Chapter 9: The Secret My Father-in-Law Left Behind
Margaret enjoyed the silence.
That was the most dangerous thing about her.
She loved the moment before revealing something.
The moment when everyone was waiting.
The moment when she felt powerful.
For years, she had controlled rooms exactly like this.
She knew how to create fear.
How to create doubt.
How to make people question the person standing beside them.
But this time, something was different.
Nobody interrupted me.
Nobody immediately believed her.
They waited.
And that bothered her.
“What was she hiding?”” Daniel asked.
Margaret looked at me.
“She knows.””
I remained calm.
“Then tell them.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You’re not scared?””
“No.””
That surprised her.
Because she remembered the old me.
The woman who would apologize.
The woman who would panic.
The woman who would spend hours trying to prove she was a good person.
But that woman was gone.
Margaret opened the folder again.
“Your father gave Emily that envelope because he trusted her.””
“Yes,” Daniel said.
“But why?””
Margaret looked at him.
“Because they had secrets together.””
The accusation was clear.
The room changed.
A few people looked uncomfortable.
Daniel looked at me.
Not angry.
Confused.
And that hurt.
Because after everything, a small piece of doubt still existed.
I walked toward the table.
“Daniel, look at me.””
He did.
“Your father was like family to me.””
“I know.””
“He respected me because I listened to him.””
Margaret interrupted.
“Because you were always around him.””
I turned toward her.
“Because you stopped visiting him.””
Silence.
The words landed.
Margaret froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
I continued.
“Your father spent his last months feeling alone.””
Margaret shook her head.
“That’s a lie.””
“No.””
I looked at everyone.
“It’s the truth you don’t want anyone to hear.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he remembered.
The hospital visits.
The excuses.
The times Margaret said his father was resting.
“He asked me to visit because he knew I would listen.””
Daniel whispered.
“My dad was lonely?””
I nodded.
“He was scared.””
Margaret looked away.
And that was when Rachel noticed something.
“Mom.””
Everyone turned.
Rachel pointed at the folder.
“Where did you get these documents?””
Margaret looked confused.
“What?””
“These papers.””
Rachel stood.
“You didn’t have these before.””
The room became silent.
Because Rachel had noticed something important.
Margaret wasn’t just exposing old information.
She had been preparing.
“You went through her things,” Rachel said.
Margaret’s face changed.
“No.””
But the hesitation was enough.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Did you?””
Margaret looked away.
And suddenly everyone understood.
She hadn’t discovered anything.
She had searched.
She had hunted for something.
Anything.
A weakness.
A mistake.
A reason to destroy me.
Because she knew the truth was coming.
And she needed a weapon.
Daniel looked disgusted.
“You went through my wife’s private information?””
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You were investigating her.””
Margaret stood.
“I am your mother.””
“And she is my wife.””
The room became silent.
That sentence changed everything.
Because for the first time, Daniel wasn’t caught between us.
He had chosen.
Margaret looked at him like she had never seen him before.
“You would choose her over me?””
Daniel sighed.
“I’m choosing honesty.””
I watched Margaret carefully.
Because I knew.
This wasn’t the end.
It was the moment she realized she had lost control.
And people who lose control often do desperate things.
She picked up her purse.
“You all think you know the truth.””
She looked at me.
“But there’s one thing nobody knows.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Margaret smiled.
A cold, confident smile.
“The reason your father gave you that envelope.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
Margaret walked toward the door.
“He didn’t trust you because you were innocent.””
She paused.
“He trusted you because you were involved.””
The words echoed through the room.
Then she left.
And for the first time that night…
I felt afraid.
Because Margaret had just revealed something I had never told Daniel.
Something even he didn’t know.
Something hidden inside the letter.
Something his father had begged me to keep secret.
May you like
And now…
Margaret had found a way to use it against me.
