Chapter 12: The Memory They Wanted Me to Forget
For a few seconds, nobody reacted.
Not because we believed Brenda.
Because every person in that room was trying to understand what she had just said.
The reason your memories were erased…
is because you were the one who caused the fire.
My heart pounded.
“No.””
The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.
“No.””
Brenda's footsteps stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
“You always say that.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You're lying.””
“Am I?””
Her voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
Brenda had always been like that.
She never needed to scream.
She could destroy someone while speaking softly.
Detective Harris moved toward the staircase.
“Brenda Vance, step away from the stairs.””
She ignored him.
Instead, she spoke directly to me.
“Sarah, do you really think everyone spent twenty-five years protecting you because they loved you?””
My breathing became uneven.
“What are you talking about?””
“I think you know.””
“No.””
“You remember pieces.””
I felt a chill.
Because she was right.
The flashes.
The memories.
The strange feelings.
The farmhouse.
The rabbit.
The photograph.
Something was buried inside my mind.
Something I couldn't reach.
Brenda continued.
“Your father didn't erase your memory because he wanted to protect you.””
“Then why?””
“Because he knew what you did.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Brenda laughed.
“Oh, Rachel.””
“You were always too weak.””
“You knew this would happen.””
“No.””
Rachel's voice shook.
“I knew you would try to destroy her.””
Brenda sighed.
“You still think Sarah is innocent.””
I looked at Rachel.
“You know something.””
She didn't answer.
That hurt more than anything.
“Rachel.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know everything.””
“But you know enough.””
“Yes.””
“What happened that night?””
Before she could answer, Harris shouted again.
“Brenda, I am giving you one final warning.””
Silence.
Then a loud crash came from downstairs.
Everyone moved.
An officer ran toward the back hallway.
“Detective!””
“What?””
“The rear door is open.””
Harris looked down the stairs.
Brenda was gone.
She had never been standing where we thought.
She had been buying time.
“Find her!””
The officers rushed through the house.
I stood frozen.
Because even though Brenda had escaped…
her words remained.
Like poison.
The fire.
The memory.
The truth.
I turned toward Rachel.
“Tell me.””
She looked at the floor.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””
I stepped closer.
“I need the truth.””
Rachel looked at Harris.
Then back at me.
Finally, she nodded.
“Twenty-five years ago, there were two girls.””
I waited.
“You and Emma.””
“The first Sarah.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Your father had a secret.””
“What secret?””
“Emma wasn't just his daughter.””
I frowned.
“You said that already.””
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I mean Emma was the reason your father became obsessed with memory.””
I didn't understand.
“Why?””
“Because Emma remembered something.””
“What?””
Rachel looked at the old bedroom.
“Something from before the fire.””
I felt a strange pressure in my head.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Emma saw someone enter the house.””
“Who?””
“She was only six.””
“Who?””
Rachel whispered:
“Her mother.””
The room went silent.
I stared.
“Her mother?””
“Yes.””
“My mother?””
“No.””
I felt confused.
“Then who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Someone who wasn't supposed to exist.””
The words made no sense.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel opened another file.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Not mine.
Not Emma's.
Another name.
*Elizabeth Morgan.*
I looked at Rachel.
“Who is Elizabeth?””
“She was your father's first wife.””
My stomach tightened.
“My father was married before?””
“Yes.””
“Then why don't I know?””
“Because she disappeared.””
“Died?””
Rachel shook her head.
“No.””
“Then where did she go?””
Rachel looked toward the dark hallway.
“She was the person who started everything.””
I felt overwhelmed.
“My entire family was built on secrets.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father believed secrets could protect people.””
“And they didn't.””
“No.””
“They destroyed us.””
Rachel didn't argue.
The officers returned.
No Brenda.
She was gone.
Harris looked frustrated.
But when he saw our faces, he knew something had changed.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
“Brenda says I caused the fire.””
His expression hardened.
“And you believe her?””
“No.””
A pause.
“But I don't know if she's lying.””
Harris looked at Rachel.
“Explain.””
Rachel nodded.
“The fire happened because of a conflict inside the Morgan family.””
“What kind of conflict?””
“A child.””
Harris frowned.
“Emma?””
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Sarah.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Your existence was the conflict.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Rachel pointed toward the documents.
“Your father had two daughters.””
“Yes.””
“But he couldn't keep both.””
“Why?””
“Because of Elizabeth.””
I looked at the birth certificate.
“His first wife?””
“Yes.””
“What does she have to do with me?””
Rachel took a breath.
“She was your biological mother.””
The world stopped.
I couldn't hear anything.
