Chapter 8: The Night Lily Was Born

The silence after Diane’s words felt heavier than anything I had ever experienced.

Not even her cruelty toward Lily had prepared me for this.

Because there was something different about the way she looked at Jason.

Not anger.

Not guilt.

Confidence.

Like she knew something.

Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.

“Ask your husband what happened the night Lily was born.””

The words replayed in my mind.

Again.

And again.

I looked at Jason.

He didn’t move.

That was the answer.

Not the whole answer.

But enough.

“Jason?””

His eyes stayed on Diane.

“Mom, leave.””

Diane smiled.

“You still think you can protect her?””

My stomach tightened.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

That was when I knew.

Whatever happened that night wasn’t something small.

It wasn’t a misunderstanding.

It was something both of them had been carrying.

Something they were afraid I would discover.

I stepped toward Jason.

“Tell me.””

His face changed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Not another secret.””

Diane crossed her arms.

“Go ahead, Jason.””

She almost sounded amused.

“Tell her.””

Jason looked furious.

“Mom.””

“What?””

She laughed.

“You spent seven years pretending you were the hero.””

She looked at me.

“Maybe she should know the whole story.””

I looked between them.

“I’m listening.””

Jason closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then he whispered:

“When Lily was born…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Michael wasn’t the only person there.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Jason swallowed.

“My father was there.””

I frowned.

“Your father?””

He nodded.

“He came to the hospital.””

“Why?””

Jason looked at Diane.

And for the first time, she looked uncomfortable.

“Because he knew.””

“Knew what?””

Jason’s voice became quiet.

“He knew Lily was Michael’s daughter.””

The room spun.

I looked at Diane.

Then back at Jason.

“And?””

Jason looked away.

“And he wanted to help.””

Diane’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Jason turned toward her.

“It is.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharp.

“Your father was confused.””

“He wasn’t.””

“He was old.””

“He knew exactly what was happening.””

I stepped between them.

“Someone explain this to me.””

Jason took a breath.

“My father found out my mother had been threatening Michael.””

My hands tightened.

“And he tried to stop her?””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

Jason looked down.

“Because my mother stopped him.””

Again.

Always Diane.

Always control.

“What did she do?””

Jason didn’t answer.

Diane did.

“Your father was sick.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He had a heart condition.””

Jason looked at her angrily.

“Don’t.””

She ignored him.

“He couldn’t handle stress.””

I stared.

“You threatened him too?””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But it was enough.

Jason saw it.

“You did.””

Diane looked away.

“I protected this family.””

“No.””

Jason stepped closer.

“You destroyed it.””

For the first time, Diane looked hurt.

“You think I wanted this?””

“You wanted control.””

“I wanted stability.””

“You wanted everyone to obey you.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You were my son.””

“And Lily is my daughter.””

The words were powerful.

Because Jason finally said them without hesitation.

Not because of biology.

Not because of fear.

Because he meant it.

Diane looked at him.

Then at me.

“She will always be Michael’s child.””

I stepped forward.

“And?””

Diane looked surprised.

“And that doesn’t make her less ours.””

Something changed in Jason’s face.

Like he was hearing himself say the thing he had been afraid to admit for years.

Diane shook her head.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

Jason looked at her.

“I made a mistake seven years ago.””

Silence.

A real silence.

The kind that happens when someone finally says the truth.

I looked at Diane.

“What happened the night Lily was born?””

She stared at me.

Then she smiled.

Not kindly.

Almost sadly.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Jason.

“You should tell her.””

Jason looked at me.

“I was there when Lily was born.””

“I know.””

“But before that…”

He hesitated.

“Michael was supposed to be there.””

My chest tightened.

“Supposed to?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Jason looked down.

“The hospital called.””

“About what?””

“Michael was trying to come.””

I froze.

“Trying?””

Jason nodded.

“My mother had warned him not to.””

“And he came anyway?””

“Yes.””

My eyes filled.

“He wanted to see his daughter.””

Jason nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Jason’s voice became barely a whisper.

“My mother called security.””

I stopped breathing.

“She did what?””

“She told them Michael was harassing you.””

My hand went to my mouth.

“No.””

Jason nodded.

“She lied.””

I looked at Diane.

She didn’t deny it.

That was worse.

“You kept him away.””

Diane’s expression hardened.

“He was unstable.””

“He was the father.””

“He was a threat.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“He was a man trying to meet his child.””

Diane looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I held up the camera.

