Chapter 14: The Last Man Standing
The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Detective Carter pushed Daniel behind a concrete barrier.
“Stay down!””
Officers moved toward the loading bay.
Thomas grabbed Daniel's shoulder.
“Don't move.””
Another shot rang out.
Then came the sound of something heavy hitting the floor.
“Police! Drop your weapon!””
Silence followed.
Daniel looked toward the warehouse entrance.
“Who fired?””
Detective Carter raised her hand.
“Stay where you are.””
Two officers emerged from the building, escorting a man in handcuffs.
He was wearing a dark jacket and a baseball cap.
When he lifted his head, Daniel recognized him.
James Whitmore.
His uncle.
The man who had spoken at his wedding.
The man who had stood beside Lauren's father in the photographs.
James looked toward William.
“You said nobody would be here!””
William's expression hardened.
“Shut your mouth.””
James laughed bitterly.
“You promised me the recording was gone.””
William stepped forward.
“And you promised me Robert was dead.””
The two men stared at each other.
Detective Carter moved between them.
“That's enough.””
Daniel stood.
“Where's the recording?””
William looked at him.
“You really believe a recording will change anything?””
“It will prove what you did.””
William laughed.
“Proof is only useful when people believe it.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“My father spent twenty-two years believing his wife and son were dead. My mother spent twenty-two years visiting an empty grave. You took everything from us.””
William's face remained cold.
“Your father was weak.””
Daniel's fists clenched.
“He trusted you.””
“And that was his mistake.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“You arranged the accident because Robert refused to sign away his shares.””
William turned toward him.
“Don't pretend you're innocent, Reed. You helped build the company.””
“I also helped steal from it. But I didn't order Robert killed.””
William smiled.
“No. You just helped us clean up afterward.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
Daniel looked at him.
“Is that true?””
Thomas nodded.
“I made mistakes. Serious ones. I thought I could protect Robert by helping him disappear. I was wrong.””
Detective Carter approached William.
“Where is the original recording?””
William looked toward the warehouse.
“Inside.””
She signaled to an officer.
“Search it.””
A few minutes later, the officer returned carrying a metal case.
Inside were old company ledgers, several hard drives, and a small digital recorder.
Detective Carter examined the device.
“Is this the recording?””
William said nothing.
The detective turned it on.
A man's voice emerged.
William's.
Clear.
Cold.
“If Robert refuses to sign, Victor will make sure he never reaches the office again.””
Another voice answered.
James.
“And what about the boy?””
William replied.
“Daniel will grow up believing his father died in an accident. The shares will remain under our control. By the time he's old enough to understand, there won't be anything left to inherit.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then another voice spoke.
Richard Caldwell.
“And Margaret?””
William laughed.
“She'll be given enough money to stay quiet. If she asks questions, tell her the company is helping her.””
My stomach turned.
Detective Carter stopped the recording.
“That's enough.””
William looked furious.
“You can't use that.””
“Why not?””
“It's illegally obtained.””
The detective raised an eyebrow.
“It's company property recovered during a lawful search.””
William's expression changed.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Your father would never have wanted this.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Don't tell me what my father wanted.””
William leaned closer.
“You think arresting me will bring back those years? You think your mother can simply forgive everything?””
Daniel's voice broke.
“No.””
He paused.
“But at least she'll finally know the truth.””
William looked away.
The officers escorted him toward the police vehicles.
James was taken separately.
As they passed, James turned toward Daniel.
“Danny, listen. I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel didn't answer.
James continued.
“Your grandfather controlled everything. I had no choice.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You had twenty-two years to make a choice.””
James lowered his eyes.
Then the officers took him away.
Three hours later, Daniel returned to Cedar Ridge.
I was sitting beside Robert, holding his hand.
The moment Daniel entered, I knew something had happened.
“Did you find him?”” I asked.
Daniel nodded.
“Grandfather. Uncle James. We found the recording.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“It's over?””
Daniel looked at his father.
“The police have enough evidence to charge them. The financial investigators are tracing the money.””
Robert nodded slowly.
Then Daniel added, “There's something else.””
I looked at him.
“Lauren gave us the key to the storage unit.””
Robert frowned.
“Why?””
“She knew where the original documents were. She also told the police everything she knew about her father's involvement.””
Thomas entered behind Daniel.
“Lauren has agreed to cooperate.””
I was surprised.
“Will she be arrested?””
“Possibly,” Detective Carter said from the doorway.
“Her involvement in the attempted fraud is still under investigation. Cooperation doesn't automatically erase responsibility.””
I nodded.
That seemed fair.
Robert looked toward Daniel.
“Did you speak to her?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Daniel hesitated.
“She said she loved me.””
Robert's expression softened.
“What did you tell her?””
“That love doesn't excuse what she did.””
Robert nodded.
“Good.””
The next morning, Martin Hayes appeared at the residence.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive suit was wrinkled, and his usual confidence had disappeared.
Detective Carter accompanied him.
“Mr. Bennett,” Martin began, “I owe you an apology.””
Robert looked at him.
“For what?””
“For helping Edward and James alter the original records. I told myself I was protecting the company. I was protecting my career.””
Thomas crossed his arms.
“You knew Robert was alive.””
Martin nodded.
“I knew he survived. I believed Edward when he said keeping him hidden was necessary.””
Robert stared at him.
“And you helped falsify my death.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Martin lowered his head.
“Because I was afraid.””
Robert looked at him for a long time.
Then he said, “Fear is not an excuse for destroying another man's family.””
Martin nodded.
“I know.””
Detective Carter explained that Martin had agreed to provide testimony and turn over the remaining legal files.
The original trust would be restored under independent supervision.
The company would undergo a complete financial audit.
And every transaction connected to the fraudulent transfers would be examined.
Daniel listened carefully.
Then he asked, “What happens to the shares?””
Martin answered.
“Under the original trust agreement, your father remains the primary beneficiary while he's alive. Upon his death, the controlling interest transfers to you.””
Robert looked at his son.
“That's what I wanted.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't want a company that destroyed our family.””
Robert smiled faintly.
“Then change what it stands for.””
I looked at my husband.
He was still weak.
Still recovering.
But there was something in his eyes I hadn't seen in twenty-two years.
Hope.
That afternoon, Daniel received another message.
Lauren.
I gave the police everything. I know you may never forgive me. But there's something else I need to tell you.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Your grandfather wasn't the only person who wanted your father's death. Richard Caldwell gave the final order. And I have proof that he survived.
Daniel looked toward Robert.
“Dad?””
Robert nodded.
“I know.””
“Where is he?””
Robert reached for the notebook.
“Check the last page.””
Daniel opened it.
A handwritten address appeared beneath a series of account numbers.
A private estate in Savannah, Georgia.
And beside it, one final sentence in Robert's handwriting.
Richard Caldwell is living under the name William Harris. He knows where the money went.
Daniel looked up.
“Then we find him.””
Robert shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he won't be hiding from the police anymore.””
Robert looked at me.
“He'll be hiding from the person who has the money.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Robert took my hand.
Then he answered.
“The person who received the final payment three days ago.””
My heart stopped.
Because the account had been opened in my name.

And the recipient of the last transfer was listed as:
*MARGARET BENNETT.*
