Chapter 18: The Price of Protecting My Son

We reached the airport just as Martin Keller was approaching the security checkpoint.

Two officers stopped him.

He looked irritated at first.

Then he saw Inspector Brandt.

His expression changed.

"What's this about?""

"We need you to accompany us for questioning.""

Martin glanced at his suitcase.

"I have a flight.""

"Not anymore.""

He looked toward Alexander.

Then toward me.

For a moment, I saw something like regret in his eyes.

But it disappeared quickly.

"This is a misunderstanding," he said.

Alexander stepped forward.

"You used my name on a guarantee.""

Martin said nothing.

"You took money from my father's company.""

Still nothing.

"You told my mother you were helping us while you were trying to destroy the foundation.""

Martin looked at me.

"Helga, you don't understand what happened.""

"Then explain it.""

He glanced at the officers.

"Not here.""

Inspector Brandt agreed to question him at the station.

Before leaving, Martin turned toward Alexander.

"Your father made sacrifices you know nothing about.""

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Then tell me.""

Martin lowered his voice.

"He paid €42,000 to remove your name from a guarantee agreement.""

I felt my breath catch.

"Paid whom?""

Martin looked at me.

"Markus Vogel.""

Alexander stared.

"Why?""

"Because your name had already been used in the original company financing. Vogel had arranged the paperwork. When Karl discovered it, he demanded that your name be removed.""

"Did I ever owe that money?""

Martin hesitated.

"Not legally, if the agreement was successfully challenged.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Martin looked away.

"Your signature was on the document.""

Alexander shook his head.

"I never signed it.""

"I know.""

The answer came too quickly.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Then why did you let it happen?""

Martin looked exhausted.

"Because Ewald had threatened to expose the financial arrangements, and I believed we could resolve everything privately.""

"You used my identity to protect yourselves.""

Martin said nothing.

I looked at him.

"Did Karl know you were responsible?""

Martin nodded.

"He found out.""

"And he paid Vogel?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't he report you?""

Martin looked at me.

"Because Vogel threatened to make the guarantee look legitimate. He said your son could be prosecuted for fraud if the documents were presented without the original records.""

Alexander looked devastated.

"My father paid to protect me.""

I reached for his hand.

"Your father would have done anything to keep you safe.""

Martin lowered his eyes.

"He also made me promise to stay away from your family.""

I stared at him.

"And you broke that promise.""

"Yes.""

The officers escorted him away.

At the station, Martin was questioned for several hours.

He eventually admitted that he had authorized payments to Northbridge Consulting and that he had known about the false guarantee.

He denied creating the fraudulent property documents.

He blamed Ewald and Vogel.

He also claimed Bianca had approached him independently, offering to help recover the missing money through the sale of my apartment.

Alexander listened without speaking.

Then he asked one question.

"Did you know Bianca planned to divorce me?""

Martin looked up.

"Yes.""

"Did you know she intended to leave me responsible for the loans?""

Martin hesitated.

"Yes.""

Alexander's face hardened.

"Then you knew what she was doing to me.""

Martin nodded.

"I did.""

That was enough.

Alexander stood and walked out.

I followed him into the corridor.

He leaned against the wall.

For a moment, he looked like a little boy who had just discovered that the world was not as safe as he believed.

"Mom, Dad knew all of this.""

"Some of it.""

"He paid €42,000 because someone used my name. He spent years protecting me. And I spent the last few years barely visiting him because Bianca kept telling me he was controlling.""

His voice cracked.

I took his face in my hands.

"Your father never stopped loving you.""

Alexander closed his eyes.

"I should have listened.""

I held him.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Then Anna approached with her phone.

"We've received an update from the trust administrator.""

I stepped back.

"What happened?""

"The trust has not been frozen completely. Only the disputed distribution requests have been suspended. Your principal investment remains protected.""

I exhaled.

"Thank goodness.""

"But there is another development.""

Anna showed us a document.

The trust administrator had received a request to remove Martin Keller as protector.

The request had been submitted two days earlier.

By whom?

Bianca Weber.

Alexander shook his head.

"She can't keep doing this.""

Anna continued.

"The request included a statement claiming that Martin was no longer capable of fulfilling his duties and that his replacement should be Markus Vogel.""

I stared.

"They wanted Vogel to control the trust.""

"Yes.""

"Can that happen?""

"Not through this request. The trust requires approval from an independent panel.""

Alexander looked at the document.

"Who signed the supporting declaration?""

Anna enlarged the page.

A name appeared.

Sophie Brandt.

I felt my heart stop.

"The woman who disappeared?""

Anna nodded.

"The declaration claims she witnessed Martin transferring control of certain trust records to Vogel.""

Alexander frowned.

"But Sophie told us Vogel took the records.""

"Exactly.""

The declaration was dated the previous day.

I stared at the signature.

It looked genuine.

But the wording was strange.

Sophie had spoken to us on the phone. She had said she had copies of the records and that someone was following her.

Could she have been forced to sign?

Or was she involved all along?

Inspector Brandt returned.

He had heard the update.

"We're investigating Sophie's disappearance. But I need to show you something.""

He placed a printed email on the table.

It had been recovered from Markus Vogel's office server.

The sender was Bianca.

The subject line read:

*The Final Arrangement.*

The message said:

Once Martin is removed and the trust records are transferred, we can close the foundation. Helga will be too busy defending herself to interfere.

Then came another sentence.

Alexander still believes he can save his mother. Make sure he understands that the original guarantee can still be used against him.

I looked at my son.

He was reading the message.

His face had become expressionless.

But the last paragraph was even worse.

After the divorce, I want the apartment proceeds and the remaining trust assets placed in the same holding structure. Ewald can handle the creditors. Markus will handle the legal side.

Alexander lowered the paper.

"She planned to take everything.""

Anna nodded.

"That's what the email suggests.""

Then Inspector Brandt placed another document on the table.

It was a draft divorce petition.

Bianca had already prepared it.

The stated reason was that Alexander had concealed substantial debts and entered into fraudulent financial arrangements without informing his wife.

I felt sick.

The same lies they had used to threaten him were now being prepared as the foundation of a divorce.

Alexander read the document slowly.

Then he reached the final page.

There was a section listing the property and assets Bianca intended to claim.

His salary.

His savings.

His share of the house.

And a financial guarantee supposedly signed by him.

But beneath the list was a handwritten note.

It was in Bianca's handwriting.

If he refuses, tell him what happened to his father.

Alexander looked up.

"What does that mean?""

I stared at the sentence.

Before anyone could answer, Inspector Brandt's phone rang.

He listened.

Then he looked at us.

"We've found Sophie Brandt.""

"Where?"" I asked.

"At a private clinic outside the city.""

"Is she alive?""

"Yes.""

I felt relief flood through me.

Then the inspector added:

"But she has given a statement claiming that Karl Morgen knowingly participated in the original financial transfers.""

Alexander went completely still.

I gripped the edge of the table.

"That's impossible.""

Inspector Brandt looked at me.

"She also claims your husband received a payment of €42,000 and agreed to keep the records hidden.""

Alexander shook his head.

"No. Dad paid that money to protect me.""

The inspector closed the folder.

"Then we need to establish why Sophie is saying otherwise.""

I looked at the photograph of Karl.

For six years, I had protected his final secrets.

May you like

Now someone was using those secrets to destroy his name.

And I knew that if we didn't find the truth before the final hearing, Bianca and Ewald might succeed in making the world believe that the man who had spent his life protecting his family was the very man who had betrayed everyone.