Not the officers.
Not Harris.
Not the wind outside.
Only those words.
Your biological mother.
“No.””
Rachel's eyes filled with sadness.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“My mother raised me.””
“She did.””
“Then she was my mother.””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you saying she wasn't?””
“Because biology and love are not always the same thing.””
I looked away.
My entire life was changing piece by piece.
Every truth had another truth underneath it.
“So who was the woman who raised me?””
“Your father's second wife.””
“My mother.””
“Yes.””
“Then who was Elizabeth?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“The woman who disappeared.””
I felt dizzy.
“Why?””
“Because she discovered your father was hiding Emma.””
“Why would he hide his own daughter?””
“Because Emma wasn't his only secret.””
Another secret.
Of course.
Another layer.
“What was it?””
Rachel looked at Harris.
“I think he needs to hear this too.””
Harris nodded.
“Continue.””
Rachel opened a final folder.
Inside was a medical report.
“This is from the night of the fire.””
I looked.
The patient name was blurred.
But the date matched.
“What is this?””
“The original hospital record.””
“Original?””
“Yes.””
“What does it say?””
Rachel pointed.
My eyes followed.
And I stopped.
The report listed:
*Two female children recovered.*
Not one.
Two.
My hands shook.
“Two survivors?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Emma survived?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone say she died?””
“Because someone changed the records.””
“Who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Your father.””
I couldn't understand.
“Why?””
“Because he needed everyone to believe one child was gone.””
“Which child?””
Rachel didn't answer.
I already knew.
The room felt smaller.
“Me.””
Rachel looked away.
I swallowed.
“You're saying my father made everyone believe I died?””
“Yes.””
“And Emma became me.””
“Yes.””
My knees weakened.
“Why?””
Rachel's voice became quiet.
“Because after the fire, you were injured.””
“What kind of injury?””
“Your memory.””
I closed my eyes.
“You're saying I was the one who forgot.””
“Yes.””
“And Emma…”
“Remembered.””
I opened my eyes.
“Where is she now?””
Rachel went silent.
Harris looked at her.
“Rachel.””
Finally, she whispered:
“She has been closer than you think.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Your whole life.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She watched.””
“No.””
“She protected you.””
“No.””
“She became someone you trusted.””
My breathing stopped.
“Who?””
Rachel looked toward the doorway.
The empty doorway where Brenda had disappeared.
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“The person who has been trying to destroy you…”
She paused.
“…is also the person who spent years pretending to protect you.””
My mind raced.
No.
It couldn't be.
I looked at Harris.
He understood.
“Brenda.””
Rachel nodded.
“She is Emma.””
The room went completely silent.
I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.
“No.””
Rachel looked at me.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“It isn't.””
“Brenda is my sister-in-law.””
“Yes.””
“She married Mark.””
“Yes.””
“She has a daughter.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because she changed her identity.””
I couldn't speak.
All the pieces moved.
The hatred.
The obsession.
The resentment.
The way Brenda always compared herself to me.
The way she watched Leo.
The way she wanted control.
She wasn't just a woman who disliked me.
She was someone who believed my life belonged to her.
Harris spoke slowly.
“So Brenda Vance is actually Emma Morgan.””
“Yes.””
“Then Daniel Cross?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Her son.””
The room froze.
Daniel.
The name.
The prescription.
The plan.
The person behind everything.
“He's her son?””
“Yes.””
“And Mark?””
Rachel looked at me.
“He never knew.””
I thought about Mark.
His fear.
His guilt.
His confusion.
For the first time, I believed him.
He had been trapped too.
Rachel continued.
“Emma spent her entire life believing one thing.””
“What?””
“That your father stole her identity and gave it to you.””
My heart hurt.
“But he didn't.””
“No.””
“He chose me because I was hurt.””
“Yes.””
“He chose me because he loved me.””
“Yes.””
“And Emma hated me for something I never did.””
Rachel nodded.
“She built her whole life around that anger.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
It was Harris's.
He answered.
“Detective Harris.””
He listened.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
A pause.
“Are you certain?””
Another pause.
“Send the location.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
His eyes moved to me.
“Leo.””
My heart stopped.
“What about Leo?””
“The secure unit was breached.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Is he okay?””
“We don't know yet.””
I ran.
Harris grabbed his keys.
Behind us, the old farmhouse stood silent.
The room where my childhood ended.
The place where the truth had waited twenty-five years.
But as we rushed toward the hospital, one thought kept repeating in my mind.
Emma Morgan had spent her entire life trying to take my place.
May you like
And now she had taken the one thing I loved most.
My son.