“You were afraid the truth would come out.””

Her face changed.

Because I was right.

Jason looked at the camera.

“We need to watch it.””

Diane immediately reacted.

“No.””

That one word told us everything.

Jason noticed.

I noticed.

The recording mattered.

“Why don’t you want us to watch it?””

She said nothing.

Jason picked up the camera.

“We’re watching it.””

Diane stepped forward.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Jason looked at her.

“For once, I do.””

We moved farther inside the storage unit.

Diane stayed near the door.

Watching.

Waiting.

Jason connected the camera to an old laptop we found in the storage box.

The screen flickered.

A moment later…

A video appeared.

Michael.

My heart stopped.

It was strange seeing him.

Not because I knew him.

But because I felt like I did.

Because I knew Lily.

And I saw pieces of her in him.

His eyes.

His smile.

The way he looked nervous but hopeful.

The video started.

Michael sat in what looked like a small apartment.

He looked tired.

But determined.

“If you’re watching this…”

He paused.

“I guess I didn’t get the chance to explain.””

My eyes filled.

His voice was softer than I expected.

“I want to start by saying this.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“Lily was never unwanted.””

I covered my mouth.

“She was loved from the beginning.””

Jason looked away.

Michael continued.

“I know people will tell her different things.””

A pause.

“I know some people will say I wasn’t ready.””

His eyes became sad.

“That I ran.””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t.””

The room was silent.

“I made mistakes before Lily was born.””

He looked down.

“And I know mistakes have consequences.””

Then he looked back up.

“But my daughter was not one of them.””

My tears fell.

Michael continued.

“I wanted to tell Emily the truth.””

My heart stopped.

“I wanted to explain everything.””

A pause.

“But Jason stopped me.””

The room went completely still.

Jason closed his eyes.

Michael continued.

“I don’t hate him.””

Jason looked up.

“I know he loves Lily.””

A tear rolled down Jason’s face.

“But love doesn’t mean you always make the right choice.””

The words hit hard.

Because they were true.

Michael looked away.

“The night Lily was born, I was outside that hospital room.””

I held my breath.

“I heard her cry.””

A shaky breath.

“And I knew I wanted to spend my entire life protecting that sound.””

I started crying.

“But Diane told me if I walked through that door, she would destroy everything.””

The video paused.

Michael looked like he was fighting tears.

“She told me Emily had chosen Jason.””

My heart broke.

“She told me Lily would be happier without me.””

A long silence.

“And I believed her.””

I looked at Jason.

He looked destroyed.

Michael continued.

“I shouldn’t have believed her.””

The video went dark for a second.

Then came back.

“Because a father doesn’t give up because someone tells him to.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“He fights.””

A pause.

“But I was young.””

He looked down.

“I was scared.””

Then he said something that changed everything.

“And that’s why I left proof.””

Jason looked at the screen.

“What proof?””

Michael continued.

“If anything happens to me, if anyone tries to erase the truth…”

He leaned closer.

“The records will show what happened.””

My heart raced.

Records.

The same thing he mentioned in the letter.

Michael continued.

“There is one thing Diane doesn’t know.””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Diane.

Because everyone understood.

There was more.

A hidden piece of evidence.

Something Diane had failed to destroy.

Jason turned slowly.

“Where is it?””

I looked at Diane.

She looked afraid.

Really afraid.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Diane was never afraid.

Not when she hurt Lily.

Not when she lied.

Not when she controlled everyone.

But now…

She was afraid.

Jason stepped toward her.

“You know.””

Diane didn’t answer.

“You know where the records are.””

Still nothing.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

And for the first time, I saw panic.

Real panic.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke on the other end.

I couldn’t hear the words.

But I saw Diane’s face change.

The confidence disappeared.

The control disappeared.

She looked suddenly like someone who had been caught.

Then she whispered:

“No.””

A pause.

“That’s impossible.””

She hung up.

Jason stared.

“What happened?””

Diane looked at me.

Not Jason.

Me.

And what she said made my blood run cold.

“Michael is alive.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t move.

Jason looked like he had been hit.

“What?””

Diane’s eyes filled with fear.

“He knows everything.””

I stared at her.

The man everyone said disappeared.

The man everyone said left.

The man everyone said was gone.

Was alive.

And suddenly, the truth wasn’t buried in the past.

It was coming back.

For Lily.

For Jason.

For me.

May you like

And for Diane…

it was coming back for revenge.
