Chapter 12: The Funeral Was a Lie

Thomas entered the diner and placed the photograph on the table.

Daniel stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the man who was supposed to be dead.""

I picked up the photograph.

It showed Dad standing outside a pharmacy.

He looked older, thinner, but unmistakably himself.

The newspaper in his hand was dated October 27, 2026.

The day before his funeral.

I shook my head.

"That's not possible.""

Thomas pulled out a chair.

"Robert is alive.""

I stared at him.

"Then whose funeral did we attend?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Elizabeth looked down.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Mom, you knew?""

She nodded.

"I suspected.""

I turned toward Thomas.

"Tell me everything.""

He took a deep breath.

"The man you buried was Robert's younger brother, Michael.""

I felt sick.

"Uncle Michael?""

Thomas nodded.

"Your father arranged for the identity to be switched before the funeral.""

I remembered the closed casket.

The funeral director's explanation.

The medical paperwork I'd signed.

I'd never seen my father's body.

I'd assumed it was because the hospital had recommended a closed-casket service.

Now I understood.

"Why would Dad do that?""

Thomas looked at Elizabeth.

"Because someone was trying to kill him.""

I shook my head.

"He was dying. He had heart disease.""

"That was true," Elizabeth said.

"But the final attack wasn't natural.""

Daniel stared.

"What attack?""

Thomas placed another document on the table.

It was a medical report.

The cause of death listed on the certificate was cardiac arrest.

But a second page contained an unusual finding.

A substance had been detected in his blood.

I looked at the report.

"What is this?""

"An experimental medication," Thomas explained.

"It was designed to interfere with cardiac rhythm.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"You're saying Dad was poisoned?""

Thomas nodded.

"Someone wanted him dead before he could release the recording.""

Elizabeth wiped her eyes.

"Robert knew he was being watched. He asked Michael to help him create a final deception.""

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"Why would Uncle Michael agree to die in his place?""

"He didn't agree," Thomas said.

The words fell like a stone.

I looked up.

"What?""

Thomas's jaw tightened.

"Michael didn't know the full plan. He believed he was helping Robert escape a dangerous situation. He was told to stay in a private medical facility under another name.""

"Then how did he die?""

Thomas looked at Elizabeth.

She spoke quietly.

"Someone found him first.""

I covered my mouth.

"So Uncle Michael was murdered?""

Thomas nodded.

"And Robert used the confusion to disappear.""

I felt a terrible anger rising.

"My father let us bury his brother while pretending to be dead?""

"Yes.""

"And he watched me cry at his funeral?""

Thomas looked away.

"From a distance.""

I stood so abruptly that my chair fell backward.

"That's sick.""

Elizabeth began crying.

"Sarah, he believed it was the only way.""

"Stop saying that!""

I looked at all three of them.

"You've spent my entire life making decisions in the name of protection. My mother disappeared. My father faked his death.

My husband lied about how we met. My daughter was given another identity. And now my uncle is dead because of a plan none of us were allowed to understand.""

Nobody spoke.

I took my coat.

"I'm leaving.""

Daniel followed me outside.

"Sarah, wait.""

I turned.

"Don't.""

"I need to tell you something.""

"You've had fourteen years.""

He stepped closer.

"When I met you, I didn't know Robert was planning to fake his death. I didn't know Michael would die.""

"But you knew about the documents.""

"Yes.""

"You knew about the recording.""

"Yes.""

"And you knew my identity was false.""

He nodded.

I looked at him.

"Was there anything about me you didn't investigate?""

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I fell in love with you.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't erase what you did.""

"I know.""

"Then leave me alone.""

I walked toward Eric's car.

But before I reached it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Sarah.""

I froze.

It was my father's voice.

"Is that you, Dad?""

A quiet sigh.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

I pressed the phone against my ear.

"Where are you?""

"Somewhere I can finally speak freely.""

I started crying.

"You're alive.""

"Yes.""

"Why did you let us bury Michael?""

There was a long silence.

Then Dad answered.

"Because I had no choice.""

"You always had a choice.""

"I know.""

"Do you understand what you've done to us?""

"I do.""

"Then why?""

His voice broke.

"Because I was trying to keep you alive.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who poisoned you?""

Another pause.

"Someone close to the family.""

I looked back toward the diner.

Thomas was standing in the doorway.

Daniel had gone pale.

Elizabeth was crying.

"Who?"" I demanded.

Dad spoke quietly.

"Your uncle wasn't the only person who died because of me.""

"What are you talking about?""

"Sarah, listen carefully. The person who arranged the poison has access to every document Martin Lawson ever prepared.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

Dad hesitated.

Then he said:

"Martin Lawson.""

I stared at the attorney's name on my phone.

"That's impossible. Mr. Lawson has been helping us.""

"He's been helping himself.""

I looked toward the diner.

Mr. Lawson wasn't there.

"Where is he?""

Dad's voice became urgent.

"Get away from Thomas. Get away from Daniel. And whatever you do, don't let Martin open the envelope he took from my study.""

I looked at Eric's car.

"Which envelope?""

"The one containing the original recording.""

I felt my blood run cold.

"Eric has the recording.""

"No, sweetheart.""

Dad's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Eric has the copy.""

I stared through the diner window.

Thomas was speaking to Elizabeth.

Daniel was looking at his phone.

And suddenly I noticed something missing.

Mr. Lawson's briefcase.

It was no longer beside the table.

"Dad, where is the original?""

My father answered with six words.

"Inside the red suit, Sarah.""

I stopped breathing.

"The red suit Eric wore?""

"Yes.""

"But Mr. Lawson already searched it.""

"I know.""

"Then how—"

"Because I put the real recording in the sleeve.""

I looked toward the parking lot.

Eric's car was still there.

But Eric wasn't.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my brother.

Sarah, don't trust Lawson. He's taken Emily.

A second message arrived immediately afterward.

And he's heading to the house where Dad is hiding.

May you like

Then my father spoke again.

"Sarah, if Martin gets there before you do, none of us will make it through tonight.""
