Chapter 13: The Child They Used Against Me

I don't remember the drive to the hospital.

I remember pieces.

The sound of the engine.

The flashing lights ahead of us.

Detective Harris speaking into his radio.

My hands shaking so badly that I had to grip the seat to stop them.

But the rest was a blur.

Because my mind had only one thought.

Leo.

My son.

The child who had already been hurt once.

The child everyone had used as a piece in their game.

I couldn't lose him.

Not after everything.

When we reached the hospital, the entrance was surrounded by police vehicles.

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Harris looked at me.

“Sarah.””

“No.””

I opened the door before the car fully stopped.

I ran inside.

A security officer tried to stop me.

“Ma'am—”

“My son.””

The words came out broken.

“My son is here.””

He recognized me.

His expression changed.

“Third floor.””

I ran.

I didn't wait for the elevator.

I took the stairs.

Every step felt like it was taking too long.

Every second felt like another chance for something terrible to happen.

When I reached the pediatric floor, I saw officers everywhere.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Security.

But not Leo.

I turned.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That was enough to make my blood freeze.

“Where is my son?””

A nurse stepped forward.

“Sarah…”

“Where is he?””

“He's safe.””

The relief hit so hard my knees almost gave out.

“Safe?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is everyone looking like this?””

Detective Harris arrived behind me.

“What happened?””

The security officer approached.

“Someone entered the unit.””

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“A woman.””

My stomach dropped.

“Emma.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because they all knew.

“How did she get in?””

“She had identification.””

“What identification?””

The officer looked at me.

“Yours.””

Of course.

My identity.

Again.

“What happened?””

“She walked directly to Leo's room.””

My blood ran cold.

“Did she touch him?””

“No.””

“Did she hurt him?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

The officer looked toward the hallway.

“Because Leo was awake.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He saw her.””

I walked toward the room.

Leo was sitting up in bed.

A blanket wrapped around him.

A nurse beside him.

When he saw me, his eyes filled.

“Mom.””

I rushed to him.

I held him so tightly that he complained.

“Too tight.””

I didn't care.

“I thought…”

I couldn't finish.

He hugged me back.

“I'm okay.””

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

Thank God.

Then I pulled away.

“Leo.””

“Yes?””

“What happened?””

His face changed.

He looked scared.

“The lady came in.””

“Which lady?””

He looked toward the door.

“The one who looks like you.””

My heart sank.

“Emma.””

Leo nodded.

“She said her name was Sarah.””

I felt sick.

“What did she say?””

He looked down.

“She said she needed to talk to me.””

“About what?””

“She said she wanted to tell me the truth.””

Harris stepped closer.

“What truth?””

Leo looked at him.

“She said my mom wasn't who I thought she was.””

I felt anger rise.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“What else?””

Leo hesitated.

“She cried.””

That surprised me.

“Cried?””

He nodded.

“She said she didn't want to hurt anyone.””

The room became quiet.

“She said she only wanted her life back.””

I looked away.

Because for the first time, I saw the person behind the monster.

Not an excuse.

Not forgiveness.

But pain.

Emma had lost something.

She believed she had lost everything.

And instead of healing…

she had spent twenty-five years trying to steal what she thought belonged to her.

“What happened next?”” Harris asked.

Leo swallowed.

“She gave me something.””

“What?””

He pointed toward the bedside table.

The nurse picked up a small envelope.

My heart raced.

“What is that?””

Leo looked at me.

“She said you would understand.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

Two children.

Two little girls.

Me.

Emma.

But this time, there was something different.

On the back was handwriting.

Not my father's.

Not Brenda's.

A child's handwriting.

I turned it over.

The message was simple.

*I never hated you. I hated that I lost you.*

My eyes filled.

For a moment, I forgot everything.

The betrayal.

The fear.

The anger.

Because whoever wrote that had once been a little girl.

A little girl who lost her family.

A little girl who grew up believing she had been abandoned.

Then I noticed something else.

A second line.

*Daniel doesn't know the whole truth.*

I looked at Harris.

“What does that mean?””

His expression changed.

“Daniel may not know everything about his mother.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Then where is she?””

No one knew.

Not yet.

The hospital went into lockdown.

Every exit was monitored.

Every camera reviewed.

But Emma was gone.

Again.

Like she had vanished into the world.

An hour later, Harris brought me into a private room.

“We found something.””

I was exhausted.

“What now?””

“A message.””

“From Emma?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Your old family property.””

I stared.

“How?””

“Hidden inside the wall.””

“What did it say?””

He placed a copy in front of me.

I read.

