Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

I didn't reply immediately.

I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the two messages.

Daniel.

The man from Vanessa's email.

The same man who had laughed at the idea of making me feel too embarrassed to object.

Now he wanted to talk about my money.

I typed a short response.

*Me:* What exactly do you want to discuss?

His reply came almost immediately.

*Daniel:* I think you should know Vanessa has been telling people a different story about the vacation.

I stared at the screen.

*Me:* Which people?

*Daniel:* Friends. People from work. She told us Michael's family was funding the trip, but that she had arranged the luxury upgrades herself.

I leaned back.

That was certainly creative.

*Me:* She didn't arrange the original trip.

*Daniel:* I know. I saw the booking confirmation.

I frowned.

*Me:* How?

There was a pause.

Then:

*Daniel:* She forwarded it to me when she was asking about additional activities. Your name was on the payment confirmation.

I put the phone down.

I wasn't sure whether I wanted to hear more.

But the next message changed that.

*Daniel:* There's something else. She asked me to help her find a way to get the resort to accept your card for the additional charges without needing you to approve every purchase.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I called him.

He answered on the second ring.

"Hello, Carol.""

"Daniel, explain exactly what Vanessa asked you to do.""

He sighed.

"I didn't realize how serious it was at first.""

"That isn't an explanation.""

"You're right. I'm sorry.""

I waited.

He continued.

"About three weeks ago, Vanessa asked me whether the resort could keep a card on file for incidental expenses. She said her mother-in-law had paid for the trip and would probably cover some extras.""

"I didn't authorize extras.""

"I understand that now.""

"What did you tell her?""

"That most resorts require the cardholder's authorization for additional charges, especially if the cardholder isn't physically present.""

I closed my eyes.

"And what did she say?""

"She said she would figure it out.""

I looked at the window.

"Did she ask you to help her use my card without permission?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Not in those exact words.""

"Then what words did she use?""

He took a breath.

"She said you were unlikely to notice a few extra charges because you had already agreed to pay for the vacation.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Did you encourage her?""

"No. I told her that wasn't appropriate.""

"Did you tell Michael?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"I didn't think it was my place.""

I almost laughed.

Apparently, everyone in Vanessa's circle had decided that staying silent was easier than telling the truth.

"Daniel, why are you contacting me now?""

He was quiet for a moment.

"Because I saw what she posted.""

"What did she post?""

"She shared pictures from the airport. She wrote that she and Michael had worked hard for this trip and that some family members didn't understand boundaries.""

I didn't respond.

"Then she told a group of friends that you had offered to pay for the vacation as a gift, but later tried to control everything.""

I stared at the wall.

"She said that?""

"Yes.""

"Did you believe her?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because I saw the original booking.""

I thanked him for telling me.

Before ending the call, he said something that stayed with me.

"Carol, I think you should check the messages between Vanessa and Michael. There may be more than the email you already found.""

I looked toward the phone.

"What do you mean?""

"I can't tell you what to do, but I know she was worried about something before the trip.""

"What?""

He paused.

"She mentioned a financial problem.""

The call ended.

I sat quietly for several minutes.

A financial problem.

I opened my banking app and checked the original transaction.

The vacation payment had been made from my consulting bonus account. Nothing unusual appeared.

Then I opened my email and searched for the booking confirmations.

Everything was there.

Every ticket.

Every receipt.

Every payment.

I saved copies to a separate folder.

Not because I planned to sue anyone.

Because I had learned something important over the past forty-eight hours.

When people begin rewriting history, documentation becomes valuable.

At 3:15 p.m., Michael knocked on my door.

He was holding two iced coffees.

"Peace offering?""

I smiled slightly.

"Come in.""

He placed one on the table.

"Vanessa is furious.""

"I assumed.""

"She says Daniel has no business talking to you.""

I looked up.

"You know about Daniel?""

He nodded.

"She told me he called her.""

I took a sip.

"Did she explain what he told me?""

"She said he was spreading lies.""

"And what do you believe?""

Michael sat down.

"I don't know anymore.""

I studied him.

"That's a difficult place to be.""

He nodded.

Then he looked at the balcony.

"Mom, I found another message.""

I placed my coffee down.

"From Vanessa?""

"Yes.""

He opened his phone.

This time, it wasn't an email.

It was a message exchange between Vanessa and a woman named Lauren.

I recognized the name.

Lauren had been one of Vanessa's bridesmaids.

Michael handed me the phone.

The conversation began several days before our departure.

*Lauren:* Are you excited for Cabo?

*Vanessa:* I was. Now Michael's mother is coming.

*Lauren:* Seriously? Isn't she paying for everything?

*Vanessa:* Exactly. Which is why this is so annoying.

*Lauren:* I don't understand.

*Vanessa:* She thinks paying means she gets to be included. I want the trip to feel like ours.

Then Lauren asked a question.

*Lauren:* Why don't you just tell her you don't want her there?

Vanessa replied:

*Vanessa:* Because then we'd lose the vacation.

I read that sentence twice.

Because then we'd lose the vacation.

Michael looked away.

"There's more," he said.

The next message appeared.

*Vanessa:* We need to get through the first few days. Once we're there, she'll probably pay for the extras if she wants everyone to stop being uncomfortable.

*Lauren:* That seems harsh.

*Vanessa:* She has more money than she knows what to do with. And Michael will convince her. He always does.

I slowly handed the phone back.

Michael's face was pale.

"She planned to use you," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"She planned to use both of us, Michael.""

He covered his eyes.

"I didn't know.""

"I believe you.""

He looked up.

"Do you?""

"Yes. But not knowing doesn't erase what you did when you had the opportunity to speak.""

He nodded.

A long silence followed.

Then he said, "I think I need to talk to her.""

"That's your decision.""

"Not about the money. About everything.""

I touched his arm.

"Then tell her the truth.""

He stood and walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he turned.

"Mom, there's something else.""

I waited.

"Vanessa told me this morning that if I don't make you restore the payment method, she wants to leave Cabo.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"She wants to leave?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"She says she can't enjoy a vacation where she has to worry about every dollar.""

I nodded.

"Then perhaps she should decide what she can afford.""

Michael looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said, "I think she's going to do something drastic.""

He left.

I returned to the balcony.

The ocean was turning gold in the late afternoon light.

I had come to Cabo expecting sunshine, books, and a little peace.

Instead, I had discovered that my daughter-in-law had been discussing my money with her friends before the plane even left Denver.

I wasn't sure what else there was to uncover.

But I knew I wouldn't be paying another dollar without knowing exactly where it was going.

At 6:08 p.m., someone knocked again.

This time, it wasn't Michael.

It was Vanessa.

She stood outside holding a folder.

Her eyes were red, but her expression was furious.

"Carol, we need to settle this tonight.""

I stepped into the doorway.

"What needs settling?""

She pushed the folder toward me.

"Michael has decided he isn't going to help me. So I'm going to show you something he doesn't want you to see.""

I didn't take the folder.

"What's inside?""

She leaned closer.

"Proof that you weren't the only person who paid for this vacation.""

I stared at her.

Then she opened the folder and pulled out a bank statement.

At the top was Michael's name.

And beneath it was a transaction that made me stop breathing for a moment.

*$6,500 — TRANSFER TO VANESSA.*

The date was three weeks before our departure.

I looked up.

"Vanessa, what is this money for?""

She smiled without warmth.

"That's exactly what I think you should ask your son.""

May you like

And before I could say another word, she added:

"Because Michael has been lying to you, too.""
