Chapter 6: The Secret Claire Was Hiding
I agreed to meet Claire the next morning.
Not because I trusted her.
I didn’t.
Not anymore.
But because curiosity is powerful.
Especially when someone who spent months pretending everything was perfect suddenly admits there is something hidden underneath.
We met at a quiet café across town.
Claire arrived ten minutes late.
That didn’t surprise me.
She always entered rooms like people were waiting for her.
She sat down and placed her purse beside her.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then:
“I owe you an apology.””
I looked at her.
“Do you?””
Her face tightened.
“Yes.””
I waited.
She looked uncomfortable.
“I should have stopped your mother.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“I thought she was just being difficult.””
“She destroyed my clothes.””
“I know.””
“No, Claire.””
My voice was calm.
“You knew.””
She looked down.
And that was the first honest reaction I had seen from her.
“I knew she was harsh.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
She sighed.
“You’re right.””
For a moment, I saw something different.
Not the confident woman who always had the perfect smile.
A woman who looked scared.
“What is this really about?”” I asked.
She took a deep breath.
Then she said:
“The wedding wasn’t actually paid for by your parents.””
I stared at her.
“I know.””
Her eyes widened.
“You know?””
“I paid for it.””
She looked shocked.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She shook her head slowly.
“I didn’t know.””
I studied her face.
Was she lying?
Maybe.
But something about her reaction felt real.
Then she opened her purse.
She pulled out an envelope.
“I found this yesterday.””
She pushed it across the table.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A bank statement.
And a document with my mother’s name on it.
My heart started beating faster.
“What is this?””
Claire looked at me.
“This is why your mother was desperate.””
I read the document.
And slowly, the room seemed to disappear.
Because the wedding wasn’t just about money.
It was about something much bigger.
My mother had been hiding a secret.
A secret that could destroy the image of our perfect family forever.
I looked up.
“What did she do?””
Claire hesitated.
Then whispered:
“She lied to everyone.””
I stared at the papers.
“About what?””
Claire looked toward the window.
Then back at me.
“About who was really paying for this wedding.””
I felt a cold feeling move through me.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The pressure.
The obsession with appearances.
The desperation.
My mother wasn’t just afraid of losing a wedding.
She was afraid of losing the story she had spent years telling everyone.
And now I finally understood.
The destroyed clothes.
The insults.
The humiliation.
None of it was random.
It was a distraction.
My mother wasn’t trying to control what I wore.
She was trying to control what people would see.
I folded the papers carefully.
“Tell me everything.””
Claire looked nervous.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She leaned forward.
“Then you need to know what happened three months ago.””
I held my breath.
“What happened?””
Claire looked me directly in the eyes.
“Your mother didn’t just borrow money for the wedding.””
May you like
A pause.
“She used your name.””
