Chapter 7: Vanessa's Confession
Nobody moved.
Vanessa stood on the staircase with the pistol pointed toward the floor, her fingers trembling around the handle.
Agent Hayes slowly raised one hand.
“Vanessa, put the weapon down.””
Vanessa laughed.
It was a small, broken sound.
“You people always say that. Put the weapon down. Tell the truth.
Cooperate. As if any of those things ever protected anyone.””
“Vanessa,” I said carefully.
“Look at me.””
Her eyes shifted toward mine.
“Please don't do this.””
“You don't get to ask me for anything.””
“I know.””
“You helped my husband steal money from abused women.””
“I know.””
“You stood beside him while he slapped me.””
Her face tightened.
“I know, Elena.””
“Then why should I believe anything you say?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“Because he knows what happened to your father. And he's going to let you believe whatever version keeps him out of prison.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Vanessa, put that ridiculous thing away.””
She raised the pistol.
“Don't.””
His mouth closed.
Agent Hayes moved slightly to the left, positioning herself between Adrian and the staircase.
“Vanessa, we can protect you if you cooperate.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Protect me? Where were you eight years ago?””
She looked at me.
“Do you remember the Carlisle family charity dinner? The one where Adrian introduced us?””
I nodded slowly.
“I remember.””
“I was engaged to him.””
“I know that now.””
Vanessa gave a bitter smile.
“Then you know my father had arranged our marriage. He owned three medical supply companies. Adrian wanted access to them because they were moving money through international accounts.””
She descended one step.
“When I discovered what was happening, I confronted Adrian. He told me the transfers were legitimate. I believed him for six months.””
“And then?””
“Then I found invoices for emergency shelters that didn't exist. I found payments to companies with fake employees. I found the names of women who had been denied assistance because their accounts were supposedly empty.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why didn't you report it?””
“I did.””
She swallowed.
“I gave the documents to my father.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked toward Adrian.
“He told me to forget what I'd seen.””
Adrian scoffed.
“Your father was a coward.””
Vanessa's hand shook.
“My father disappeared three weeks later.””
The room went silent.
“What?”” I whispered.
“He was supposed to fly to London. His car was found near the airport. No body.
No explanation. Thomas told me he'd run away because of his debts.””
She laughed again.
“I believed that too. Until I found his last voicemail.””
She reached into the pocket of her dress and removed a small digital recorder.
Agent Hayes looked at it.
“Is that the recording you mentioned?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My father left it on my answering machine the night he disappeared.””
She pressed play.
A man's voice crackled through the speaker.
“Vanessa, sweetheart, listen carefully. I was wrong about Thomas. He knows about the transfers.
He knows about the trust. And Adrian is not the person making the decisions.””
A pause.
“If anything happens to me, find Catherine. She knows what they did to Daniel.””
The recording ended.
I felt my throat tighten.
Catherine.
My mother.
Vanessa looked at me.
“After your wedding, Adrian told me the marriage was part of the arrangement. He said you had inherited control of the trust, but you didn't know it. He needed to keep you close until the assets could be transferred.””
I stared at Adrian.
“Was that why you never let me have my own attorney?””
He didn't answer.
“Was that why you insisted every financial document went through your office?””
Still nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“I stayed because Adrian promised me he would help find my father. He said Thomas had information. But every time I tried to leave, he threatened me.””
She pulled back her sleeve.
A thin scar crossed her wrist.
“He said accidents happened to women who talked too much.””
I looked at the pistol.
“Is that why you brought that?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. I brought it because I knew he would try to kill me tonight.””
Adrian exploded.
“You're insane!””
He lunged toward the staircase.
Agent Hayes shouted, “STOP!””
Vanessa raised the gun.
A shot rang out.
I screamed.
Adrian stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder.
His whiskey glass shattered against the fireplace.
Two investigators rushed forward.
Agent Hayes moved toward Vanessa.
“Drop it! Now!””
Vanessa let the pistol fall.
It struck the marble floor.
She collapsed onto the stairs, sobbing.
Adrian dropped to one knee.
“You shot me!””
Vanessa stared at him.
“No,” she whispered.
“I missed.””
Agent Hayes restrained her while another investigator called for medical assistance.
I stood motionless.
Then I noticed something on the floor near Adrian's shoe.
A folded piece of paper had fallen from his jacket.
I picked it up.
It was a hotel reservation.
Two rooms.
One registered under Adrian Whitmore.
The other under Catherine Reed.
The reservation date was tomorrow.
I looked at him.
“Why does my husband have a hotel reservation under my mother's name?””
Adrian pressed his hand against his shoulder.
His face twisted with pain.
“Ask Vanessa.””
Vanessa lifted her head.
“I didn't make that reservation.””
I looked at the date again.
Tomorrow.
My mother had contacted me less than an hour ago.
She had said she was afraid.
Now I understood why.
Agent Hayes took the reservation.
“Where is this hotel?””
I read the address.
It was downtown.
A luxury hotel only fifteen minutes from the estate.
Agent Hayes immediately radioed her team.
“Possible target at the Meridian Hotel. We need a protective detail dispatched immediately.””
Then my phone rang.
The screen displayed an unknown number.
I answered.
“Elena?””
It was Catherine.
Her voice was shaking.
“Sweetheart, I need you to listen.””
“Mom, where are you?””
“I'm safe for now.””
“Adrian has a hotel reservation under your name.””
A sharp breath.
“Oh, God.””
“Why?””
Catherine began crying.
“Because Thomas told him I was going to meet you.””
I looked toward the staircase.
Vanessa was staring at me.
Then Catherine whispered something I would never forget.
“Elena, Thomas isn't trying to kill me.””
I frowned.
“Then what does he want?””
“He wants me to tell you the truth about your birth.””
A pause.
“And the truth is that Daniel didn't raise you because he loved your mother.””
My stomach dropped.
“He raised you because he promised her he would protect you from your real father.””
I looked at the birth certificate in my hand.
“Mom, what are you saying?””
Catherine's voice broke.
“Thomas Reed isn't your biological father, Elena.””
I stopped breathing.
“He isn't?””
“No.””
“Then who is?””
A long silence.
Then she answered.
“Your real father is Richard Bennett.””
The call disconnected.
I slowly turned toward the hallway.
Richard Bennett.
The foundation donor who had stood up when Adrian slapped me.
The man who had defended me.
The man who had told me he suspected financial fraud.
The man who had attended my wedding.
He had been in my life for years.
And now, apparently, he was my father.
But why had Daniel hidden the truth?
And why had Thomas spent twenty-three years pretending otherwise?
Before I could ask another question, Agent Hayes received a radio transmission.
Her expression changed.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
She looked at me.
“Mrs. Whitmore, we have a serious problem.””
“What?””
“Richard Bennett just arrived at the estate.””
May you like
She paused.
“And he says he has proof that Catherine Reed died twenty-three years ago.””
