Chapter 8: The Hidden Box Beneath the Floorboards
For the entire ride home, nobody spoke.
Not because we had nothing to say.
Because we had too much.
Claire’s words kept replaying in my mind.
*Andrew left something with you.*
At first, I thought she meant a document.
Maybe a file.
Maybe some kind of evidence hidden somewhere in the apartment.
But the more I thought about it, the more confused I became.
Andrew had left almost nothing behind.
When he walked out eight months ago, he packed carefully.
Too carefully.
He didn’t leave clothes.
He didn’t leave personal items.
He didn’t leave anything that would make him look like he planned to return.
At the time, I thought it meant he was done with us.
Now I wondered if it meant something else.
Maybe he had been preparing.
Maybe every move he made had a purpose.
When we reached the apartment, Edward immediately locked the door behind us.
The action seemed simple.
But it reminded me that things had changed.
This wasn't just a family argument anymore.
There was someone else involved.
Someone who had already caused fear in Andrew.
Someone who knew about me.
Evelyn placed her purse on the table and looked at me.
“What do we do now?””
I looked around the apartment.
The same apartment I had been embarrassed for people to see.
The same place I had spent months believing represented my failure.
But suddenly, I saw it differently.
This apartment held everything.
Every memory.
Every struggle.
Every piece of the truth.
If Andrew had hidden something…
it was here.
“I search.””
Edward nodded.
“That’s what I was thinking.””
Evelyn looked worried.
“Search for what?””
I looked at the room.
“I don’t know.””
And that was the problem.
How do you find something when you don't know what it is?
We started with the obvious places.
The closet.
The cabinets.
The drawers.
The old boxes under the bed.
Everything.
But nothing made sense.
Nothing looked hidden.
Nothing looked unusual.
After two hours, I sat down on the couch.
“I don’t understand.””
Edward looked at me.
“What?””
“If Andrew knew something important was here, why wouldn’t he just tell me?””
Edward was quiet for a moment.
Then he answered:
“Because telling you would put you in danger.””
I looked at him.
“Leaving me alone was supposed to protect me?””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“It was supposed to protect the information.””
That hurt.
Because it meant Andrew had made a choice.
He had chosen a secret over his family.
Even if his intentions were different.
The damage was the same.
Then Sophia walked into the room.
“Mom?””
I quickly covered the documents on the table.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
She looked around.
“Are we moving?””
The question caught me off guard.
“Why would you ask that?””
She pointed toward the boxes.
“You’re looking at everything.””
I smiled softly.
“No, honey. We’re just cleaning.””
She accepted the answer.
Children believed adults too easily.
That was why adults had to be careful.
She walked away.
But her question stayed with me.
We had spent months living like we were temporary.
Like our lives were waiting to begin again.
Maybe it was time to stop waiting.
A few minutes later, Toby came into the room.
“Mom?””
“Yes?””
“I found something.””
My heart immediately jumped.
“What?””
He held up an old wooden box.
“I found it behind my bed.””
I looked at Edward.
Then Evelyn.
Because that box had not been there before.
Or at least I had never noticed it.
Toby handed it to me.
It was small.
Old.
Covered in dust.
My hands became cold.
Because I recognized it.
It was Andrew’s.
I hadn't seen it in years.
“Where did you get this?””
Toby shrugged.
“It was stuck behind the wall.””
Behind the wall.
The words echoed in my mind.
Edward immediately stood.
“Behind the wall?””
Toby nodded.
“There was a loose piece near the floor.””
My heart started beating faster.
I looked at the box.
Why would Andrew hide something behind the wall?
Why here?
Why in the children’s room?
I opened it carefully.
Inside was nothing.
At first.
Just an old photograph.
A picture of our family from years ago.
Before everything changed.
Andrew was smiling.
His arm around me.
Toby was a baby.
Sophia hadn't even been born yet.
For a second, I almost closed the box.
Almost believed it was just sentimental.
Then I noticed something.
The photograph was covering something underneath.
A small envelope.
My fingers trembled as I pulled it out.
No name.
No label.
Just one word written on the front.
*Emma.*
Everyone became silent.
I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
My heart stopped when I saw Andrew’s handwriting.
*If you are reading this, then I failed to fix it before they found out.*
I sat down.
The room felt like it was spinning.
I continued.
*Emma, I know you will be angry. You should be.*
I looked away for a second.
Because those words hurt more than excuses would have.
He knew.
He knew exactly what he had done.
*I wanted to tell you the truth, but every time I tried, I saw what it would do to you and the kids.*
I swallowed.
Edward read over my shoulder.
*The $20,000 was wrong. I know that. I made a choice I regret every day. But the money was not for me.*
I looked at the flash drive.
*Everything you need to know is on this drive.*
Then the final sentence.
The one that changed everything.
*If Michael finds this before you do, he will destroy the only evidence that can expose him.*
Nobody spoke.
The name sat there.
Michael.
The person Claire warned us about.
The person connected to Andrew’s company.
The person who apparently knew about the evidence.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
“My son knew.””
I looked at her.
“He knew everything was dangerous.””
She nodded slowly.
“But he still left.””
Yes.
That was the part nobody could ignore.
Even if Andrew was telling the truth.
Even if he was trying to protect us.
He still made the decision alone.
He still abandoned us.
Edward picked up the flash drive.
“We need to see what’s on this.””
I nodded.
But before we could plug it in, my phone rang.
Again.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
Not this time.
We all knew.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice.
Not Andrew.
Not Claire.
Someone else.
“Emma Carter?””
My body went tense.
“Yes.””
“My name is Michael Lawson.””
The room went silent.
The person we had been discussing.
The person behind everything.
Was calling me.
“I think we need to talk.””
I said nothing.
Michael continued.
“You have something that belongs to Andrew.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“How do you know?””
A small laugh.
Not friendly.
Not warm.
The kind of laugh that made my skin crawl.
“Because Andrew always believed he could hide things.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?””
“What everyone wants.””
“Which is?””
“The truth.””
I almost laughed.
After everything, everyone claimed they wanted the truth.
But everyone wanted a different version of it.
“You know where I live.””
It wasn't a question.
Michael didn't deny it.
“I know many things.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Andrew put you in a difficult position.””
I looked at Edward.
He immediately shook his head, telling me not to reveal anything.
“I don't know what you’re talking about.””
Michael paused.
“You’re a terrible liar, Emma.””
My heart raced.
“You don’t know me.””
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“But I know Andrew.””
That sentence frightened me.
Because it sounded like he knew Andrew better than I did.
“You should give me the drive.””
I said nothing.
“Emma.””
The way he said my name made me uncomfortable.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””
“Then explain.””
A pause.
Then:
“If you open that drive, you won’t just destroy Andrew.””
My breathing stopped.
“You’ll destroy yourself.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Edward spoke.
“He knows.””
I looked at the flash drive.
At the small piece of plastic that suddenly felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
“What do we do?””
Edward looked at me.
The answer came immediately.
“We find out what Andrew was hiding.””
I nodded.
Because for the first time, I wasn't searching for the husband who left me.
I was searching for the truth he left behind.
And whatever was on that drive…
was powerful enough to make a dangerous man afraid.
But there was one thing Michael didn't understand.
He thought fear would make me give up.
He thought I was still the woman Andrew left behind.
The woman who stayed silent.
The woman who waited.
He was wrong.
May you like
Because eight months of surviving had changed me.
And now I was ready to know everything.
