Chapter 4: The Woman Who Erased the Past

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Not because I didn’t have questions.

Because I had too many.

Every thought crashed into the next.

Diane.

Michael.

Jason.

Lily.

My daughter’s entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.

And I was only now discovering the missing pages.

“My mother?””

The words barely came out.

Jason nodded.

“She made him leave.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

He looked down at the table.

And I knew before he said anything that the answer would hurt.

“She threatened him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“With what?””

Jason took a long breath.

“His family. His future. His reputation.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does when you know my mother.””

I thought about Diane standing in that backyard.

The way she looked at Lily.

The way she spoke about her.

Not like a child.

Like a problem.

Like something that needed to be removed.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

“What did she threaten him with?””

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Jason.””

His eyes met mine.

“Michael was already struggling.””

“With what?””

“His family had money problems. His father had health issues. There were things happening behind the scenes.””

“And your mother knew?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“She used that against him?””

Jason nodded.

“She told him if he tried to contact you, she would make sure his family lost everything.””

I stared at him.

“That’s insane.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not just insane. That’s evil.””

Jason didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

For years, he had defended his mother.

Made excuses.

Explained her behavior.

But even he couldn’t defend this.

“She told him you were better off without him.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Better off?””

My voice rose.

“She took away my choice.””

“I know.””

“She took away Michael’s choice.””

“I know.””

“She took away Lily’s chance to know her biological father.””

Jason closed his eyes.

“I know.””

The room went quiet.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Did you help her?””

Jason froze.

That was the moment.

The moment I saw the truth before he said it.

“You did.””

His face fell.

“Emily…”

“You helped her.””

“I didn’t want to.””

“But you did.””

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because some part of me still wanted him to deny it.

To tell me I was wrong.

To tell me I had misunderstood.

But he didn’t.

“I was twenty-eight.””

I stared at him.

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It’s not.””

“Then what is?””

Jason rubbed his hands over his face.

“I was scared.””

Again.

That word.

Scared.

The word that had destroyed everything.

“I thought if Michael stayed, I would lose you.””

My heart sank.

“You were jealous.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“You loved me. You wanted Lily. You wanted the family you always dreamed of.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I did.””

“And Michael was the person standing in the way.””

“He wasn’t supposed to be.””

“But he was.””

Jason didn’t respond.

Because he knew.

A terrible truth sat between us.

Jason hadn’t created the situation.

But he had benefited from it.

And that was something I couldn’t ignore.

“You let another man disappear so you could become Lily’s father.””

His face twisted with pain.

“That’s not how it happened.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He stood.

“I didn’t know what my mother was going to do.””

“But you knew she was involved.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Jason swallowed.

“After Michael disappeared.””

I stared at him.

“So you found out.””

“Yes.””

“And you still stayed silent.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it was better than another lie.

I walked away from him.

Because I needed distance.

I needed air.

I needed to understand how the man I loved could do something so wrong and still be the same person who sang bedtime songs to our daughter.

That was the cruelest part.

People weren’t simple.

They weren’t just good or bad.

Sometimes the person who loved you most could also be the person who hurt you deepest.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Another message.

My heart stopped.

Unknown number.

*Did Jason finally tell you about the hospital?*

I stared at the screen.

Hospital?

“What now?”” Jason asked.

I looked at him.

“Who sent this?””

“I don’t know.””

“Someone who knows everything.””

Jason’s face became serious.

“Emily, don’t respond.””

“Why?””

“Because we don’t know who it is.””

I looked at him.

“That’s exactly why I need to know.””

I typed.

*Who are you?*

The reply came almost instantly.

*Someone who tried to protect Lily before you knew she needed protection.*

My stomach tightened.

I showed Jason.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“You know this person.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

He looked terrified.

“Jason?””

He sat down slowly.

“Whoever this is…”

He stopped.

“Who?””

“They know about the hospital.””

“What happened at the hospital?””

Jason didn’t answer.

And that was the moment I realized something.

There wasn’t just one secret.

There were layers.

A lifetime of them.

“Tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

“After Lily was born, there was a test.””

“A test?””

“Yes.””

My heart raced.

“A DNA test?””

He nodded.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“Why?””

“Because my mother demanded it.””

“Diane?””

“Yes.””

I felt anger rise again.

“She knew?””

“She suspected.””

“And you agreed?””

“I didn’t want to.””

“But you did.””

Jason looked down.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

I couldn’t believe this.

Before Lily could even understand the world around her, adults were already questioning where she belonged.

Already treating her like evidence.

Like a problem to solve.

“What did the test say?””

Jason was silent.

Too silent.

“Jason.””

His eyes filled.

“The test confirmed she wasn’t mine.””

I looked away.

Even though I already knew.

Hearing it still hurt.

But then I remembered something.

The message.

The hospital.

“The hospital message says someone tried to protect Lily before I knew she needed protection.””

Jason looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

Another buzz.

This time, the message contained a photo.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

It was a picture of a newborn baby.

Lily.

My Lily.

Tiny.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was the person standing beside her.

A man.

Young.

Tired.

Holding her tiny hand.

Michael.

I had never seen him before.

But I knew.

Somehow, I knew.

Because the way he looked at that baby wasn’t the look of someone who didn’t care.

It was love.

Pure.

Immediate.

A father looking at his daughter.

Below the picture was a message.

*Jason told you Michael left. He didn’t tell you Michael begged to stay.*

I felt tears burn my eyes.

I looked at Jason.

“Why did you lie?””

His face broke.

“I didn’t know he had this.””

“You knew he wanted to stay.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he loved her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Jason looked destroyed.

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand how fear can make someone do this.””

He whispered:

“Because I thought if Michael stayed, Lily would have two fathers.””

I stared at him.

“And you thought that was a bad thing?””

“No.””

He wiped his face.

“I thought I would lose.””

Those words were painful because they were honest.

Jason wasn’t afraid Lily would lose.

He was afraid he would.

And that fear had controlled him.

I looked back at the picture.

Michael.

Holding baby Lily.

A moment stolen from him.

A moment Diane had tried to erase.

“How do we find him?””

Jason looked up.

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

He hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“Jason.””

“I might know someone who knows.””

“Who?””

His face changed.

“My mother.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

Jason looked at me.

“What?””

“She started this.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“And now she’s the only person who knows where it ends.””

Jason stood.

“We can’t just confront her.””

“Why?””

“Because she’ll deny everything.””

“She already lies.””

“I know.””

“Then we need proof.””

He nodded slowly.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Jason and I were standing on the same side.

Not as husband and wife.

Not yet.

That trust was broken.

But as two people who loved the same little girl.

“We need to find out what happened to Michael.””

Jason nodded.

“And we need to protect Lily.””

I looked toward the room where she slept.

My daughter.

My beautiful little girl.

The child who had been made to feel unwanted by someone who should have protected her.

I knew one thing.

Diane had spent seven years trying to bury the truth.

But now the truth was coming back.

And it was bringing Michael with it.

Before we could leave, my phone buzzed one more time.

Another message.

This one was shorter.

And somehow more frightening.

*Don’t trust Jason completely.*

I froze.

Then another message appeared.

*He didn’t tell you the worst part.*

I looked at my husband.

He was watching me.

“What?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

“Someone says you didn’t tell me the worst part.””

Jason went pale.

Because this time…

He didn’t look confused.

He looked guilty.

And I realized the truth I had been avoiding.

Finding Michael wasn’t the only thing I needed to do.

I needed to find out what Jason was still hiding.

May you like

Because maybe Diane wasn’t the only person who had been controlling the story.

Maybe my husband had been rewriting it too.
