Chapter 4: The $18,000 Lie

"No," I told the resort manager.

"I did not authorize Vanessa to use my credit card for anything beyond the original reservations.""

There was a brief silence.

"Thank you for clarifying, Mrs. Anderson. I'll place the requested charges on hold while our accounting department reviews the account.""

"May I ask exactly what she requested?""

"Certainly. There are several additional purchases, including a premium cabana package, spa services, a private yacht excursion, and an upgraded dining arrangement.""

I looked at Michael.

He was staring at the floor.

"How much are we talking about?""

"The total requested authorization is approximately $18,000.""

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Eighteen thousand dollars.

On top of the twelve thousand I had already spent.

"Please don't process anything without my written authorization.""

"Of course, ma'am.""

"Thank you.""

I ended the call.

Michael remained motionless.

I placed my phone on the desk.

"Would you like to explain?""

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"Mom, I didn't know she was going to do that.""

"Do what?""

"Ask them to charge everything to your card.""

"How did she get the idea that she could?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"She thought the original card was still attached to the reservation.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

He sat on the edge of the chair.

"Vanessa said the resort told her they could restore the original payment method if the cardholder approved it.""

"Did she tell them I had already approved it?""

He didn't answer.

I walked to the balcony and opened the curtains.

The morning sun was rising over the ocean. A maintenance worker was arranging white towels beside the pool. Somewhere below, a waiter was setting tables for breakfast.

It was an ordinary, beautiful morning.

Yet my son was sitting in my room trying to explain why his wife believed she could spend another $18,000 of my money.

"Michael.""

He looked up.

"Did you know about the yacht?""

"No.""

"The cabana?""

"No.""

"The spa services?""

He hesitated.

"I knew she wanted to book a few things.""

"Did you think I was paying?""

He looked down.

"I thought we'd figure it out.""

I turned around.

"That's not an answer.""

He stood.

"Okay. Yes. I thought you might help.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"After what happened yesterday?""

"Mom, I know. I know how it sounds.""

"Then why didn't you stop her?""

He paced toward the balcony.

"Because everything becomes an argument with Vanessa. If I tell her no, she says I'm embarrassing her. If I disagree with her, she tells me I never stand up for her.""

"And when she humiliates me?""

He stopped.

I continued.

"Does she ever worry about embarrassing me?""

Michael didn't answer.

I picked up the printed statement.

"Where did this eighteen thousand dollars come from?""

He looked at the paper.

"Vanessa made a list of things she wanted to add.""

"Why?""

"She said since the original vacation had been paid for, we could use the money we would have spent on other things for upgrades.""

I stared at him.

"Michael, the original vacation was already twelve thousand dollars.""

"I know.""

"And she thought another eighteen thousand would simply appear?""

He swallowed.

"She thought you'd be willing to cover it.""

I placed the paper on the desk.

"Then she was mistaken.""

At that moment, someone knocked.

Vanessa walked in without waiting for an invitation.

She was wearing a white linen dress, gold earrings, and oversized sunglasses.

She looked ready for a magazine photograph.

"Good. You're both here.""

Michael turned.

"Vanessa, we need to talk.""

She waved him away.

"I already spoke to the front desk. They said there's a misunderstanding with the payment information.""

I folded my arms.

"There is no misunderstanding.""

She looked at me.

"Carol, the resort has already been paid. You're making this unnecessarily complicated.""

"The resort has not been fully paid.""

"Well, you booked it.""

"I did.""

"So why are you suddenly acting like you have nothing to do with it?""

I stared at her.

"Because I don't authorize you to spend another $18,000.""

She blinked.

"Nobody said eighteen thousand.""

I held up the statement.

"Would you like to read it?""

She glanced at the paper.

Then she shrugged.

"Those are optional experiences. We haven't decided which ones we're doing.""

"Yet you asked the resort to restore my payment method.""

"I assumed you wouldn't mind.""

"Why?""

She gave me an irritated look.

"Because you've already spent so much money. I thought you wanted us to have a wonderful anniversary.""

I nodded slowly.

"That's an interesting explanation.""

She sat down.

"Look, I know yesterday was awkward. I shouldn't have said some things at the airport.""

"Some things?""

She sighed.

"Fine. I was rude. Are you happy?""

"No.""

Her eyebrows rose.

"What do you want from me?""

"Nothing.""

"Then what's the problem?""

I walked toward the desk.

"The problem is that you continue to treat my generosity as an unlimited account.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Nobody is forcing you to pay.""

"Then stop requesting charges on my card.""

Her face reddened.

"You're acting like I'm some kind of thief.""

"I didn't use that word.""

Michael stepped between us.

"Can we please stop?""

Vanessa turned on him.

"Tell your mother she's being unreasonable.""

Michael looked at her.

"Vanessa, she didn't authorize those charges.""

"She paid for the whole vacation!""

"That doesn't mean we can spend eighteen thousand more.""

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time since I'd known her, she seemed genuinely surprised that he had disagreed with her.

Then she picked up her handbag.

"Fine. We'll pay for everything ourselves.""

She walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she turned back.

"And Carol? Don't expect us to spend every day thanking you. It's exhausting.""

The door closed.

Michael stood silently.

I looked at him.

"That's your marriage, Michael. You have to decide what you want it to look like.""

He nodded.

Then he left.

I spent the next hour reviewing my original bookings.

I contacted the resort's accounting department and requested written confirmation that no additional purchases could be charged to my card.

I also asked them to document that I had never authorized Vanessa to act on my behalf.

The manager was courteous.

"Mrs. Anderson, we'll place a note on the account. Only the registered cardholder can approve changes to your payment authorization.""

"Thank you.""

Afterward, I went downstairs for breakfast.

I chose a table facing the water and ordered coffee, fresh fruit, and eggs.

I had barely taken three bites when my phone vibrated.

It was a message from Vanessa.

*Vanessa:* I hope you're proud of yourself. You've managed to make our anniversary about money.

I stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

*Vanessa:* Michael is incredibly upset. You should think about what you're doing to your son.

I put the phone face down.

A few minutes later, the waiter brought another coffee.

"Would you like anything else, ma'am?""

"No, thank you. This is perfect.""

And it was.

Until I noticed Michael walking toward my table.

He looked different.

Not angry.

Not embarrassed.

Frightened.

He pulled out the chair opposite me and sat down.

"Mom, I found something in Vanessa's email.""

I put my coffee down.

"What did you find?""

He took out his phone.

Then he showed me a message dated two weeks before our departure.

The sender was Vanessa.

The recipient was someone named Daniel.

And the subject line read:

*The Cabo Payment Situation.*

May you like

Michael looked at me.

"Mom, I think Vanessa has been planning this for a lot longer than we realized.""