*Sarah,*

*If you are reading this, then Daniel has probably told you that I am the enemy.*

I stopped.

Daniel.

Not Brenda.

Not Emma.

Daniel.

*He believes everything I did was for him. He believes I wanted revenge.*

The next line made my heart tighten.

*That isn't the truth.*

I kept reading.

*I spent twenty-five years trying to find out why our father chose you.*

My eyes burned.

*I hated you because I thought you replaced me.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*But when I discovered the truth, everything changed.*

I looked at Harris.

“What truth?””

He shook his head.

*You weren't chosen because you were better.*

*You were chosen because you were the one our father could save.*

I stopped.

My breathing changed.

*I was never angry because you had my life.*

*I was angry because I thought I lost mine.*

Then:

*Daniel doesn't know what really happened the night of the fire.*

*He believes our father destroyed us.*

*He believes revenge is justice.*

My hands tightened.

*But Daniel is wrong.*

*The person who started the fire was not our father.*

I looked up.

Harris leaned forward.

“Continue.””

The next words were written differently.

Faster.

Like whoever wrote them was afraid.

*It was Elizabeth.*

I froze.

“My biological mother.””

Harris nodded slowly.

The letter continued.

*She wanted both children gone.*

*She wanted revenge against William.*

*She started the fire because she believed losing us would destroy him.*

My heart pounded.

No.

*But she didn't know one thing.*

*Someone else was inside the house.*

I held my breath.

*Someone who saved us.*

The next sentence was underlined.

*Someone Daniel has spent twenty-five years trying to find.*

The letter ended there.

I looked at Harris.

“Who?””

“We don't know.””

“But Emma knew.””

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

He looked away.

“We found another clue.””

“What?””

“She left coordinates.””

“Where?””

He handed me the paper.

I recognized the location immediately.

The old lake.

The place my father used to take us.

I stood.

“Let's go.””

Harris shook his head.

“No.””

“I need to.””

“It could be a trap.””

“Everything is a trap.””

He didn't argue.

Because it was true.

When we arrived at the lake, the sun was setting.

The water was calm.

Almost peaceful.

That felt wrong.

Nothing in my life had been peaceful for days.

A figure stood near the trees.

I froze.

Emma.

She looked different without the disguise.

Older.

Tired.

Human.

For the first time, I didn't see Brenda.

I saw my sister.

My sister who I never knew I had.

Harris and the officers moved forward.

Emma raised her hands.

“I don't have a weapon.””

“Where is Daniel?”” Harris asked.

Her expression changed.

“That's why I brought Sarah here.””

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Emma looked at me.

“Because he is going to kill someone tonight.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“You.””

The lake went silent.

“Why?””

“Because he finally learned the truth.””

“What truth?””

Emma looked away.

“That he was never the victim.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Her eyes filled.

“Daniel wasn't just my son.””

A pause.

“He was Elizabeth's son.””

I felt the world shift.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“The woman who started the fire?””

Emma nodded.

“Daniel was the reason she came back.””

I couldn't breathe.

“He's my brother?””

Emma looked at me.

“Yes.””

Another family secret.

Another hidden child.

Another piece of a puzzle that never ended.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because your father believed the truth would destroy you.””

“And it didn't?””

Emma looked at me sadly.

“Look around.””

I had no answer.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Emma looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She answered.

“Daniel?””

Silence.

Then her expression turned to horror.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“No, you don't understand.””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Sarah is not the person you think she is.””

My blood ran cold.

Emma slowly lowered the phone.

“What did he say?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel said he found the final evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Her voice shook.

“Proof that the person who caused the fire…”

She stopped.

“No.””

“What?””

Emma stared at me.

“That you weren't the child who survived.””

I froze.

“What?””

Before anyone could react, a gunshot echoed across the lake.

Everyone dropped.

Officers shouted.

Harris pushed me down.

The world became noise.

Then silence.

When I opened my eyes, Emma was on the ground.

Blood spreading across her shoulder.

I crawled toward her.

“Emma.””

She grabbed my hand.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Not for herself.

For me.

“Sarah…”

“Yes?””

She struggled to speak.

“You have to find Daniel.””

“Why?””

Her fingers tightened around mine.

“Because he has the last piece.””

“What piece?””

She looked toward the darkness beyond the trees.

Then whispered:

“The truth about which one of us actually survived that night.””

And somewhere in the distance…

a phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

Harris looked toward the trees.

“Everyone move.””

I stared into the darkness.

Because I finally understood.

The truth we had been chasing for twenty-five years…

May you like

might not be about what happened during the fire.

It might be about who walked out of it.
