

But something.

Because guilt has a sound.

And Clara sounded like someone who had been carrying it for a long time.

“What happens now?”” I asked.

She looked at me seriously.

“Now Bianca will do whatever she can to protect herself.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

Her expression became darker.

“She has one more thing she has not told Alexander.””

“What?””

Clara leaned closer.

“Something about the inheritance.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“She already tried to access it.””

I stared at her.

“She did what?””

“She tried to move control of the assets before Alexander knew.””

“How?””

Clara looked toward the window.

“By proving that Alexander was not capable of managing it alone.””

The meaning was immediate.

And horrifying.

Bianca was not just trying to take money.

She was building a case.

A way to control him.

A way to make herself the person responsible for his future.

I stood slowly.

The café suddenly felt too small.

Too warm.

Too crowded.

I needed air.

I needed to think.

Before I left, Clara grabbed my hand.

“Helga.””

I looked at her.

“You need to be careful.””

“With Bianca?””

“With everyone.””

That sentence followed me all the way home.

Because I finally understood something.

This was never just about a stolen envelope.

It was never just about a cruel daughter-in-law.

It was never just about a family argument.

It was about years of secrets.

Money.

Manipulation.

And people who believed they could control my son’s life because they underestimated one thing.

They underestimated me.

But there was one more thing I did not know.

When Alexander returned home that night, he was not alone.

May you like

And the person standing beside him was the last person I expected to see.

Bianca.
