Chapter 11: The Wrong Child
Elizabeth refused to explain everything over the phone.
She agreed to meet us the following morning at a small diner outside Columbus.
Daniel insisted on coming.
I almost refused.
But I needed answers, and apparently every answer in this family came with another secret.
Emily stayed with Eric.
Before we left, I pulled my brother aside.
"Don't let her out of your sight.""
Eric nodded.
"I won't.""
"And if anyone comes looking for her?""
"Call the police.""
He squeezed my shoulder.
"Sarah, we'll figure this out.""
I wanted to believe him.
The next morning, Daniel and I arrived at the diner just before nine.
Elizabeth was sitting in the back booth.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph, but unmistakably alive.
Her silver hair was tied back, and she wore a navy coat.
When she saw Daniel, she stood.
He stopped several feet away.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then she whispered:
"My boy.""
Daniel's face crumpled.
He crossed the room and embraced her.
I watched them.
I couldn't help thinking about how many years he'd spent grieving a woman who was apparently alive.
When they finally separated, Elizabeth turned toward me.
"Sarah.""
I nodded.
"Mrs. Mitchell.""
She winced.
"Please. Call me Elizabeth.""
I sat down.
"Let's get this over with.""
She accepted the bluntness.
"Your father and I met in 1998," she began.
"He was already involved in the military investigation. Thomas was helping him recover documents from an operation that had been covered up.""
"Why?""
"Because innocent people had been blamed for something they didn't do.""
She looked at Daniel.
"Your father was supposed to testify.""
Daniel frowned.
"Robert?""
Elizabeth nodded.
"He had evidence that could clear Thomas. But someone threatened his family.""
I thought of my mother.
"And that's why Mom disappeared?""
"Partly.""
Elizabeth took a sip of coffee.
"Your mother was pregnant in 2001. She was carrying a child connected to Thomas. The investigation had become dangerous, so she asked Robert to arrange a private adoption.""
I interrupted.
"But Emily wasn't born until 2008.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"That's because the 2001 child was not Emily.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then who was that child?""
Elizabeth looked directly at me.
"Me.""
I stared.
"What?""
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Margaret holding a baby.
The baby had a small crescent-shaped birthmark on its wrist.
The same mark I'd seen on Emily.
But the date was 2001.
"Margaret was not your biological mother," Elizabeth said.
"She was your guardian.""
I shook my head.
"You're telling me my entire childhood was built on a lie?""
"Yes.""
"Who was my biological mother?""
Elizabeth looked down.
"Me.""
I stopped breathing.
Daniel stared at his mother.
"Mom, what are you saying?""
Elizabeth reached across the table.
"Sarah, you were born in 2001. Your father was Thomas Reed.""
I pulled my hand away.
"No.""
"I know it's difficult.""
"No. My father was Robert Mitchell.""
"Robert raised you.""
"He was my father.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"He loved you like his own.""
I stood.
"Then why did nobody tell me?""
"Because the military investigation wasn't about the recording anymore. It was about the people who wanted the child.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you know?""
He shook his head.
"I didn't.""
Elizabeth continued.
"Robert and Margaret decided to raise you as their daughter. They believed changing your identity would protect you.""
I felt dizzy.
"Then who was Emily?""
Elizabeth looked at Daniel.
"Emily was Margaret and Robert's biological daughter.""
Daniel leaned back.
"But the records said—"
"The records were switched.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"Your father altered the documents to make it appear that Emily was the child connected to Thomas. That way, investigators would search for the wrong person.""
I looked at her.
"So Emily was never the child they wanted?""
"Correct.""
"Then why did Thomas keep searching for her?""
Elizabeth's expression changed.
"Because he didn't know the records had been switched.""
I stared at the table.
Everything we'd believed was backwards.
My mother had raised me.
My father had loved me.
But neither was biologically related to me.
And the daughter I'd given birth to was actually my sister.
I pressed my fingers against my temples.
"Where does the other baby fit into this?""
Elizabeth became very still.
"That is the part Robert never wanted anyone to discover.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a folded medical record.
It was from a hospital in Pennsylvania.
The patient's name was Elizabeth Mitchell.
The date was November 18, 2008.
I stared.
"That's the date Emily was born.""
Elizabeth nodded.
"I gave birth that day.""
Daniel looked horrified.
"Mom?""
She continued.
"Margaret had been helping me for months. She knew I couldn't raise another child safely. The baby was supposed to be adopted by a family in Tennessee.""
I looked at her.
"Who?""
"The Collins family.""
The same family name we'd seen on the records.
"Then who raised Emily?""
Elizabeth shook her head.
"Emily was never the baby I gave birth to.""
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
"Then where is your child?""
Elizabeth looked at me.
"That's what Thomas has been searching for.""
I leaned forward.
"Who is Thomas's biological daughter?""
She slid another document toward me.
It contained a name.
*LILY COLLINS.*
Below it was a date of birth.
November 18, 2008.
And beneath that, a handwritten note:
Transferred to the Mitchell family under the identity of Emily Mitchell.
I stared at the document.
"You're saying Emily is actually Lily Collins?""
Elizabeth nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then where is the real Emily?""
Elizabeth's eyes filled.
"She's been living under another name.""
I felt my heart pound.
"Where?""
Elizabeth looked at Daniel.
"Your father knows.""
Daniel shook his head.
"My father died.""
Elizabeth leaned closer.
"Your father didn't die, Daniel.""
The diner seemed to go silent.
"What?""
"Robert Mitchell is alive.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible. We buried him yesterday.""
Elizabeth shook her head.
"The man in that coffin was not Robert.""
My hands began shaking.
"Then whose body did we bury?""
She looked toward the window.
"Thomas knows.""
I turned.
Outside, a black sedan had just pulled into the parking lot.
Thomas Reed stepped out.
He walked toward the entrance.
May you like
And in his hand was a photograph of a man who looked exactly like my father.
Except the man in the picture was standing beside a newspaper dated October 2026.
