Chapter 9: Margaret’s Final Weapon
The next morning, Margaret sent me a message.
One sentence.
That was all.
“Come alone if you want the truth.””
I stared at the screen for several minutes.
Daniel was standing beside me.
“Don’t go.””
I looked at him.
“You know I have to.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“She wants you alone.””
“Yes.””
“Because she thinks she can control you.””
I nodded.
“Exactly.””
Daniel frowned.
“Emma.””
“I need to know what she has.””
He looked worried.
“What if it’s a trap?””
I smiled slightly.
“It probably is.””
That didn’t make him feel better.
But I wasn’t the same person who had walked into Margaret’s house five years ago hoping for approval.
I wasn’t going there to convince her to like me.
I was going there because I needed answers.
Margaret opened the door before I knocked.
She was waiting.
Of course she was.
Her house was perfectly clean.
Everything arranged.
Everything controlled.
Just like her.
“Come in.””
I stepped inside.
She closed the door behind me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she smiled.
“You look different.””
I didn’t respond.
“You finally grew a backbone.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I paused.
“I finally stopped letting you break it.””
Her expression tightened.
She motioned toward the living room.
“I suppose you think you’ve won.””
I sat down.
“I don’t think anything.””
That seemed to bother her.
Because Margaret needed people to react.
She needed emotional control.
But I wasn’t giving it to her.
“You always were more difficult than I expected.””
I almost laughed.
“More difficult?””
“Yes.””
She sat across from me.
“You never understood your place.””
There it was.
The truth.
Finally.
“My place?””
“As Daniel’s wife.””
I waited.
She continued.
“You should have supported him.””
“I did.””
“You should have followed my advice.””
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“That is your problem.””
I shook my head.
“No, Margaret. Your problem is that you believe everyone exists to follow your instructions.””
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she reached into a drawer.
And pulled out a folder.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized it.
The same type of folder Daniel found.
“You want to know what’s inside?””
I looked at it.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
“Then I’ll show you.””
She opened it slowly.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
And something else.
Something I didn’t expect.
A letter.
My name was written on the front.
I looked at Margaret.
“What is this?””
She leaned back.
“The truth.””
I picked it up.
But before I opened it, she spoke.
“You think Daniel is innocent.””
I looked at her.
“He is responsible for his choices.””
She smiled.
“You still don’t know everything.””
My fingers tightened around the letter.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret’s smile returned.
The confident one.
The dangerous one.
“The man you married has secrets too.””
I felt my heart sink.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She leaned forward.
“And when you read that letter, you’ll understand why I never believed your marriage would last.””
I stared at the envelope.
Because suddenly, I was afraid.
Not of Margaret.
Not anymore.
I was afraid of what the letter would reveal.
Because if Daniel had hidden something from me…
Then the entire foundation of our marriage might have been built on another secret.
And Margaret knew exactly what was inside.
She had been waiting years for this moment.
A moment when I would finally question the one person I thought was on my side.
I slowly opened the envelope.
May you like
And the first line made my entire world stop.
*“Emma, if you are reading this, it means Margaret succeeded in hiding the truth from you.””*
