Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Hospital Records
I couldn't move.
The envelope lay on the desk like a threat.
My mother had been dead for twenty-three years.
I had attended a memorial service when I was too young to remember it. I had grown up with a framed photograph of her beside my bed.
Her name was Catherine.
She had dark hair, green eyes, and a smile that looked remarkably like mine.
And now someone was claiming she was alive.
Agent Hayes approached the envelope.
“Don't touch it.””
She examined the paper before carefully opening it with gloved hands.
Inside was a single photograph.
A woman stood outside a pharmacy.
She wore a beige coat and carried a shopping bag.
Her hair was shorter, streaked with gray.
But her face…
I recognized it.
I had seen that face in hundreds of photographs.
My knees weakened.
“That's my mother.””
Agent Hayes studied the picture.
“Are you certain?””
“Yes.””
A handwritten note was attached to the back.
She's been living under another name. Ask Thomas Reed why.
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Find him.””
Agent Hayes immediately contacted her team.
“We need Thomas Reed located. Treat him as a person of interest in the Whitmore investigation.””
Margaret began shaking her head.
“He'll never tell you.””
I turned.
“Why?””
“Because he has spent twenty-three years making sure nobody discovers what happened.””
I stared at her.
“Did you help him?””
Margaret flinched.
“Once.””
The admission landed harder than I expected.
“What did you do?””
She sat down again.
“Three days after your mother disappeared from the hospital records, Thomas came to Daniel's house. He said Catherine had been transferred to a private facility.””
“Which facility?””
“He wouldn't say.””
“And Daniel believed him?””
“No. Daniel hired someone to investigate. But every lead ended in a dead end.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn't he go to the police?””
“He tried. The records had already been altered. There was no evidence Catherine had ever left the hospital.””
Agent Hayes looked at Margaret.
“Do you remember the name of the hospital?””
“St. Mary's Medical Center.””
I looked at her.
“That's where I was born.””
Margaret nodded.
I turned toward Agent Hayes.
“Can we go there?””
“We can, but first I need to secure this house and the evidence.””
I looked at the photograph again.
The woman outside the pharmacy was older, but unmistakably Catherine.
For twenty-three years, I had believed I was an orphan.
Now I wondered whether my mother had been searching for me all along.
My phone rang.
The caller ID displayed an unfamiliar number.
Agent Hayes motioned for me to answer on speaker.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
“Elena?””
I stopped breathing.
“Yes?””
A pause.
Then the voice whispered, “It's Catherine.””
My hand flew to my mouth.
Agent Hayes immediately gestured for me to remain calm.
“Where are you?””
“I can't tell you that.””
“Are you really my mother?””
A shaky breath.
“I've watched you grow up from a distance.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“Why didn't you come back?””
Silence.
Then she said, “Because Thomas told me you were dead.””
My knees nearly gave way.
“What?””
“He said you died shortly after birth. He showed me a photograph of a tiny coffin. I believed him.””
I couldn't speak.
She continued.
“Daniel found out what happened. He tried to bring me home, but Thomas threatened to have him arrested for kidnapping.””
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he had papers proving Daniel wasn't your biological father. He said he would destroy Daniel's reputation and make sure you were raised by strangers.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did Adrian know?””
The line went silent.
Then Catherine whispered, “Adrian is the reason I called.””
Agent Hayes leaned closer.
“What do you know about Adrian Whitmore?””
Catherine's voice became urgent.
“He wasn't supposed to marry you.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“He was supposed to marry another woman. A woman who disappeared after discovering what Thomas and Adrian were doing.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“Vanessa Carlisle.””
I stared at the phone.
“That makes no sense. Vanessa is Adrian's mistress.””
“Because she was never meant to be his mistress.””
I looked at Agent Hayes.
Catherine continued.
“Vanessa was engaged to Adrian before you met him. Their families arranged everything. But she discovered that he was using her father's company to move money.””
“Then why is she with him now?””
“Because she knows what happens to people who walk away.””
I remembered Vanessa's expression in the ballroom.
The fear.
The trembling hands.
For the first time, I wondered whether her performance had been more complicated than simple jealousy.
“Where are you?”” I asked again.
“I'll send you an address. Come alone.””
“No. That's not happening.””
“Please, Elena. If Thomas knows I'm speaking to you, he'll disappear.””
Agent Hayes shook her head and mouthed, Don't agree.
I swallowed.
“Mom, I need you to listen. I'm with federal investigators. You're not alone anymore.””
Catherine began crying.
“Then you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Daniel didn't die because of the money.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“He discovered who ordered the attack on me. He knew who had changed the hospital records.””
“Who?””
Catherine's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Your husband.””
My stomach turned.
“He was involved before I even met him?””
“Yes.””
“How old was he?””
“Twenty-seven. Thomas had been training him for years.””
I felt sick.
Then Catherine said something that made Agent Hayes straighten.
“Daniel left a second set of documents. The first was meant to expose Thomas. The second was meant to expose Adrian.””
“Where?””
“Inside the original foundation charter.””
I looked toward the black metal box.
The charter wasn't there.
“Where can I find it?””
“In the Whitmore family estate. Behind the portrait of Adrian's grandfather.””
Agent Hayes shook her head.
“That's private property. We'll need to secure a warrant.””
Catherine's voice grew frantic.
“Elena, listen. Don't let Adrian convince you that Vanessa is the mastermind. She isn't.””
“Then who is?””
A long pause.
Then Catherine answered.
“Thomas.””
The call disconnected.
I stared at the screen.
Agent Hayes immediately began issuing instructions.
“We're moving to secure the Whitmore estate. Nobody goes anywhere alone.””
But before she could finish, an investigator hurried into the study.
“Agent Hayes, we've got a problem.””
“What?””
“Mr. Whitmore has been released.””
She frowned.
“Released by whom?””
“The local prosecutor. The assault incident and financial investigation are being handled separately, and there's not enough evidence for immediate detention.””
I stared at him.
“He's free?””
The investigator nodded.
Agent Hayes swore under her breath.
My phone vibrated.
A new message.
*You should have stayed quiet at the gala.*
Then another.
*Come home, Elena. We need to discuss your inheritance.*
I looked up.
Agent Hayes read the messages.
“Don't respond.””
But I was already staring at one particular word.
Inheritance.
My father had left me money.
The account had been opened in my name twenty-three years ago.
Adrian had married me eight years ago.
And someone had spent years moving millions through accounts connected to my identity.
Suddenly, I understood.
They didn't just need my signature.
May you like
They needed me alive.
And if the documents were real, they might need me to remain married to Adrian.
