Chapter 12: The Bargain for My Son
The police arrived twelve minutes after we found the empty cabin.
By then, Hammer had already contacted every member of the Iron Haven Riders within fifty miles.
Motorcycles filled the road outside the property.
Men who had been laughing beside their bikes the previous afternoon now stood in complete silence, listening to Hammer explain what had happened.
“Two vehicles,” he said.
“One black SUV, possibly a second car following behind. They took an eight-year-old boy. Nobody approaches Victor Hale without my permission.””
A young biker raised his hand.
“What if we find them?””
Hammer looked at him.
“We bring the boy home. Nobody plays hero.””
The biker nodded.
I stood near the porch, holding Noah's bracelet.
My mother sat beside Patricia while a paramedic treated her head.
Daniel paced in front of the truck.
His injury was bleeding through the bandage again.
I approached him.
“Sit down.””
He shook his head.
“I'm going after him.””
“You're bleeding.””
“My son is missing.””
“And you're not going to help him if you collapse on the highway.””
Daniel stopped.
His eyes were red.
“Emily, I already lost eight years.””
I looked at him.
“You didn't lose them. You chose them.””
He flinched.
I immediately regretted the words.
But I couldn't take them back.
He lowered his head.
“You're right.””
Then he looked at Noah's bracelet in my hand.
“I'll do whatever it takes to bring him home.””
Hammer approached.
“Victor called again?””
I nodded.
“He wants the original hospital file.””
Hammer rubbed his beard.
“Did he give you a location?””
“No. He said he'd contact me.””
My mother stood.
“Emily, you can't give him those documents.””
I turned toward her.
“That's my son.””
“I know.””
“Then you understand why I would give him everything.””
She grabbed my arm.
“Listen to me. Victor doesn't want the documents. He wants to destroy them. If you hand them over, he'll have no reason to keep Noah alive.””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mom, stop.””
My mother looked at him.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“What now?””
She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver key.
“I kept a second copy of the records.””
Hammer took it.
“Where?””
“At the hospital. In a locked archive cabinet.””
I stared at her.
“You had another copy all this time?””
She nodded.
“Your father asked me to keep it safe.””
I shook my head.
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because I was afraid Victor would find it.””
Hammer examined the key.
“Which cabinet?””
“Basement archive. Room fourteen.””
Daniel immediately turned toward the truck.
“We're going.””
I caught his arm.
“No. We go together.””
He looked at me.
“Emily—”
“I am not sitting somewhere while everyone else decides what happens to my child.””
He nodded.
“Okay.””
Hammer called Walt's contact at the police department.
Within twenty minutes, two officers agreed to accompany us to the hospital archives.
The basement smelled of damp paper and disinfectant.
Fluorescent lights flickered overhead.
My mother led us down a narrow corridor.
Room fourteen was at the end.
She inserted the silver key.
The lock turned.
Inside stood several metal filing cabinets.
She walked to the third one.
“Here.””
She opened the bottom drawer and removed a thick folder.
Inside were original documents, including a photograph of the newborn identification bracelets.
I stared at the image.
There were three bracelets.
One marked Noah Carter.
One marked Eli Hale.
And one marked an unknown infant.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What's the third one?””
My mother swallowed.
“That's what I've been trying to explain.””
Hammer pointed to the photograph.
“Whose bracelet is that?””
My mother pulled out another sheet.
It was a medical report.
The third infant had been delivered at the same hospital on the same night.
A baby girl.
The mother's name had been blacked out.
I looked at the report.
“Why is this in Noah's file?””
My mother looked toward the door.
“Because the third baby was part of Victor's arrangement.””
Daniel frowned.
“What arrangement?””
My mother took a trembling breath.
“Victor didn't just want an heir. He wanted to replace his dead son with a living child who could legally inherit.””
Hammer shook his head.
“But Noah was already registered as Daniel's son.””
“Yes,” she said.
“And that made the plan difficult.””
I studied the third record.
“Where is the girl now?””
