Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Andrew’s Darkest Secret

I spent the entire night awake.

Not because I was afraid.

Not exactly.

It was because every piece of my life with Andrew suddenly felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

For eight months, I had believed I understood the story.

My husband became selfish.

My husband made mistakes.

My husband abandoned his family.

It was a painful story.

But it was simple.

And sometimes simple pain is easier to carry than complicated truth.

Now everything had changed.

The receipt.

The lawsuit.

The woman in the photograph.

The mysterious note from Andrew.

The warning that someone was watching.

Every answer created three more questions.

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the darkness outside the window.

The city never truly slept.

Cars moved below.

People walked home.

Lights turned on and off in apartment buildings across the street.

Everyone had their own problems.

Their own secrets.

Their own stories.

And somewhere out there was Andrew.

The man I married.

The father of my children.

The person who hurt me more than anyone else.

But maybe also someone who was hiding from something dangerous.

I hated that I cared.

I hated that part of me still worried about him.

Because he didn't deserve my concern.

Not after everything.

But love doesn't disappear just because someone hurts you.

Sometimes it becomes something painful.

Something you wish you could turn off.

Around 6 a.m., I finally heard movement from the living room.

Edward was already awake.

Of course he was.

He looked like someone who had spent the entire night analyzing every possibility.

“Any sleep?”” he asked.

I shook my head.

“Not really.””

He nodded.

“Neither did I.””

Evelyn appeared a few minutes later.

She looked even more tired than yesterday.

But something had changed in her expression.

She was no longer only a mother protecting her son.

She was someone searching for the truth.

“Claire is meeting us today?””

I nodded.

“At ten.””

Edward looked concerned.

“Where?””

“She chose the location.””

“And you agreed?””

I looked at him.

“She’s the only person who might know what’s happening.””

Edward didn't argue.

Because he knew I was right.

We needed answers.

Not guesses.

Not assumptions.

Answers.

Before leaving, I checked on Toby and Sophia.

They were still asleep.

I stood there for a moment, watching them.

Their faces were peaceful.

They didn't know about the adults fighting around them.

They didn't know about money problems.

They didn't know about lawsuits.

They only knew their father wasn't home.

And I promised myself something.

No matter what happened next…

I would protect them.

Even if that meant protecting them from Andrew.

The meeting place was a quiet coffee shop on the other side of Manhattan.

Not crowded.

Not private.

Exactly the kind of place someone would choose if they wanted to talk without attracting attention.

Claire was already there.

The moment I saw her, I recognized her from the photograph.

She looked different in person.

Less intimidating.

More tired.

She wasn't the glamorous woman from the picture.

She looked like someone carrying her own burden.

When she saw us, she stood.

“Emma?””

I nodded.

“This is Edward and Evelyn.””

Claire looked at Evelyn carefully.

“Andrew’s parents.””

Evelyn’s expression remained guarded.

“Yes.””

Nobody smiled.

Nobody pretended this was a normal meeting.

Because it wasn't.

We sat down.

Claire folded her hands around her coffee cup.

“I know this is difficult.””

I looked at her.

“You have no idea.””

She accepted that.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

Most people defended themselves immediately.

Claire didn't.

“I should have contacted you sooner.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Sor why didn’t you?””

She looked down.

“Because Andrew asked me not to.””

A bitter feeling rose inside me.

Of course.

Andrew.

Always controlling information.

Always deciding what people knew.

“Why would he ask you not to?””

Claire looked at Edward.

Then Evelyn.

Then finally me.

“Because he believed he could fix everything before you found out.””

I almost laughed.

“Fix everything?””

My voice became sharper.

“He left us.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“You know the business side.””

I pointed toward myself.

“I know what happened at home.””

Claire looked hurt.

But she didn't argue.

“You’re right.””

Again.

That answer caught me off guard.

“I’m not here to defend Andrew.””

She paused.

“I’m here because someone needs to tell you the truth.””

Edward leaned forward.

“Then start.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Andrew did take money.””

My heart sank.

Even though I already knew, hearing someone else say it made it real.

“But he didn't take it for luxury.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

Claire looked around before answering.

“Because he was trying to buy time.””

“Time for what?””

She hesitated.

“Before I answer that, you need to understand what happened with the company.””

She opened her bag and removed a folder.

Inside were documents.

Not copies.

Originals.

