Chapter 4: The Debt Hidden Behind Their Marriage
"Your mother isn't the only one.""
Bianca's words hung in the room.
Alexander stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She looked down at her phone, then toward the front door where her parents had been preparing to leave.
Ewald stopped moving.
"Bianca," he said sharply.
"Don't.""
That single word told me there was another secret.
And it was bigger than the money.
Alexander stepped between his wife and her father.
"No more whispering. No more private conversations. I want to know what is happening.""
Bianca shook her head.
"Not here.""
"Then where?""
"Alexander, please. You don't understand how serious this is.""
"You're right. I don't. Because apparently everyone in this room knows something except me.""
Ewald adjusted his jacket.
"This is a family matter. You should stay out of it.""
Alexander laughed without humor.
"You married your daughter into my family. You took €18,400 from my savings. You tried to arrange the sale of my mother's apartment. And now you want to tell me this isn't my business?""
Ewald's face reddened.
"Watch how you speak to me.""
"Give me one good reason to respect you.""
Lydia stepped forward.
"Alexander, your father-in-law made some unfortunate financial decisions. That's all.""
"How much?""
She looked away.
"How much?"" he repeated.
Ewald finally answered.
"Ninety-six thousand euros.""
Alexander stared at him.
"And you used my name?""
"It was temporary.""
"Did you use my name?""
Ewald rubbed his forehead.
"Bianca said you would help.""
Alexander turned toward his wife.
"Did you authorize a loan using my information?""
Bianca's eyes filled.
"I was trying to protect my father.""
"By putting me in debt?""
"Your father-in-law was facing serious difficulties!""
"That's not an answer.""
I watched Alexander's hands.
They were trembling again.
Not with anger alone.
With the realization that the people he had welcomed into his home had been making financial decisions behind his back.
I pulled out a chair.
"Sit down, Alexander.""
He looked at me.
"Mom, I can't sit down.""
"You need to. You're going to want to hear this properly.""
He hesitated, then sat.
I opened my folder and removed the notes Friedrich had given me.
"Last month, I asked him to investigate the company that received your money. He found several financial records connected to Ewald's business.""
Bianca interrupted.
"You had no right to investigate my father!""
I looked at her.
"I had every right to protect myself after discovering that someone was trying to sell my home.""
I handed Alexander a printed document.
It showed several transfers between accounts.
One of them was dated February 3.
Another was dated March 19.
A third was dated April 11.
All three involved a company registered under Ewald's name.
Alexander studied the page.
"These aren't my accounts.""
"No," I said.
"But Friedrich found your name in the supporting paperwork.""
Bianca stood abruptly.
"That's enough. You're turning a misunderstanding into a criminal investigation.""
I kept my voice calm.
"Then perhaps you can explain why the company has been receiving payments from your joint account.""
Alexander looked up.
"What?""
I pointed to the last page.
There were recurring transfers of €1,200.
The recipient was the same company.
He stared at Bianca.
"Where did that money come from?""
She didn't answer.
"Bianca?""
"From our household account.""
"Why?""
She pressed her fingers against her temples.
"Because Dad needed help.""
Alexander leaned back.
"How long?""
"Just a few months.""
"How long?""
She swallowed.
"Almost two years.""
He closed his eyes.
I could almost hear the calculations happening in his head.
Two years of transfers.
Mortgage payments.
Household expenses.
Money he believed was being saved for their future.
And now the €25,000 he had worked so hard to give me had become another argument.
I reached for his hand.
"Don't try to solve everything today.""
He nodded faintly.
But Ewald had other plans.
He stepped toward the table and pointed at me.
"This woman has been collecting information about us for months. She is deliberately trying to turn you against your wife.""
I looked at him.
"Ewald, I spent forty years cleaning offices. I know the difference between dirt and something that is deliberately hidden beneath it.""
He scoffed.
"Don't pretend you're some financial expert.""
"I never did.""
"Then stop interfering.""
I smiled.
"Funny. That's exactly what Bianca used to tell me whenever I asked where my money had gone.""
He looked away.
My phone vibrated again.
Friedrich had sent another message.
Please don't sign anything. I have contacted the bank's fraud department regarding the documents you sent me. There is an additional issue involving an outstanding guarantee.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Alexander.
"There's something else we need to check.""
Bianca suddenly reached for my phone.
I pulled it away.
"What is wrong with you?"" she snapped.
"Nothing. I'm simply learning to protect what belongs to me.""
Alexander stood.
"Bianca, give me your phone.""
She frowned.
"Why?""
"Because I want to see the messages from your father about the loan.""
"Absolutely not.""
"Then we're done talking.""
She looked at him.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then her phone rang again.
This time she answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice came through loudly enough for everyone to hear.
"Mrs. Weber? This is Mr.
Keller from the bank. We need to discuss the documents submitted under your husband's name.""
Bianca's face went white.
"Not now.""
"Madam, we have reason to believe the authorization may have been obtained under misleading circumstances. We require your husband's confirmation.""
Alexander slowly reached for the phone.
"Who is this?""
The man repeated his name.
Then he said something that made Alexander grip the edge of the table.
"Sir, we have a signed guarantee connected to a €96,000 loan. If you did not authorize it, you should not acknowledge the debt or make any payment until our investigation is complete.""
Alexander looked at Bianca.
She lowered her eyes.
He ended the call.
Nobody spoke.
Then he asked quietly:
"How long have you been using my name?""
Bianca began crying.
And for the first time, I wondered whether the marriage my son had fought so hard to protect had been built on a foundation he had never actually seen.
But before Bianca could answer, Ewald stepped toward the door.
He had heard enough.
And he was carrying something in his jacket that he clearly didn't want us to discover.
I noticed the corner of a folded document sticking out of his pocket.
It had my name printed across the top.

And beneath it, in bold letters, were the words:
*POWER OF ATTORNEY.*
