Chapter 12: The Secret Margaret Used as Her Last Defense

Daniel didn’t say anything.

That scared me.

Anger would have been easier.

Confusion would have been easier.

Silence was worse.

Because silence meant something had shaken him.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He looked at the document.

Then at me.

Then back at the document.

“Emma…”

My heart tightened.

“Read it.””

He hesitated.

Margaret watched us carefully.

Waiting.

Always waiting.

Daniel handed me the paper.

I looked down.

The first line made my breath stop.

It was about my family.

My past.

A part of my life I rarely discussed.

But Margaret had found it.

Of course she had.

She had investigated me before I even met her.

The document contained information about my father’s old business.

A failed company.

A lawsuit.

Financial problems.

Things I had never hidden from Daniel.

But things I had never discussed in detail.

I looked at Margaret.

“This is what you came here for?””

She smiled.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I held the paper.

“I understand perfectly.””

Her smile faded.

“You never told Daniel everything.””

I looked at my husband.

“That’s not true.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I knew about my father’s business.””

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“But did you know everything?””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t answer.

Because maybe there were details he didn’t know.

But that wasn’t the same as betrayal.

Margaret stepped closer.

“This is why I investigated you.””

I stared.

“No.””

She continued.

“I knew there was something wrong.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted something wrong.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the truth.

Margaret didn’t search for facts.

She searched for weapons.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You investigated my wife?””

She didn’t answer.

“Before we even married?””

Still nothing.

“Mom.””

Finally, she spoke.

“I was protecting you.””

Daniel laughed once.

A sad laugh.

“Everything you do is always called protection.””

Margaret looked hurt.

Because maybe she was finally hearing how empty that excuse sounded.

Daniel turned to me.

“Did you know about this lawsuit?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

I answered honestly.

“Because it happened before we met. My father handled it. It wasn’t part of my life anymore.””

He nodded.

That made sense.

Then he looked at Margaret.

“And you thought this proved what?””

Margaret didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“That she wasn’t perfect.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the manipulation.

Her final argument was that I wasn’t perfect.

Daniel stared at her.

“Mom.””

“What?””

“Everyone has a past.””

Her expression changed.

“But not everyone hides it.””

I stepped forward.

“Margaret.””

She looked at me.

“I never claimed to be perfect.””

I placed the document down.

“I claimed to deserve respect.””

That was the difference.

And she finally understood.

Her last weapon had failed.

Because it wasn’t a weapon.

It was just proof that I was human.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“I did all of this because I love you.””

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he said:

“I believe you love me.””

Her face softened.

“But I don’t believe you know how to love me without controlling me.””

That sentence destroyed her.

Because it was the one thing she could never argue against.

She left shortly afterward.

No dramatic speech.

No final insult.

Just silence.

And somehow, that was more powerful.

After she left, Daniel and I sat together.

The house was quiet.

Different.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“I don’t want to lose you.””

I looked down.

“Then don’t make me fight alone anymore.””

He nodded.

“I won’t.””

For the first time in a long time, I believed him.

But just as we thought the worst was behind us, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?””

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

I couldn’t hear everything.

Only Daniel’s side.

“Wait… what?””

A pause.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Another pause.

Then his face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

My heart started racing.

He ended the call slowly.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

“It was Rachel.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She found something.””

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“She said Margaret wasn’t the only person hiding secrets.””

I felt cold.

“Daniel…”

He looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

“Rachel found proof that the accident years ago wasn’t exactly what I thought.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, the past we thought we understood…

May you like

Was changing.

And somewhere inside that past was a truth Margaret had never expected anyone to uncover.