She pushed them toward us.

“Andrew’s company wasn't failing because of bad decisions.””

Edward looked at the papers.

“What are you saying?””

Claire lowered her voice.

“Someone was manipulating the company from inside.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“I don’t know for certain.””

That frustrated me.

“But I have suspicions.””

“About who?””

Claire looked directly at me.

“Someone close to Andrew.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

She looked away.

“His business partner.””

I froze.

“Andrew had a partner?””

“Yes.””

I felt confused.

“He never mentioned one.””

“That was intentional.””

Edward looked through the documents.

“Why hide a partner?””

Claire answered:

“Because the partner didn't want people knowing how much control he had.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What is his name?””

Claire hesitated.

Then said:

“Michael Lawson.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it clearly meant something to Edward.

His expression changed.

“You know him?””

Everyone looked at Edward.

He slowly placed the paper down.

“I know of him.””

“What does that mean?”” Evelyn asked.

Edward looked serious.

“Years ago, he was involved in several failed investment projects.””

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.””

I looked at her.

“Then why would Andrew work with him?””

Claire’s expression became complicated.

“Because Andrew believed he could outsmart him.””

I almost smiled.

Because that sounded exactly like Andrew.

He always believed he could handle everything.

He always believed he was smarter than the problem.

Until the problem became too big.

“What did Michael do?””

Claire took a breath.

“He convinced Andrew to make certain financial moves.””

“What kind of moves?””

“Moves that made the company appear healthier than it was.””

Edward’s face hardened.

“Financial deception.””

Claire nodded.

“But Andrew didn't know everything at first.””

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe he was innocent?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

That surprised me.

“I believe Andrew made mistakes.””

She looked at the table.

“But I also believe he realized too late that he was involved in something much bigger.””

I looked at the receipt.

“The $20,000.””

Claire nodded.

“That money.””

“Was it used to cover up something?””

“No.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

Claire looked at me.

“It was used to collect evidence.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

“Andrew discovered what Michael was doing.””

She opened another document.

“He needed access to certain records.””

“And he used our money?””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“So he still chose to risk us.””

Claire didn't defend him.

“Yes.””

The honesty stopped me.

“He made a terrible decision.””

She looked at me.

“He believed he could fix it quickly.””

I looked away.

“That doesn’t make it okay.””

“No.””

Claire’s voice softened.

“It doesn’t.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn asked the question we all wanted answered.

“Why did he leave?””

Claire looked at her.

“Because Michael found out.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

“About eight months ago.””

My heart stopped.

The same time.

The exact same time.

Claire continued.

“Andrew realized someone was watching him.””

“And instead of coming home?”” I asked.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“He thought staying away would keep you safe.””

I felt anger rise again.

“Safe?””

My voice shook.

“He abandoned us to protect us?””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like another excuse.””

Claire nodded.

“Maybe it is.””

That answer surprised me.

She looked exhausted.

“Maybe Andrew convinced himself he was protecting you because admitting he was afraid was harder.””

Those words hit me.

Because maybe that was the truth.

Maybe Andrew wasn't only selfish.

Maybe he was also weak.

And weakness could hurt people just as much as cruelty.

Edward looked at Claire.

“What happens now?””

Claire became serious.

“Now Michael knows someone has been asking questions.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“You.””

The coffee shop suddenly felt colder.

“Why would he care about me?””

Claire answered quietly:

“Because you have the one thing Andrew needs.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“The original records.””

I froze.

“What records?””

Claire looked at me.

“The ones Andrew hid before he left.””

I shook my head.

“I don't have anything like that.””

Claire studied my face.

Then slowly said:

“Emma.””

A pause.

“Andrew didn't leave without a reason.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you saying?””

She leaned closer.

“He left something with you.””

I felt the air disappear from my lungs.

Something.

A hidden message.

A document.

Evidence.

Something Andrew knew I would eventually find.

Claire whispered:

“And he was waiting for you to discover it.””

I looked at Edward.

Then Evelyn.

Neither of them spoke.

Because suddenly we all understood the same thing.

Andrew didn't just disappear.

He planted something.

Something important enough to risk everything.

And if Michael was searching for it…

then finding it first wasn't just about proving Andrew’s innocence.

It was about protecting our family.

May you like

Because whatever Andrew left behind…

was the reason someone was willing to destroy everything to find it.
