Chapter 7: The Boy Who Inherited a Stranger's Fortune

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood Daniel.

I stared at him, waiting for him to laugh, to explain that he had chosen the wrong words.

He didn't.

“Say that again,” I whispered.

Daniel shifted painfully against the couch.

“Noah was registered under a different legal arrangement before he was born.””

I looked at our son.

He was sitting beside Hammer, holding the little blue bracelet between his fingers.

“Daniel, what are you talking about?””

Daniel glanced at Margaret.

She immediately looked away.

That was when I understood.

She knew.

She had known all along.

“Margaret,” I said slowly.

“What does my son have to do with Victor Hale?””

She pressed a tissue against her mouth.

“Emily, please let Daniel explain.””

“No. You've had eight years to explain.””

Daniel reached for the red box.

“Victor's father owned a company called Hale Industrial Holdings. Before he died, he transferred a controlling interest into a family trust.””

“And?””

“The trust was supposed to pass to his only grandchild.””

I stared at him.

“Victor has children?””

“No.””

“Then why would Noah inherit anything?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because Victor's father believed Victor was incapable of running the company honestly. He wanted the next generation to inherit it.””

Hammer leaned forward.

“Danny, stop dancing around it.””

Daniel nodded.

“The original trust named an unborn child. The child was supposed to be mine and yours.””

My stomach dropped.

“That makes no sense.””

“Victor arranged it before Noah was born. He knew I was working with his father. He knew we were expecting a child.””

“Why would he give our baby anything?””

“He didn't. His father did.””

Margaret finally spoke.

“Victor's father was dying. He believed you and Daniel would raise the child to be a decent person. He wanted the family fortune protected from Victor.””

I looked at her.

“And you agreed?””

She nodded.

“I signed documents as a witness.””

Hammer shook his head.

“Without telling Emily?””

Margaret began crying.

“I thought it was the right thing to do.””

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, the street was dark.

Somewhere nearby, a dog barked.

My mind kept returning to one sentence.

Noah was Victor Hale's legal heir.

“Why does Victor want the birth certificate?”” I asked.

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because the original document proves Noah's identity and establishes the conditions of the trust.””

“Conditions?””

“He has to be recognized as the legitimate child named in the original agreement. At eight, he becomes eligible for a protected inheritance account. When he turns eighteen, he can assume control.””

Hammer whistled softly.

“How much are we talking about?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Enough to make Victor dangerous.””

“Give me a number.””

“Approximately two hundred and forty million dollars in assets, including company shares and property.””

Walt nearly dropped his phone.

“Jesus Christ.””

I felt sick.

My son had been eating discounted cereal for breakfast while somebody was hiding a fortune that legally belonged to him.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Did you know this when Noah was born?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me raise him without knowing?””

Daniel lowered his head.

“I thought if I disappeared, Victor would stop looking.””

“Clearly, he didn't.””

“No.””

I walked closer.

“You let me believe I was a widow. You let your mother lie to me. You let someone monitor my bank accounts and follow my child.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

He looked up.

“Emily, I was trying to keep you alive.””

“And what about living? Did you ever consider that?””

He had no answer.

Noah suddenly climbed down from the chair.

“Mom?””

I turned.

He held up the blue bracelet.

“Can I keep this?””

I crouched.

“Of course.””

“Is it Daddy's?””

Daniel nodded.

“It belonged to my brother first. Grandpa gave us matching ones.””

Noah studied the bracelet.

“Does that mean I'm rich?””

Nobody laughed.

I brushed his hair away from his forehead.

“It means you're still eight years old, and you still have homework to finish.””

He smiled faintly.

Then he looked toward Daniel.

“Does the money mean you can come to my school?””

Daniel's expression broke.

“If you'll let me, buddy.””

Noah considered that.

“Maybe.””

It was the first honest answer anyone had given Daniel all night.

Hammer placed a protective hand on Noah's shoulder.

“That's a good answer, kid.””

Walt returned from the kitchen.

“We have a problem.””

Hammer stood.

“What now?””

“I checked the security footage from the garage. Those men weren't just trying to steal the box.””

He placed his phone on the table.

The video showed a man standing outside Daniel's old repair shop.

He was holding a photograph.

The camera zoomed in.

It was a picture of Noah.

Taken at school.

I grabbed the phone.

“When was this?””

“Yesterday afternoon.””

I recognized the playground in the background.

Noah's school.

The man in the video turned toward the camera.

His face was partially hidden by a baseball cap.

Then he lifted his hand.

A small red object dangled between his fingers.

A child's identification bracelet.

My blood turned cold.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.””

“What?”” Hammer demanded.

Daniel pointed.

“That bracelet.””

I looked closer.

It was the same kind of hospital bracelet Noah had worn when he was born.

But there was something written across it.

Not Noah's name.

A different name.

*ELI HALE.*

I turned toward Daniel.

“Who is Eli Hale?””

Daniel's face went completely blank.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Victor's son.””