My mother looked at me.
“I don't know.””
A voice came from behind us.
“I do.””
We turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She was in her early thirties, with dark hair tied back and a hospital identification badge clipped to her jacket.
I recognized her from the photograph.
The same woman who had appeared in the background of the original delivery room records.
She stepped forward.
“My name is Rachel Morris.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Are you related to Dr. Morris?””
“I'm his daughter.””
Hammer moved slightly in front of me.
“Why are you here?””
Rachel looked at the folder.
“Because my father has been hiding the truth for eight years, and I can't let another child pay for it.””
She reached into her bag and removed a small photograph.
It showed a baby girl sleeping in a hospital bassinet.
On the back was a handwritten name.
*LILY MORRIS.*
Rachel's eyes filled.
“That baby was me.””
I stared at her.
“You were the third child?””
She nodded.
“My father told me when I turned eighteen. He said he'd helped Victor falsify records. He also told me there was another baby.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is Dr. Morris?””
“Florida. But he knows Victor has taken Noah.””
“Can you contact him?””
Rachel nodded.
“I already have.””
She showed us her phone.
A message from her father had arrived two minutes earlier.
Rachel, don't let them give Victor the file. The truth is worse than you think.
Then another message appeared.
Noah Carter was not the child selected to inherit the Hale trust.
I felt my stomach drop.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Then who was?””
Rachel looked directly at me.
“Me.””
Nobody moved.
She continued.
“My biological mother was Victor's wife. She died during childbirth. My father raised me under his own name because Victor never wanted a daughter. He wanted a son.””
I looked at the photograph.
The third baby.
The unknown infant.
The child who had somehow disappeared from the records.
“You're saying Victor's real child is alive?””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Hammer looked at her.
“Then why did Victor use Noah's identity?””
“Because the trust named a male grandchild. Victor believed he could make Noah appear to be his son and control the inheritance through him.””
Daniel stared at the documents.
“But if Rachel is Victor's biological daughter, why doesn't he know?””
Rachel gave a bitter smile.
“He knows.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“He has known for years. He just doesn't want anyone else to know.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Then at Rachel.
“Why would he hide his own daughter?””
Rachel's voice trembled.
“Because if the court discovers he concealed his biological child while falsifying another child's identity, he loses everything.””
My phone vibrated.
An incoming video call.
Victor Hale.
I answered.
Noah appeared on the screen.
He was sitting in a chair inside a room with white walls.
His cheeks were wet.
But he was alive.
“Mom!””
I pressed the phone against my chest.
“Baby! Are you hurt?””
Noah shook his head.
“I'm okay.””
Victor appeared behind him.
“Lovely family reunion, isn't it?””
I swallowed.
“Let him go.””
“Bring the original file.””
“I have it.””
Victor smiled.
“Excellent.””
Daniel stepped toward the screen.
“Victor, this ends tonight.””
Victor laughed.
“You still don't understand, Daniel.””
He placed a hand on Noah's shoulder.
“This little boy is the key to everything.””
Rachel moved closer to the phone.
Victor saw her.
His smile disappeared.
For the first time, the powerful businessman looked genuinely frightened.
“Rachel?””
She stared at him.
“Hello, Father.””
Victor's face went white.
The phone shook slightly in my hand.
He looked from Rachel to the documents.
Then he whispered:
“You were supposed to be dead.””
Rachel raised her chin.
“You've said that about enough children.””
Victor stared at her.
Then he slowly smiled again.
“Bring the file to the old Hale estate. Alone, Emily.””
He looked at Noah.
“Or your son learns what happened to the last child who stood between me and my inheritance.””
The screen went black.
I lowered the phone.
Hammer looked at the documents.
Daniel stared at Rachel.
And I finally understood the terrible truth.
Victor hadn't kidnapped Noah because he wanted another heir.
He had kidnapped him because Noah was the only living witness to a crime that could destroy the Hale family.

But Rachel had just returned from the dead, too.
And this time, Victor had two children standing against him.
