Chapter 7: The Coffin That Never Held My Husband

Edward's phone continued ringing.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood in the doorway, holding the photograph with both hands. I could see his fingers trembling.

“Answer it,” he said.

Edward looked at the screen.

“Daniel, this isn't the time.””

“Then when? Twenty-two years from now?””

Edward pressed the button.

“Thomas.””

A man's voice came through the speaker.

“Edward. I was wondering how long it would take you to show your face.””

Edward glanced at Daniel.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere you should have visited a long time ago.””

“You need to stop interfering.””

Thomas laughed.

“That's an interesting thing to hear from a man who has been interfering with a dead man's inheritance for twenty-two years.””

Edward's face tightened.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Thomas, I need answers.””

“Danny?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then Thomas said something that made my heart stop.

“Your father is alive.””

I grabbed the edge of the hallway table.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could control it.

Daniel looked at me.

“Mom?””

I shook my head.

“No. That's impossible. I saw his coffin.

I attended his funeral. I watched them lower him into the ground.””

Thomas spoke gently.

“Margaret, I know what you were told. But you never saw Robert's body.””

I felt the room spinning.

I remembered the funeral.

The black cars.

The church bells.

The smell of lilies.

Edward standing beside me, holding my elbow while I cried.

The coffin had been closed.

I had asked to see Robert one last time.

Edward had told me the injuries were too severe.

He had said the police recommended a closed-casket funeral.

I had believed him.

Because he was Robert's brother.

Because he had cried harder than anyone.

Because I had been too broken to question anything.

“Where is he?”” I whispered.

Thomas answered.

“I don't know his exact location. I haven't seen him in person for years. But I know he survived the accident.””

Daniel's voice became sharp.

“How?””

“Your father's car went off the road. He was badly injured, but he wasn't dead. Someone found him before emergency services arrived.””

“Who?””

“Edward.””

I turned toward my brother-in-law.

He looked down.

Daniel's expression changed.

“You found my father alive?””

Edward said nothing.

“You found him alive, and you let us bury someone else?””

“Daniel, listen—”

“ANSWER ME!””

Edward flinched.

For the first time, the man who had always controlled every family gathering looked small.

He slowly removed his overcoat.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“From what?””

“From the people who wanted him dead.””

“By making his wife believe he was dead?””

Edward rubbed his face.

“You don't understand what was happening back then.””

I stepped forward.

“Then help me understand.””

He looked at me.

There was something almost apologetic in his eyes.

“Robert was investigating the company accounts. He discovered that Richard Caldwell had been moving money through several shell companies. But Caldwell wasn't working alone.””

“Who else?””

Edward swallowed.

“Thomas.””

I turned toward the phone.

Thomas didn't deny it.

Daniel looked between them.

“Both of you?””

Thomas's voice became tired.

“I helped establish some of those companies. I didn't know where all the money was going until Robert showed me the records.””

Edward interrupted.

“That's convenient.””

“Don't start with me, Edward.””

“You were the one who disappeared.””

“Because you threatened my family.””

The words hung in the air.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“What happened after the accident?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Edward called me that night. He said Robert had been injured and needed help. When I arrived, Robert was barely conscious. His car had been forced off the road.””

Edward shook his head.

“I didn't force anyone off the road.””

“You arranged for Victor Shaw to follow him.””

“I told him to frighten Robert, not kill him!””

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

Daniel looked horrified.

“You knew someone was following Dad?””

Edward closed his eyes.

“I thought I could control the situation.””

Thomas continued.

“Robert was taken to a private medical facility. His injuries were severe. He needed surgery, and he couldn't speak for several days.””

“Why wasn't he brought home?”” Daniel asked.

“Because the men responsible were still looking for him. Edward believed the only way to keep Robert alive was to make everyone think he was dead.””

I stared at Edward.

“And you agreed?””

He looked at me.

“I thought he would return when it was safe.””

“When?””

Edward had no answer.

I slapped the table.

“When were you going to tell me?””

His voice broke.

“Margaret, I am sorry.””

“Twenty-two years, Edward! Twenty-two Christmases! Twenty-two birthdays! You watched me raise his son alone!””

I could no longer hold back my tears.

“You sat at my kitchen table and told me I was strong enough to move on. You encouraged me to take down his photographs because you said Daniel needed to stop living in the past.””

Edward lowered his head.

“I know.””

“You knew?””

He nodded.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is my father?””

Edward looked at him.

“I don't know.””

Thomas answered immediately.

“I do.””

Everyone turned toward the phone.

“Robert is in a rehabilitation residence outside Asheville, North Carolina. He's been using another name.””

My knees nearly gave way.

Daniel caught me.

“Mom, sit down.””

I sank into the nearest chair.

“Is he well?””

Thomas hesitated.

“His physical condition improved, but the accident affected his memory. He remembers pieces of his life. Some days he knows exactly who he is. Other days, he struggles to recognize familiar faces.””

I covered my mouth.

“Does he remember Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“Does he remember me?””

Thomas was quiet for a moment.

“Every time I've spoken to him, he's asked about you.””

I began crying.

Not the quiet tears I had shed at the wedding.

These came from somewhere deeper.

For twenty-two years, I had spoken to my husband at his grave.

I had told him about Daniel's graduation.

His first job.

His first serious girlfriend.

I had told him when I was frightened.

When the roof leaked.

When I missed him so badly that I couldn't sleep.

And all that time, he might have been alive.

Daniel crouched beside me.

“Mom, we'll find him.””

I nodded.

But something else was troubling me.

“Thomas,” I whispered, “if Robert was alive, why didn't he contact us?””

Thomas sighed.

“Because someone made him believe you were dead.””

I stared at the phone.

“What?””

“After the accident, Edward told Robert that you and Daniel had been killed in a separate incident. He said the house had burned down.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“What?””

Edward's face crumpled.

“I didn't know what else to tell him!””

“You told Dad we were dead?””

“I was trying to keep him from returning!””

“Why?””

Edward looked at the photograph.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“Because if Robert had come home, he would have discovered what I did with the company.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Edward looked at him.

“I transferred the controlling shares.””

“To whom?””

Edward's eyes moved toward the wooden box.

Then he answered.

“To myself.””

Before Daniel could respond, Thomas spoke.

“That's not the worst part.””

A notification appeared on Daniel's phone.

An email from Martin Hayes.

*URGENT: EMERGENCY TRUST HEARING SCHEDULED FOR 9:00 A.M. TOMORROW.*

Attached was a scanned document.

It showed that Edward had already transferred part of the company ownership.

And the recipient's name wasn't his.

It was Lauren Caldwell's.

Daniel looked up.

“Uncle Edward, what have you done?””

Edward backed toward the door.

“Something I can no longer undo.””

Then he ran.

And as Daniel rushed after him, my phone began ringing.

The number was unfamiliar.

I answered.

A weak male voice whispered:

“Margaret?””

My hand went numb.

It was a voice I had not heard in twenty-two years.

May you like

“It's me, sweetheart.””

Then the call disconnected.
